my dog died somewhat out of the blue today.

Has anybody had a somewhat young dog (6 years) die within 10 hours of being completely healthy? got up this morning and let him out and he was chipper as always, came in and peed right on the carpet and i let him out again because he had never done that before. This time he just went outside and laid down, which he never does either, he's always running around as happy as can be. Next I know he's throwing up ever hour or so and became very lethargic. all this started at about 10 this morning, started throwing up and became lethargic at noonish, tried getting him to drink, which he did until about 3 when no matter what he put in his stomach it came right back up, went downstairs at about 5 and noticed he hadnt moved from the same spot for over an hour and ran upstairs debating if i needed to take him to a 24 hour emergency vet and my girlfriend came over and we were sitting with him and his breathing became rather labored so I said im getting the car, we're going right now! And as soon as I got the car started up my girlfriend ran out screaming that I had to come in right now!! So I ran in and watched my best friend take the last few gasps of his wonderful life...

does anybody have any ideas what the **** could have happened? i mean symptoms start between 10-12 and dog dies at 6:40... How is that possible? Ive looked everywhere for anything poisonous that he could have gotten in to but found nothing. Anything to bring peace back to thew house, any vets on here?

Very sorry to hear. Dogs are great. Had to have been something he ate. A lot of people foods can be really poisonous. Dark chocolate, grapes, turkey

Shox 12-30-2012 10:54 PM

Man so sorry. I'm certainly not an expert, but it sounds like he got into some poison of some kind.

Buck 12-30-2012 10:55 PM

Shitty. Sorry man, that's horrible.

Jim Jones 12-30-2012 10:56 PM

Sorry to hear about that.

Look up "bloat" - almost lost my dog to that a few years ago but got him to a vet. Similar symptoms to what you experienced.

That's seems like an awful big leap to a conclusion. It could've been something like that, but there are a lot of other possibilities as well.

Sorry to hear about your pup, man. :(

DeezNutz 12-30-2012 10:57 PM

Very sorry about this.

Sounds like the dog ate something that caused an obstruction.

Dallas Chief 12-30-2012 10:58 PM

Sorry to hear that man. Bummer :( First thought was poison of some sort, or something poisonous to dogs.

threebag 12-30-2012 10:58 PM

Poison. Sorry to hear about your dog.

DonkyPuncher 12-30-2012 10:58 PM

Maybe someone poisoned him when he was outside, I always keep an eye on my dogs when I let them out people are sick now a days, sorry to hear about your loss

Boise_Chief 12-30-2012 10:59 PM

Possibly a bowel impaction or perforation. Do you give him bones, rawhides, or balls to chew on?

Hammock Parties 12-30-2012 10:59 PM

going to have an autopsy done tomorrow because i cant just not know what killed my dog

BigRedChief 12-30-2012 11:00 PM

Sorry for the loss of your friend. Hope you find the reason.

Shox 12-30-2012 11:01 PM

Please update us when you find out. I would like to prevent this from happening to my dog.

That was my thought, (poison). A friend of ours lost their dog because it got into some poison in their garage. Symptoms were very similar, (vomiting, urination, lethargic, etc.).

Sucks man.

Sounds a little like gastric torsion (stomach flipping over). Large chest cavity?

My understanding with obstructions is that most dogs won't even try to drink with an obstruction, whereas with torsion you'll get the drinking and vomiting; just can't keep anything down.

Sorry about your loss. I hope whatever you find out helps.

threebag 12-30-2012 11:14 PM

Some ****sticks soak sponges in blood and leave them out for dogs to ingest. The dog can't pass the sponge and die. It sucks like hell to lose a pet.

Demonpenz 12-30-2012 11:16 PM

Sorry man. Hope you get a new one.

Buehler445 12-30-2012 11:19 PM

Damn. Sorry for your loss.

I would be totally demolished if Chief Dog did that.

FWIW, he did eat some wood (dumbass), and got an obstruction somewhere in his GI tract. It wasn't a huge deal, but he threw up a couple times and wife freaked. The vet massaged it around a bit and gave him a laxative (not sure why, but he never got the runs) and was fine pretty much right after she massaged his guts.

If it was an obstruction, I'd think it would have ruptured something. Just an obstruction wouldn't make him go downhill like that I wouldn't think. I know virtually nothing about vet biology, but that's my take.

that's what one of my friends in vet school was thinking

ForeverChiefs58 12-30-2012 11:47 PM

I had a dog that got sick suddenly once. It was back in college and I was a dog breeder, and went up to see him quite often.

I noticed it as soon as I opened the door to let her back in the house she didn't come to me but was just lying on the ground. Turned out her stomach flipped and was cutting everything off, including her air; she was having problems breathing and moving around.

They stapled her stomach to each side of her rib cage and she ended up being ok. But losing a pet always sucks. Sorry for your loss.

Valiant 12-30-2012 11:49 PM

Sorry for your loss..

Dr. Johnny Fever 12-30-2012 11:57 PM

Ugh. Sorry to hear dude.

Hammock Parties 12-31-2012 12:13 AM

everything i have read about the gastric torsion is that the dogs try to throw up but arent able to, yet my dog was throwing huge amounts

Buck 12-31-2012 07:03 PM

Did you figure out what happened Jayhawkerman?

Baby Lee 12-31-2012 07:09 PM

Lost my dog right on a year ago to 'idiopathic seizures.' Around Christmas, he had a couple of incidents where he's get overexcited for his treat and kind of just fall over from a crouch, a couple weeks later he was falling over and wetting himself once or twice a week. Didn't make it to the end of January. He was 12 yo and the vets had nothing for him, it was just something that happened to some dogs.

ILChief 12-31-2012 07:11 PM

When I was younger, my dog almost died from eating rat poison. Maybe he got into something?

siberian khatru 12-31-2012 07:12 PM

I had a 4-year-old dog get sick, took him to the vet, he gave him a steroid shot, that perked him up for a couple of days, then when it wore off he reverted. Next morning, he could barely move, and I was trying to get him to get up and go to the vet again, he dropped dead right in front of me.

Vet did a necropsy but could never figure out what it was.

Buck 12-31-2012 07:15 PM

Sounds like sometimes Dogs just die young because of genetics...

Bump 12-31-2012 07:20 PM

Damn, I'm sorry to hear that. I would be a wreck if that happened to mine. That's horrible.

FlaChief58 12-31-2012 07:25 PM

Sorry for your loss.

I lost a 2 year old German Shepard to bloat. Sounds about the same. Sorry for your loss. It sucks.

Hog's Gone Fishin 12-31-2012 08:09 PM

My Dad was a vet. He's retired now but I'll give him a call and ask him.

Mr. Laz 12-31-2012 08:10 PM

sorry :(

sounds like he might of eaten something poisonous ... but that's just a guess.

Ok. Dad's first comment was to ask you if your dog has read Chiefsplanet lately. Then if he has , did he read the thread regarding Pioli may not get fired ?

Fire Me Boy! 12-31-2012 08:14 PM

Sounds like poison to me. Very sorry, dude. That sucks.

KurtCobain 12-31-2012 08:15 PM

ROFL At the set up.

Sorry to hear the news man. Worse day ever I've got to imagine.

KCFaninSEA 12-31-2012 09:22 PM

Sounds like he got into something. Sorry to hear that. Terrible. I had to put my 17 year old dog down 1 year ago the 28th. It wasn't all sudden like yours but it still sucked. My condolences.

ragedogg69 12-31-2012 10:46 PM

thats awful. I am so sorry for your loss. My first dog I ever got had a seizure on christmas and I have been watching him like a hawk. It will hurt horribly when he goes.
