Was the Hali/Houston dance a traditional African dance? I'm just curious what that was?

I watched Nigeria win the gold at the 1996 Olympics in Athens and they were dancing similar to that.

Yes. It is a variation of the traditional African fire god dance in which the natives are known to engage when attempting to prevent a volcano from erupting and covering their village with 90 feet of molten lava.
