How is Spartacus S3?

Or is it season 2? Didn't know if the prequel season was technically season 2. Anyway, my brother begged me to watch this show with him when season 1 was going. I watched the first episode, was pretty underwhelmed, then as a result didn't get around to watching the rest of it until a few months later. I loved it. It gets so damn much better and the ending was really really satisfying. The prequel mini-season was awesome as well. Then I heard about Andy Whitfield dying, and haven't gotten around to watching any of the episodes with the new guy as Spartacus. Is it still good?

Frazod 02-06-2013 08:31 PM

Same old same old, which is great. Still prefer Andy, but Liam has made the part his own.

Deberg_1990 02-06-2013 08:37 PM

Season 4 right? But the 2nd season was a prequel?

Nope, just like comics, prequels are either prequels or 0, they do not get a number above 1.. So this is season 3 or sparticus..

Silock 02-06-2013 10:59 PM

I'm bored with it.

Buehler445 02-07-2013 12:07 AM

It's good enough. The first one in particular set the bar so high that it's hard to follow. There isn't so much going on, but I think it is important to focus on the scope of the war.

There is some discussion in the Spartacus: Blood and Sand thread. Check it out.

Pasta Little Brioni 02-07-2013 04:51 PM

It's alright, but I always yearn for Batiatus watching it.

Frazod 02-07-2013 05:22 PM

At least we got a Jupiter's Cock! in the last episode. LMAO

Kinda annoyed about the appearance of Caesar. He had nothing to do with the 3rd servile war and was in fact only about 9 years old at the time...

I was waiting for Crassus and the real war to start...

He's also sort of a low rent Brad Pitt Achilles.

Yeah, that slightly annoyed me too . Otherwise its been pretty good so far this season. I hope they give each of the big three(Crixus, Ganicus, and Sparticus) a glorious death!! (instead of crucifixion)

Caesar? Hmm...interesting. If I wanted to see something awesome with Caesar I'd just watch Rome. Still gonna check out Spartacus post Whitfield.

I finally logged in to Starz Online so I could watch the second (prequel) episodes. I had never seen them before. So far I've watched three of the six - I'm really enjoying them filling in the backstory.

I don't have starz so I have to wait until this season starts coming out on Amazon video.

Ceasar sucks. I wish they'd have left that out. I wonder if they're going to have crixus split off and die.

I've watched the last 4 episodes and i'm definitely digging it... solid acting, good stories, plenty of action and boobies... whats not to love?

Hated seeing the sword maker from the walled city go down, in real life he would've crushed that bitch.

Pasta Little Brioni 02-23-2013 12:51 PM

Yeah she's annoying as **** this season.

Rented season two tonight on a whim, omg... watching season three is incredibly tame by comparison, they've really cut down on that now... two is unbelieveably slam full of gore and sex.

Enjoying it quite a bit, looking forward to going back to season one soon.

Sounds like he's talking about last season. It was good. The new guy takes a little getting used to, but it was still good and if you liked season one and the prequel season, you will still like season 2. I have not seen season 3 this year yet, but they are on my DVR and I will be watching them when I have some time.

Easy 6 02-26-2013 01:51 PM

Finished season two and am halfway through season one... really, really enjoyed the back story provided by season two, what a world it must have been back then... i'm officially a huge fan now.

Season one, while lacking the production values (particularly the cgi) of forthcoming seasons, may be my favorite so far and it mostly has to do with Andy Whitfield... he just has a much bigger range of emotion than the new guy, he also actually looks like he could be Bulgarian/Thracian, the new guy lacks his range and looks like just another pretty boy englishman.

The fight choreography is truly incredible, some of the very best sequences you'll find anywhere... spartacus and crixxus(sp?) vs theocales was brutal or the free for all in the circle of fire at the end of season two... awesome.

But like i said in an earlier post, season three REALLY seems tamed down so far... way less gore and sex, plus this new guy simply doesnt have Whitfields gravitas, not at all, what a shame the guy died of cancer.

lcarus 02-26-2013 01:55 PM

Without any spoilers, is the guy with the bum leg (name escapes me) still on the show? He is my favorite character.

Ah, the conniving rat? to be honest i've yet to see him on season three... i havent seen him killed off yet, but maybe they just left him out of the new season since the house of battiatus is no more and they presumed him to have went on about his way or whatever.

No, the prequel was not season two.. The prequel was a prequel or season zero.. Season 2 was when the new Spartacus took over..

That was my biggest problem. It is difficult to transfer from gladiator to full scale war.

It still has some potential. I'll see it out.

Pasta Little Brioni 03-03-2013 10:18 AM

It's different, not as enjoyable, but still watchable.

Easy 6 03-10-2013 03:06 PM

I've been REALLY disappointed in the last two episodes, its like they're just mailing in the final season, i'd be willing to bet the original lineup of directors and writers arent even working on it anymore.

The dialogue has gotten reeeal corny and clunky.

The fight scenes are suffering, last week when Spartacus, Gannacus and co. are ambushed by the romans when the ship docked, Gannacus goes for a guys legs with his sword and the guy leaps forward in a somersault long before the sword gets anywhere near him, it was painfully obvious and they just went ahead with it.

The new black chick who plays Crixxus girl flat out SUCKS as an actress.

Even the costumes are lacking believability... too clean when they should look dirty, too dirty when they should be cleaner, too many extras in identical, cookie cutter getups.

Its too bad because the first two seasons were ****ing excellent, new episode tonight at 8, but i'm preparing to be disappointed again.

Easy 6 04-05-2013 08:51 PM

Last episode on at 10 central tonight, i almost forgot.

Its a two part episode and i'm only catching the last 15 minutes of the second to last show -drats-... looking forward to the last episode of what was a KILLER series, atleast for a while.

ed* they've apparently changed tactics and are only doing the second to last show tonight, i SWEAR they said it was a two part finale 2 weeks ago.

SERIES finale? Nice. I still haven't started watching again lol. Last time I left off, the gang was looking for Crixus chick (forgot her name) in the mines. Crixus got taken but they got the girl I believe. It was 2 or 3 episodes into season 2 I believe. I guess it's season 2. I refer to it with my brother as season 3 because I count Gods of the Arena as season 2 in my little stupid world.

All in all, it had to end. And the end is a tough sell, from gladiators to all out war is tough to wrap one's head around, much less produce. And this is better than I expected.

Yes.. of course ALL of the stuff that disparages him in that way comes from the writing of his political enemies. I'm not sure it's so reliable.

It should be noted in Roman culture was much different about sexuality.

Taking it in the butt made you submissive and feminine and was looked down upon. Sticking it in a man's butt was not considered a big deal at all and would have never drawn a comment from other romans. That he was submissive to the advances of a man IS what 'history' says. Though again, it's just as likely simple slander.

He really shouldn't even be in the damn show, because he was a child at the time of the 3rd servile war.

Frazod 04-11-2013 01:34 PM

I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict that Caesar survives the final battle.

I have just gotten through the first five episodes of this season. The story telling and character suspense isn't nearly as good as before but it is still a fun show to watch. I am excited to finish out the series as it is getting tense wondering how they will begin to kill off the main gladiators.

About the bold, I am not sure why you say that. Caesar was born around 100 BC and Spartacus died in 71 BC. The actor playing Caesar is about the perfect age. Granted, it doesn't appear that Caesar had anything to do with Crassus until much later, so in that sense he didn't really belong, but his portrayed age and character does fit as far as the timeline goes.

listopencil 12-31-2013 05:05 PM

Well that's too bad. I only watched the original episodes (with Andy Whitfield) and enjoyed those quite a bit. The show has sort of a special place in my heart. It popped up on NetFlix and I gave it a try while I was trying to distract myself from the death of my wife. Imagine my surprise when I found out that he died just a few few months before my wife did, also from Cancer. So I'll just leave it as it is. Whitfield will be Spartacus to me and I don't need to watch any of the other stuff.

Yeah, the new guy was no Andy Whitfield and the show overall just wasn't as good in the third season... having said that it was still one of the best things on tv.

lcarus 03-26-2014 07:15 PM

I finally finished this series. I enjoyed the final 2 seasons a lot. I really missed Whitfield, but obviously there wasn't a whole lot they could do about that. The replacement guy was ok. I actually liked him a whole lot better than the replacement actress for Naevia. Good god I disliked her, and I disliked the direction they took the character.

I also hated the inclusion of Julius Caesar and the scene where....you know. It was just pointless for shock value. I thought I'd dislike the final 2 seasons without either John Hannah or Andy Whitfield, but luckily there was still Crixus and Gannicus. I ended up caring more about Gannicus than Spartacus towards the end.

ThaVirus 03-26-2014 07:19 PM

Damn, this show is still going on?

I've only watched the first season with Spartacus and, I guess, the second with Gannicus.

Ragged Robin 03-26-2014 07:33 PM

Season 2 (the prequel being Season 0 in my mind) was crap. Season 3 was really good though after it gets rolling (starts off slow/blah). Liam McIntyre did a good job taking over for Whitfield, though the change + the bad script for Season 2 made it hard to swallow. He shines in the last season though.

Season 1, Whitfield was perfect. Sad also he died. Great throughout.

Season 0, I thought it gave great backstory. Introduced Gannicus whom came on more in the later seasons. Also Ashur and Oenomaus got more face time.

Season 2, started out very bad, kept getting better except for one bitch. Crixus dumb woman. By the end the guy playing Sparticus finally got in shape for the role.

Season 3, good, nothing great. Everyone knew how it was going to end. Just seeing how they would do it.

If they ever put all of them together for a bluray box set I will buy it.

It is a show for all man's man.

That's what made it so great. They played with the audience based on our preexisting knowledge on the mythos--the Crixus/Spartacus initial split being a ruse, "victory," etc. I came in thinking that it was going to end in tragedy because we all know the rebellion fails but how they presented it was from another perspective that I didn't really consider--they did exactly what they set out to do, died as free men and accepting the consequences of their own actions. ie Even if they didn't really stand a chance splitting up, Spartacus had to let Crixus go because that's the reason why they're fighting in the first place, to have the freedom to make their own choices. Spartacus realises that he's not a god or a savior or a dictator, just an idealist. It sounds pretty simple but it was perfectly executed (although I didn't like the whole Gannicus thing at the end..)

Agree on Naevia. She was terribad. Really really distracted from a great series.
