EA Getting Rid of Online Passes

I recently bought a used copy of Battlefield 3 as an early B-day present for my son, only to find out he couldn't play online with his friends. (which was kind of the whole point.)

This is good news.

EA Getting Rid of Online Passes
That’s that.

Online Passes – the controversial attempt by many publishers to encourage new game sales by locking online-centric content for used copies – has become engrained in gaming culture over the last several years. But according to a report on VentureBeat, one major company is doing away with them.

Electronic Arts – the mega-publisher behind a litany of games including Madden, FIFA, Battlefield, Dead Space, Mass Effect and more – will be “discontinuing” its Online Pass initiative. In a statement provided to VentureBeat, EA’s John Reseburg said that “none of our new EA titles will include that feature.”

Reseburg admitted that Online Passes just don’t seem to be working. “Initially launched as an effort to package a full menu of online content and services, many players didn’t respond to the format. We’ve listened to the feedback and decided to do away with it moving forward.”

Many major publishers – including Sony and Ubisoft – continue to use Online Passes, though interestingly, Microsoft never seemed to go down that road. Will EA’s abolishment of this system coerce other publishers to follow suit?

What? That makes no sense.

Well, that is probably bad news..

Pessimist me says, it means games will ship with less, then two weeks after launch will have new content and items, but only with small purchases. Or season pass for the whole year at a discount.

Then even if the game resells at gamestop, most of the data will have to be bought online to have the complete game for most gamers. They get that sold without having to make more physical copies of the game.

i'd be thrilled if they lowered the price of games and left the online component out.

Yeah, I know. they won't lower the price.

The pessimist in me says next week it'll be confirmed that the next Xbox console will employ some sort of online authentication, and if it's optional, EA will be one of the developers opting to use it.

Essentially, "online pass" replaced with "entire game pass."

meh, I'm done with console gaming.

XBOX games are a joke. Developers are forced to make shitty games for mass appeal. A game can be good until it becomes popular, then Activision or EA will buy it and ruin it. Or just ruin it.
