A Nice Ending Today

A little Orange Tabby Cat we call "Buddy" has been hanging around a lot the past month or so. He comes by first thing in the morning for breakfast, and sometimes he stops by in the evening. He's a little skinny, but is not starving. And he's not feral, he's very friendly. We haven't been sure if he belongs to anybody. It was hard to tell for sure.

Wednesday night a front came through, temp dropped from 75 to 40 in about two hours. Right before I went to bed, I noticed Buddy Cat was on the front porch around 11pm getting rained on, he was all wet and meowing. So I picked him up, brought him in the house and put him in the heated garage.

Then it was sleeting all day Thursday, snowed on Friday. So we kept him in the garage. Yesterday I put a collar on him with a note taped to it with my phone number, saying "call if this is your cat." I cracked open the garage door so he could leave if he wanted, but he slept in his cat bed all day.

Today it was sunny, and Buddy took off in the morning. This afternoon I got a call. It was a kid, probably 8 or 9 years old. He asked if I put the collar on his cat. I said yes, that we wanted to make sure he had a family.

He does.

He has a little boy at home, and kitty's name is actually Rex. The boy was crying because his kitty didn't come home for a few days. I explained to him we wanted "Rex" to be safe, and we never meant to keep him. and now that we know he has a family, we'll know who to call if he shows up here in bad weather again. The boy thanked me for taking care of Rex.

All's well that ends well. Rex is home, little boy is happy, and I don't have to adopt another stray. It's a good day.

This house is way too damn dusty.

You did a wonderful thing and that boy will remember it forever.

I thought this was a thread about the Royals comeback victory today.

Good for Rex. My cat runs away sometimes, but it's to get away from my 1 year old son that torments him. He's generally good about it though. Come to think of it, he might be a masochist.

Siamese with an attitude is the best feline you can have. I had a monster over 20 pounds.

That is a nice human interest story. Glad you shared it with us. You could send it to Reader's Digest.

Collar with note. Nice thinking. Going to have to remember that trick.

Last spring, I learned how to deal with a birds' nest that falls from a tree (all babies survive) with branches too high to reach via ladder. Get a cardboard box, fill it with newspaper, place nest and young in the box, and tape it to the tree. Parents will return.

We of the human species sometimes need to learn the ropes about how to handle our animal brethren.
