NHL and NHLPA reach an agreement - lockout FINALLY over

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...cba-framework/

NHL lockout: Owners, players reach tentative agreement on CBA framework

After more than 16 consecutive hours of bargaining on the 113th day of the lockout, the NHL and NHLPA reached a tentative agreement on the framework of a new collective bargaining agreement around 5 a.m. Sunday.

“We have reached an agreement on the framework of a new collective bargaining agreement, the details of which need to be put to paper,” NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said during a news conference, standing next to NHLPA Executive Director Donald Fehr.

“We’ve got to dot a lot of I’s and cross a lot of T’s,” Bettman said. “There’s still a lot of work to be done, but the basic framework of the deal has been agreed upon.”

The deal still requires ratification from the players and the NHL’s Board of Governors before it becomes official, but the league is expected to play a 50- or 48-game season that starts no later than Jan. 19.

I'll never understand the mentality people have for going into a thread about a sport you don't care about specifically to tell everyone that you don't care. There are plenty who still do.

Rugby Thompson 01-06-2013 08:47 AM

a sport i dont care about? I've lived in a hockey city for 20 years, I spent like 7 years playing it.

it's turned into a soft greedy corrupt league and it's boring now, the last years stanley cup playoffs were ****ing horrid.

KCUnited 01-06-2013 08:49 AM

Yeah, take off, eh? Ya hoser.

Rugby Thompson 01-06-2013 08:50 AM

I'm especially curious to see how well fans turn out to games at this point. Though I'm thrilled the bullshit is over, I've certainly feeling less warm and fuzzy about spending money to go and watch games this year. I'm pretty content going to my little CHL games for $10 a pop.

I actually do care about hockey. Just stating that NOBODY else cares.

This has been seriously damaging to the sport.

We've had a USHL team here for years and it's quite a bit of fun.

We flirted with the AHL but the team folded after like 3 years.

lewdog 01-06-2013 09:05 AM

Well I don't follow hockey but I live in a city that has hockey and would like to go to some games. Just curious how much of the season has been missed and how many games will this season be?

CaliforniaChief 01-06-2013 09:08 AM

Man, I liked the Kings being defending Stanley Cup Champions for 2 years. Oh well, I'm happy for the people down the food chain who were hurting. And I enjoy hockey, so it's all good.

Rugby Thompson 01-06-2013 09:08 AM

i miss the old NHL

CoMoChief 01-06-2013 09:09 AM

OH REJOICE!!!!

watching hockey on TV blows......going to live games is a lot of fun.

wish KC would have gotten the Penguins... would have enjoyed that more than a NBA team. Though the Thunder would be cool too.

About half the season has been missed, they are talking anywhere from 46-52 games this season.

ChiefMojo 01-06-2013 09:16 AM

I admit I'm happy the NHL is back but I admit I'm not happy how quickly they go into lockouts. It just seems like the other day the NHL had a lockout (which caused ESPN to drop the NHL) and now only a short time later to have another one that nearly cost everyone yet another season.

I heard they will likely have a 48 game season now (like the end of the article stated). I'm just glad it is over and hockey is back.

Predarat 01-06-2013 09:17 AM

Glad its back, too bad they waited too long and the Winter Classic is gone.

The good thing is it will be 8-10 years before this happens again.

Imon Yourside 01-06-2013 09:28 AM

I remember when this shit happened in baseball, thereafter I hated the sport even though it was my favorite as a kid. Still hate baseball to this day because of it, I can't be arsed to care.

Been enjoying the Eagles and an occasional Cutthroats game myself. At this point I wish they would have just waited until next season.

Discuss Thrower 01-06-2013 10:09 AM

Should be an act of Congress starting both a union head and league president / commissioner should lose their jobs if they allow a sport to grt locked out.

morphius 01-06-2013 10:16 AM

Sadly this doesn't fix their crappy TV deal, and means I still won't be able to see my Av's without paying for it. So frustrating.

EdmontonChiefsFan 01-06-2013 10:23 AM

Football has now overtaken hockey as my favourite sport...........and I am a Chiefs fan so that is saying a lot.

Spott 01-06-2013 10:27 AM

Lol, I didn't even know they weren't playing hockey.

okcchief 01-06-2013 10:28 AM

When sports miss entire seasons like the NHL and MLB it's easy to turn on them. I became a NHL fan for for a period, but after losing a season and lack of TV it's hard to follow. I'm sure it would be a different story had OKC or KC got a team though because for whatever reason I still care about the ****ing Royals.

BlackHelicopters 01-06-2013 10:35 AM

Hope hockey can bounce back.

Mr. Laz 01-06-2013 10:49 AM

Fehr is like a bubonic plague for any sport.

Bearcat 01-06-2013 11:02 AM

There was a rumor that the big market owners told Bettman a canceled season wasn't an option... hope that's true and hope they're getting just as tired of his bullshit as everyone else.

I've heard the suggestion of making NHL Center Ice or GameCenter free for the season... hope that happens, because after all this bullshit I'm not going to pay to watch the Avalanche. It's a damn shame, too, because it should be a good season.

I remember back in the 90s when FOX tried to make hockey popular by introducing the glowing puck.

It's a niche sport like MLS. It's never going to be as popular as the NFL or MLB but that's ok. They still have a loyal, passionate fanbase.

I don't want it to become as popular as the NFL, and I certainly don't want it managed like the NFL and one day see it become all about offense. I don't want expansion, I don't want a watered down league. Keep hockey on NBC/CBS sports and NHLN with few commercials during the game and no commercials during OT. And when I talk hockey, I don't want to talk about fantasy hockey.

HD TV's have eliminated the need of the glowing puck thingy, luckily.

After the abortion that was the Chiefs season, it's going to be liberating to watch a team in the Penguins who know WTF is going on. Can't wait for the start of the season. As much as I'd like to say I would be "sticking it to them" by locking the NHL out of my interest, I can't. Hockey is like crack to me. I need my fix.

I usually get into a $100 league on CBSSports. Have no clue what the outlook is on fantasy teams now with the lockout over. Don't want to put in $100 only to find out that 1 or 2 leagues are going

Nice! I always forget you're out in this neck of the woods. I've been to 3-4 Cutthroats games this year and, though they don't exactly sell the place out, it's a lot of fun for just over the cost of a movie. It's gonna be hard for me to shell out 5-6 times that amount of coin for the Avs when my TV at home is perfectly comfortable.
