Question for the DD-WRT experts

I'm having a problem with excess bandwidth and can't figure out where it is coming from. My Buffalo router had a really good bandwidth monitor but it is only a one size fits all overall usage monitor. I need something that will monitor usage on each individual device. Are there any add ons for DDWRT that will do this? I'm not really having any luck finding anything that will do this.

I did find this but I have no idea how to install it to my router.

How many devices do you have?

Can you disconnect them all and then reconnect one at a time and watch the bandwidth?

No need for that just use WPA2.

MAC address filtering is useless. You'd be better off just turning it off.

MAC filtering: This is like handing a security guard a pad of paper with a list of names. Then when someone comes up to the door and wants entry, the security guard looks at the person's name tag and compares it to his list of names and determines whether to open the door or not. Do you see a problem here? All someone needs to do is watch an authorized person go in and forge a name tag with that person's name. The comparison to a wireless LAN here is that the name tag is the MAC address. The MAC address is just a 12 digit long HEX number that can be viewed in clear text with a sniffer. A sniffer to a hacker is like a hammer to a carpenter except the sniffer is free. Once the MAC address is seen in the clear, it takes about 10 seconds to cut-paste a legitimate MAC address in to the wireless Ethernet adapter settings and the whole scheme is defeated. MAC filtering is absolutely worthless since it is one of the easiest schemes to attack. The shocking thing is that so many large organizations still waste the time to implement these things. The bottom line is, MAC filtering takes the most effort to manage with zero ROI (return on investment) in terms of security gain.

Your best bet is to use a sniffer. Get a cheap ethernet hub and insert it on the WAN side of your router and just capture all the traffic.

This. Someone's probably throttling the bandwidth with torrent uploads or skype streams or something.

If you're going to do the "disconnect and reconnect" thing, your best bet is to change the WPA2 pre-shared key and then reboot the router.

You'll disconnect everything and nothing can get back on until you re-enter the key. That will help you account for wireless intruders or neighbors that are stealing your internet and it will also account for devices that you might have otherwise forgotten (I have over 50 wireless devices on my network so yes, you can forget sometimes).

Here is some good info - http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php...tflow_and_ntop

Switch to the Tomato firmware.

I don't think Tomato does top talkers either, does it?
