Ben Afflecks latest directorial effort "Argo" trailer

Love this guy as a director! Ive never heard of this story, but the movie looks great.

During the 1979 Iran hostage crisis, the governments of the United States and Canada partnered to rescue six U.S. diplomats held hostage at their embassy in Iran. The governments were able to convince Iran that the six hostages were members of a camera crew who were scouting the area for a Sci-Fi film titled Argo. The hostages were able to escape the country with their fake identities

Heh, I just posted this in the movie thread. Did you see it on G4 too?

It does look really good.

BigMeatballDave 05-09-2012 04:31 AM

Looks good.

JD10367 05-09-2012 08:18 AM

Interesting. I was wondering what it was about, because on Tuesday we get our trailer report of which trailers are going on which films, and for "Dark Shadows" one of them is "Argo", and I thought, "I wonder what the hell that's about? I hope it's a 'Starblazers' movie!" :)

Deberg_1990 08-31-2012 07:22 PM

Cant wait for this......sounds great!

Ben Affleck's period drama, set during the 1979 and '80 Iran hostage crisis and based on fact, is a partly light-hearted, partly riveting drama about a kind of Mission Impossible scam about smuggling six American foreign-service workers who had taken shelter in Tehran's Canadian embassy after the storming of the U.S. embassy and the taking of hostages.

An enterprising CIA guy named Tony Mendez (Affleck) devises a plan to hoodwink Iranian officials into believing these six are filmmakers looking to use Iranian locations for a cheesy-sounding sci-fi film called Argo that is, of course, fake.

Argo starts out as a somber docu-drama, and then shifts into a kind of flip jocular vein (especially with the appearance of John Goodman and Alan Arkin as a couple of exploitation producers who assist Afleck in creating the backstory for the phony film), and then somber again and then sad and then revved again and then really, really tense.

In short, it's smart and absorbing for first two-thirds to three-quarters, but it's the suspenseful final act that brings it home.

Argo delivers superb period detail all the way through -- technology, cars, clothes, haircuts, everything.

Affleck's direction is clean and concise and doesn't waste time or footage. The screenplay by Chris Terrio is aces. And the cast hits nothing but true notes -- Affleck as Mendez, Bryan Cranston as his CIA boss, Arkin and Goodman as the producers, Victor Garber as Iran's Canadian ambassador who protected the six when they were hiding in his residence, and Kyle Chandler as the late Hamilton Jordan, Jimmy Carter's chief of staff.

Bump. This opens tomorrow and is getting near universal praise. It will probably bomb, but I plan on supporting it. We don't get too many well made adult thrill movies.

I'm smack dab in the middle of the book

I hear he is going to direct a two part movie based on The Stand by Stephen King.
Done right, it could be pretty awesome. The miniseries wasn't bad but it's a little dated.
The cast wasnt great either, (except for Lt. Dan).

Oh and they're also working on redoing IT as well. I guess it's going to be a 2 parter as well. The only good part about that miniseries was Pennywise.

It only cost $50 million so a bomb is unlikely.

Affleck gained a a ton of fans and respect after "The Town"' so I'm expecting it to do well.

Definitely seeing it this weekend. Maybe Seven Psychopaths, too, not sure.

CoMoChief 10-12-2012 10:37 AM

Looks good.....though I don't like Affleck one bit. Wish his character was replaced w/ someone elses.

jwazzie 10-12-2012 10:50 AM

Another movie that he directed and was great was "Gone, Baby, Gone" with his brother as the lead. He has the chops to be very successful as a director, which would be great since his wife's movies are bombing left and right. Look up "Butter" and see how it did last weekend.

DJ's left nut 10-12-2012 10:51 AM

By most accounts, Affleck is a very good director and a very shitty actor.

I hope he didn't ruin his own movie by putting himself in it.

Fire Me Boy! 10-12-2012 11:08 AM

The wife and I will probably go see this tonight.

And I have to disagree with DJ's left nut. Affleck is pretty good, but he's a supporting actor, not a lead. Kinda like Kevin Bacon.

He was great at both in "The Town".

Have you seen it? If not, I highly recommend it.

This. Hes never been the worlds greatest actor, but hes solid enough in the right role.

His acting is fine. He got a bad rap from Gigli, which was horrible on all accounts. Al Pacino was far worse than Affleck.

With a few more strong releases, the notion that Affleck "can't act" will be long forgotten.

Gigli....hahah

Kudos to Affleck for being able to successfully move on from the hearthrob/Tabloid/JLo phase of his career.

He's a very good actor in the right roles. His bad rap as an actor had more to do with "sum of all fears", "daredevil", and as you pointed out "gigli" back to back to back. He doesn't need to do lame action movies like Shia Laboof.

KCUnited 10-12-2012 11:47 AM

Ben Affleck as Antonio Mendez, lol. I like the premise though and will no doubt see it.

journeyscarab 10-12-2012 11:58 AM

He looks like he could play David Ghrol.

He was awesome in The Town.

KcMizzou 10-13-2012 12:08 AM

I wonder what happened between him and Kevin Smith. I listen to Smith a lot (he talks a lot) They used to be buddies.. Smith would joke about how Affleck was gonna be a "star" and leave the rest of them behind. But something changed and it's like the one thing KS won't talk about now.

RealSNR 10-13-2012 01:05 AM

I just saw this. Pretty good movie. John Goodman (RIP) and Alan Alda were ****ing hilarious.

I kind of forgot how everybody in the late 70s/early 80s was butt **** ugly.

Hmmm. I had no idea thy had a falling out? What was the last thing they did together? Jersey Girl? That was during the previously mentioned tabloid/Jlo phase.

This. One of my top ten. It is one of those that I just HAVE to watch every time it is on.

jiveturkey 10-13-2012 08:10 PM

Argo **** yourself.

Loved it.

keg in kc 11-02-2012 01:11 AM

Saw it this afternoon. Liked it more than Cloud Atlas but not quite as much as Looper. All in all, though, quite a good one.

Its become a suprise sleeper hit. I have faith in the American movie going public again.

Dude, it's not a surprise, nor was it a "sleeper".

It was released late in the year because they want it fresh in the voter's mind for Oscar season.

Perhaps, but you have to admit its a harder sell than a Transformers 3, Die Hard 5 or Paranormal activity 15. Different target audience...but still.

I didn't cost in excess of $100 million to make. And it was released during Awards Season because it's not a summer blockbuster type of movie.

I went into the movie expecting just this. However, after enjoying the movie thoroughly, I now think that maybe the only person in Hollywood that knows how to direct Ben Affleck is Ben Affleck. I had no respect for him at all as an actor until I saw this film. However, in this film, he did a fine job. Nothing that should single him out for acting award honors, but he didn't ruin it and that surprised the hell out of me.
