I don't have much but it's all I need.

- Black Ovation Celebrity
- Yamaha Stomp Box
- Digitech looper that I loop shit through sometimes. Also allows for headphones. Downloadable drums, keyboards, what have you. I'm working with strings at the moment. Beautiful combination that I picked up via Sound City when Dave and that hot violin chick were playing together while they discussed 'feel'. Love that part and it inspired me.
- Crate 120w head. Headed out soon I think.
- 4x12 Jackson speaker box (rare) and is the loudest thing I've ever heard when turned up to 11. It's amazing.

I've had this setup for a long, long time. Built up to it actually.

My son played that same sax. I still remember the incredible high when he played an actual song for me. It was an amazing feeling hearing that come out of him. Thanks for that memory man.

A USA with a C-Star, or just a Selmer?

Or did you pony up for the Super Action 80?

No C-Star. But I know jack about sax. One of the guitarists for MMJ brings out the sax for a few songs. That's pretty cool IMO

At the time I bought it, the Super Action 80 was the best Tenor of any brand [made by Selmer in France], the USA was the same Tenor, made in . . . wait for it. . . the United States.

At that time [1987-1988], SA80s ran $4K and USA's ran $2500. I got mine as a display model for $1500. Nowadays, in good shape, the same saxes run 3500-4K for the USA and up to 6K for the SA80. Good investment. Treat her like a queen.

The C-Star is a great mouthpiece, runs around $150. I also have an Adjust-O-Tone, which can be wonky, but also can produce some great timbre. It has a lever that slides a piece in the barrel that changes the mouthpiece chamber for different tonality.

I'm on the road for work so I can't post pics, but the gear I've kept from my playing / touring days are - (I'm lefty FYI):
  • 1998 Gibson Les Paul - cherry sunburst & EMG 81/60,

  • 2013 Gibson Les Paul - chocolate stain & EMG 81/85

  • 2011 Jackson KE1T - black & EMG 81/60

  • 2010 Jackson Custom Super Strat - pearl white with tortoise pickguard & Seymour Duncan hot rails in the bridge & Mojotone '59 in the middle and neck

  • 2016 PRS McCarty - Jade burst & Seymour Duncan duncan distortion bridge / 59' Neck

  • 1998 Ibanez RG370DX - Sanded the finish down and applied true oil so a natural finish, Stock Ibanez infinity pickups but it's housed with a Fishman Triple Play for midi sounds.

  • 1989 Peavey Tracer - Nuclear Yellow & Dimarzio Super 3 in the bridge and Dimarzio 61 in the middle and neck position.

I don't have any amps anymore because I don't play out anymore, but I used Positive Grid Bias / JamUp on my iPad (PA direct) when I filled in for my buddy's band. Sounded great.

Yes! I got that librarian's chair at a thrift store for the blind on Troost whilst naugin' back in 1984. Career saver (lower back problems) back rest and wider seat than a drum throne.

I wore the hide off of it and a computer customer of mine had it re-covered for me as a favor back in 2004.

I regret passing up a chance to get a 295 a few years back. I was after a LP Custom at the time. You don't find those 295s for sale very often. Them that got 'em keep 'em.

I love the sound of those huge Gibson humbuckers on a bass.

One of the best sounding bass rigs I ever heard was a T-Bird through an Acoustic 360 rig back in the late 70s/early 80s. We had a little rock band with songs on the radio. We were so full of ourselves.

It appears they started selling 295's again.

S101 is Mexican owned, Chinese made brand that makes fairly decent Gibson and Fender knock-offs. A buddy gave that one to me.

I've been slowly getting back into playing guitar. My current set up is a Fender California Series Strat with Lollar pickups, and a Tone King Imperial.

And I've been wanting a nice Telecaster-style guitar in the worst way. I don't think I can resist for very long.

I got back into playing after a 25 year hiatus. Started playing in the church band about 6 years ago then joined a local jazz band. Forgot how much I love playing. Absolutely having a blast. Got to play jazz with both my kids. Still playing with mu daughter. Gonna miss playing with her when she goes off to college in a couple of years.

Cannonball tenor ~ 8 years old, 70s vintage Indiana by Martin tenor, 70 vintage Conn bari. I did not drag out the 1920s Conn New Wonder Series 1 alto.

Historical Note: The reason Fender produced black with a gold pick guard is that it "popped" on Black & White TV in the 50's, 60's and early 70's.

Just bought a '88 MIJ Strat for $200. It needs a ton of work but I'm an ex-carpenter so it's nothing I don't think I can handle. These run in the $600-$700 range for a lefty.

So stoked to get started on it, not sure what color I'll repaint it in - any ideas?

I was thinking candy apple red or a metallic black.

Is the body Ash or Alder?

If Alder, I'm partial to Seafoam Green or Sonic Blue. I just think those colors rock. If it's Ash, then Mary Kay.

I played a 1993 Custom Shop Fender Strat with a Mary Kay finish and Fat '54's and man, I regret not pulling the trigger to this day.

Here's one of my Strat's. It's a 1993 Custom Shop in a custom color (which didn't even have a name!). It's got a 10"-16" Compound Radius, Texas Special's, a Gotoh bridge and vintage tuners. I don't use it that much but it can be heard on shows like Pawn Stars, The Voice, Counting Cars and many more. It's a killer SRV sounding Strat.

It's an alder body and I definitely dig the idea of a the sonic blue with the cream / aged colored pickups. Just researched some pics and it looks pretty sharp.

I love the way the pearloid compliments the green on your Strat. Is that a metallic paint? I've always wanted a compound radius neck on a strat, must make ripping through the notes that much easier once you hit the 2nd octave.

Also, which amp is the logo-less one above the Ampeg? :D

Southpaw, eh? Is it strung southpaw? I worked with a couple of different southpaws that strung 'em righty, tuned to open E a full step down, turned 'em over and played 'em that way.

One of those guys is the best blues guitar player I ever worked with. Babe Martin in Columbia MO.

Cool, please post pics when it's completed!

I love the way the pearloid compliments the green on your Strat. Is that a metallic paint? I've always wanted a compound radius neck on a strat, must make ripping through the notes that much easier once you hit the 2nd octave.

It's a really cool guitar with an amazing Texas Strat tone. It can definitely be a shredder but I keep the action unusually high for me (I generally like the strings to nearly touch the frets - less than .75mm at the nut) because it forces me to "play harder", which brings out the sound of the guitar.

Also, which amp is the logo-less one above the Ampeg? :D

It's a Randall RM100 MTS series, which are unfortunately, no longer made. I have custom hand wired MTS series modules which perfectly emulate other amps, such as 60's, 70's and 80's Marshall's, Bogners, Fender's, Soldano's, Mesa/Boogies and more. Dave Friedman made a few really cool one off's for me, as did Trace at Voodoo Amps.

She's a beauty.

Active electronics? I am so old school I have always been leery of guitars that you have to put a battery in, but I am probably over thinking things.

I'm not one to tell someone what they should do, but....

You should come over and play some jazz with us. You could get in touch with your inner Getz. We play lots of Bossa Novas.

Gigolo/Ain't Got Nobody sounds better with sax.

Open invitation is open.

In the other pic, my band (minus drummer) setup for an acoustic show. There you can see my Fender acoustic and my Fender Mustang 3 amp on the right side.

And yes, my bass player has a Mesa Boogie setup. That thing is a beast. He could play Sprint Center with it.

7 strings? What, 6 ain't enough of a challenge?

Haven't read a bad review yet, or seen anyone selling theirs.

True confession time. I just got that Engelhardt a month ago. It's a used 2012 RT#66 M1. It's an exclusive run to a specific music store featuring maple top instead of spruce, solid maple back and sides and neck, adjustable bridge and Brazilian Jatoba fingerboard and tailpiece.

It sounds absolutely gorgeous, but I don't actually play it. I play with it. I got it to upgrade the sound of our little orchestra.

I don't know about Deuce bridges. I'm just happy the one on mine is adjustable. My bass player set it all up for me where it plays like buttah with no buzzes.

So stoked to get started on it, not sure what color I'll repaint it in - any ideas?

I was thinking candy apple red or a metallic black.

Dane is right. Seafoam Green or Sonic Blue. I might add Surf Green, as well. Fender's finest colors, IMO.

Here is my holy grail. I just out a K&K Pure Sound floating bridge pickup on it a couple weeks ago......I SAW GOD!!!!

When I play this guitar and my bass player is playing the upright, they get that airy woody tone I hear on those old 78 RPM jazz records. You can almost hear the pops and scratches.

1936 Slingerland Songster. Wide fretboard and big chunky neck like a telephone pole. 80 years does wonderful magic to excellent tone woods. Maple back and sides. Adirondack spruce top. I have owned this guitar for 30 years, but it was unplayable until I found a luthier in Memohis that fixed it up for me a couple years ago.

I currently reside in jazz chord nirvana.

Not very good pics, but this is the guitar that has been jilted by the Slingerland.

1991 Gibson ES 165 Herb Ellis. I got it used. It might have been a custom order due to the ebony fretboard and cherry red finish, but I don't know. It is early in the first year of the first year of production. These had a fatter neck profile and no Herb Ellis autograph decal on the headstock.

I love this guitar, but it feels like I'm playing a mandolin after playing the old Slingerland.

My advice would be to purchase another guitar, as you'll never be happy with the tone because it's made of pine.

If you don't want to purchase a Mexi or Road Worn Tele, go the "kit" route with Warmoth or Allparts. Warmoth offers super high quality woods and necks but it's far from cheap. Allparts and Mighty Mite are more affordable but it could be hit or miss on the body.

Also, if you desire lower action, make sure to get either a 10-16" compound radius neck or at least a straight 10" radius. That way, the strings will be level and far more playable. Keep in mind though when building you own, the necks usually require a level and dress.

As for P90's, the Lollar's are the best I've ever heard.

I just ****ed around for my guitar for 15 minutes. My chops suck. Instruments are alot of work for not alot of payoff.

One of those guys is the best blues guitar player I ever worked with. Babe Martin in Columbia MO.

Yep! I'm a southpaw through & through. I have them strung lefty. :)

I tried to learn right handed at first, but it just wasn't working for me. My first guitar was an old righty strat copy strung lefty though.
