Rank the MCU

There's always a debate in the comments following any post about the latest MCU film. Let's list the films according to Box Office Mojo, by current domestic gross.

1. Avengers ($623M)
2. Ultron ($459M)
3. Iron Man 3 ($409M)
4. Civil War ($408M)
5. GotG 2 ($389M)
6. Spider Man Homecoming ($334M)
7. GotG ($333M)
8. Iron Man ($318M)
9. Ragnarok ($314M)
10. Iron Man 2 ($312M)
11. Black Panther ($291M)
12. Winter Soldier ($259M)
13. Doctor Strange ($232M)
14. Dark World ($206M)
15. Thor ($181M)
16. Ant-Man ($180)
17. CA: First Avenger ($176M)
18. Incredible Hulk [Ed Norton] ($134M)

This doesn't include the non-Marvel Studios stuff obviously (Fantastic Four, Eric Bana Hulk, Deadpool, earlier Spidermans, Wolverine, other stuff like Daredevil and Ghost Rider). That list is actually almost 50 films and even includes stuff like Howard the Duck. However, I think the two films that SHOULD be included in the discussion are the two best of that bunch, so I'm counting "Deadpool" and "Logan" to make it a list of 20.

Now... create your list in order of preference and discuss violently.

For me:

Cream of the crop: (1) Iron Man, (2) GotG, (3) Avengers, (4) Deadpool, (5) Winter Soldier, (6) Civil War, (7) Black Panther, (8) Doctor Strange, (9) CA: First Avenger, (10) Logan

(I rank IM and Avengers higher than their actual quality, simply because IM is the first and is a very good origin story and Avengers was the first ensemble.)

Decent but not great: (11) GotG 2, (12) Ant-Man, (13) Homecoming, (14) Ragnarok

(I enjoyed Ragnarok but thought it was a little weird and scattershot.)

Pretty average: (15) Ultron, (16) Thor, (17) Iron Man 2, (18) Dark World

(The only reason "Dark World" isn't in the last group is because of the actors.)

Downright bad: (19) Incredible Hulk, (20) Iron Man 3

(Ugh. "IM3" is such a piece of shit. Nonsensical, weird man-boy relationship in the middle, dumb ending.)

Thank you! Glad I'm not the only one that hates IM3. what a shitty film that was and still can't believe it cracked over a billion at the box office.:roll eyes:

For me, most of these MCU films are mediocre entertainment. I mean, I still go to the theaters to check em out but they all seem to have the same damn generic formula . (like assemble line franchise films or something) Usually I rate most of these MCU films 5.5 to 6.5 /10 if we're using the IMDB scale.

My top favorites would be CA: The Winter Soldier because it plays out more like a political thriller / action film . Also dug the 1st Avengers film for the most part even though I find Loki to be such an overrated pussy villain . It was definitely cool to see them all assemble and interact with each other for the 1st time .

Hopefully Infinity War isn't a big mess.

Best of the Best:

1) Winter Soldier - Turns the superhero movie into a political thriller works perfectly because of Cap.
2) Civil War - What should of been Avengers 2. Zemo worked very well as an outside the box villain.
3) GotG - Great Space Operatic comedy. The main actors hit it out of the park.
4) Iron Man - Really set the tone for the MCU.
5) Black Panther - A love letter to Christopher Priest's Black Panther run.

Great:

6) Ant Man - Perhaps Marvel's biggest risk to date but pulled off incredibly well.
7) Blade - The movie that rescued the superhero genre from the pits. The opening sequence turned what looked like a standard horror movie into a supernatural action movie and probably is still the best heroic character introduction.
8) Avengers - Pulled off the team aspect right. See Justice League and Suicide Squad.
9) Dr. Strange - Strange got the least character development. He is still a jerk just "our" jerk and with magical powers. Still introduced magic to the MCU and hopefully Doom in Strange 2.
10) X-Men: First Class. Revamped the X-Men franchise well.

Bottom 5:
1) Iron Man 3: Terrible plot and revealing the Mandarin as that just pissed off fans. If 'All Hail to the King' was actually the stinger then it might have saved the film a little.
2) X-Men Apocalypse: Just a terrible movie. At least Days of Future Past only sin was wasting Peter Dinklege.
3) Thor Dark World: Really wasted Christopher Eccelston. Kind of generic.
4) X-Men 3: Terrible meshing of plots that completely failed.
5) Fantastic Four(2015): Hard to start where this is so terrible. For one turning Doom into whatever the hell that was is perhaps the greatest crime.

I liked it. Because it was different

But it was basically Shane Black dusting off an script from the 80s/90s and grafting a Superhero story on top of it.

The one problem I have with it is Marvel never explained how Tony got his lab and tech back after he’s shown torching it at the end of IM3.

The next movie IM appears in was Avengers 2 and his lab and tech is normal but nothing wa ever explained

I am probably in the minority on this, but I wasn't at all impressed with Deadpool.

I also thought Iron Man 3 was a waste but was at least slightly entertaining.

The X-Men 2 and 3 were just mind numbing....

All of the rest of them are good to Good to Great.....I guess I am that much of a Marvel fanboy.

Direckshun 02-24-2018 04:40 PM

I can't rank them, but I'll put them in tiers:

Great:

Avengers
Civil War
Black Panther
Thor

Very good:

Iron Man
Avengers 2
Captain America 2
Guardians of the Galaxy
Guardians of the Galaxy 2
Spiderman Homecoming

Pretty good:

Incredible Hulk
Captain America
Iron Man 3
Doctor Strange
Ant-Man

Terrible:

Iron Man 2
Thor 2

WHY HAVE I NOT SEEN THIS FILM YET

Thor 3

Here is my reply to any person in this thread who thinks Thor was anything less than a top tier Marvel film.

You need to go watch Ragnarok right now, Direck. Report back on what you find.

Without reading your link, I very much enjoy Thor. I will say that I think it's grown on me over time, though. I was pretty "meh, whatever" about it when it first came out, but I'll stop and watch if I stumble on it these days. Great flick.

Logan is near Dark Knight territory to me. Just an amazing movie totally. Not just comic book movie.

Edit: Just looked it up... X-Men movies aren't part of the MCU huh? I guess movie Black Panther and Iron Man up a spot and make Winter Soldier my #3

Domestic gross is a BS measure. Global gross is a way better measure of a movies earnings.
