Will definitely have to watch this. I can't say I'm the biggest stoner/doom fan, but I do love Kyuss, Fu Manchu, Goatsnake, Melvins and others. Thanks for posting this.

The Poz 04-16-2012 10:37 PM

When you're done with that and have another hour and bong to kill...

No- but much thanks!

Very cool thread.

WhiteWhale 04-17-2012 05:05 PM

I love this brand of music. I like a lot of different stuff, but I have a special place in my heart for stoner/stomp/fuzz/doom rock. It all mines that vein that really attracts me to it.

It's very heavy and yet very melodic at the same time.

I don't think it's been out for more than a couple weeks now, enjoy.
It usually takes me about 35 minutes to walk home from work each night but on the days I have this album roaring through my headphones I can make it home in about 20 minutes.

I always dug the early bands like Sabbath and the Stooges but when I first heard Spine of God by Monster Magnet something went off in my head and I was hooked for good.

What the hell? When I typed "the stooges" that emoticon came up. Kinda freaked me out when I re-read it.

I'm 30. I grew up in the 90's and Kyuss was the band that got me into this type of music. Then I just had to work backwards.

Saw Wino with Clutch a while ago, but his band bailed on him prior to the show so he just played an acoustic set. I was disappointed. Wino is legend.

KCUnited 04-21-2012 05:21 PM

Sabbath was so far before my time that I never got into them. My first exposure to Doom was from a Hard 'n' Heavy VHS from '89/'90. It had an interview with Candlemass. At the time I thought these dudes were total clowns, that particular Hard 'n' Heavy also featured Heathen, Testament, Exodus, and I believe Laaz Rockit, stuff that I was more into. It wasn't until later in life that I learned to appreciate Doom.

Here is the Candlemass clip from Hard 'n' Heavy 7.

So far i'm like Electric Wizards the best, but i'm still looking for something a little groovier, a little more melodic, something these guys did/still do specialize in, bought this cd when it came out after hearing one song & never regretted it...

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/-NHWF1cCRw0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Monster Magnet, same thing... plenty heavy, but still has plenty of groove & rhythm, fell COMPLETELY in love the first time i heard Negasonic...

It's about time you got here. ;)
Two of my favorite bands you've got there. Hung out and lost some brain cells with the boys from Monster Magnet a couple times. Great guys.
Whitewater will always make me crazy while both SuperJudge and Spine of God can be found on my top 10 list. A very exclusive list. :harumph:

Discovered Earthless through this already. Glad I finally got around to watching it.

Easy 6 06-12-2012 11:00 PM

Yeeeah, wow, daaamn...

AHAB is A MONSTER... glad i listened to all of the post hype, didnt even make it through the second song before i had to post... they're like Floyd met old Sabbath & they had a Danzig baby that sang everything from the worn out guttural demon growl (which i normally cant stand yet this guy OWNS it, the way they do it Perfectly fits it), to normal howl, to something approaching opera... no bullshit, i'm stealing this album.

So this is the new school...

My favorite current band - either QOTSA or Eagles of Death Metal.

My favorite older band - either Black Sabbath or Motorhead.

To say this genre of music is special to me is an understatement. :D

I thought it was interesting the discussion about 15 minutes in about how cocaine changed psychedelic music.

htismaqe 09-24-2012 07:00 AM

The Earthless segment at 12 minutes TOTALLY reminds me of the last band I was in...I wonder how they keep it going? We always found that we lacked focus which lead to a lack of gigs. :D

htismaqe 09-24-2012 08:48 AM

THANKS SO MUCH for posting this.

Just finished watching the whole thing, front to back.

Incredible. Absolutely mindblowingly incredible.

At the 56:36 mark in the documentary, anybody know what that song is?

The Poz 09-24-2012 01:01 PM

I'm guessing it was Sunn O))). They did show a band member right when the song came on. Sounds like them

As for High on Fire. They just released their N American headlining tour dates. If you get the chance GO SEE THEM!!!!!!!!

http://campaign.r20.constantcontact....Y2TtjzWA%3D%3D

Notable dates:

November 26 - Toronto, ON - Opera House
November 30 - New York, NY - Bowery Ballroom
December 6 - St. Louis, MO - Firebird
December 10 - Kansas City, MO - The Riot Room

Really? The stuff right before and right after the song I'm talking about sounds more like Sunn O))) to me. For a second, I thought it might be off the Earth album that they showed briefly ("Hex; Or Printing In The Infernal Method") since it had that more mellow clean guitar sound but I can't find it there.

The song starts right when Stephen O'Malley comes on-screen. Right after him is a guitar player with short hair and beard - who is that guy? Because I think that might be it.

The Poz 09-24-2012 02:03 PM

Baroness, Mastodon, Kyuss, Kvelertak, Kylesa.

None of those are exactly like The Sowrd, but they're all badass.

First things first, I found out the tune I'm trying to find was WRITTEN FOR THE MOVIE by a couple of guys that call them ThunderLabs. Unfortunately, it's not available anywhere other than on the movie itself. :(

Anyway, I made a list of bands from the movie to check out and today's selection was Om.

Holy shit, I ended up going in a COMPLETELY different direction than I expected. You should check this one out: "Haqq al-Yaqin"

Om is fucking great! I saw them a couple years ago and they blew me away! The bass has never sounded more evil.

For those who don't know Om's lead singer Al Cisneros was also the lead singer from Sleep along with Matt Pike, now lead singer/guitar for High on Fire.

Al Cisneros' tone is kicking my face.

I also spent much of yesterday listening to Acid King. OMFG

I've been a stoner rock fan for 2 decades and wasn't aware of how much of it I'd never heard! I was really only familiar with the desert scene (Kyuss, Fu Manchu, QOTSA).
