This summer sale wasn't as good as last year's for me. I still got some good deals though. I picked up Defiance, Walking dead, torchlight 2, witcher 2 and civ 5: G&K.

Alan Wake
BG: EE
LA Noire
New Vegas
Skyrim
Walking Dead
Torchlight 2
XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Skyrim was I think the only thing over 5-6 bucks though.

Added Endless Space gold (been a while since I did a 4x space sim...) and Dishonored at the last minute.

Thank god they don't run it another week.

Frazod 07-22-2013 11:08 AM

Dishonored reminds me of the original Bioshock. Which is a good thing.

Pants 07-22-2013 09:01 PM

Here's my damage:

Alan Wake + DLC
Borderlands 2 + DLC
Bully: Scholarship Edition
Endless Space + DLC (extremely happy I got this)
Hotline Miami
Serious Sam 3: BFE
Sleeping Dogs
Tomb Raider
Worms Revolution

Decent haul, but I guess I forgot to grab Dishonored. Oh well.

I've been playing MMOs solo for 15 years. You don't have to do any of the raiding or PvP if you don't want to. There's always plenty to do without it, and the gameworlds are immense and always growing. Which is why, like Pants, the Bethesda games never seem to engage me all that much. It's like having the grind part of an MMO without anything else.

I definitely understand that viewpoint, but when I played MMOs (WoW mostly, with some TOR thrown in near the end), it got to the point that I didn't enjoy playing casually and being surrounded by people with better gear, higher PvP ranks, etc. I didn't enjoy myself unless I was better than almost everyone else, but the process of doing so took too much time and was endlessly stressful due to the ever-improving competition.

Now that I literally can't regularly devote parts of my day to raiding or organized PvP, the single-player RPGs like Skyrim allow me to get that sense of progression and fun without having to worry about falling behind because I have to work late or go would prefer to go on a date.

To each their own, though; if your social group supports it and your work is flexible, I think that MMOs can probably be reasonably integrated into a normal person's life.

I ended up buying:

Civ V: Gold Edition
Civ V: Brave New World (when it was mistakenly on sale for $20)
Castle Crashers (more fun than I thought it would be, need to find some people to play with)
Deus Ex: Human Revolution (which I can't play yet because of a broken thumb)

I also came pretty close to buying Witcher 2 when it was on sale, but ultimately decided that I wasn't going to buy two third person action games when I'm not really capable of playing any at all for another month or two. If I want it so badly later on, I can just pay the extra $5, no biggie.

Steam's Weekly Top Sellers - briefly
(hx) 05:44 PM EDT - Jul,28 2013 - Post a comment
Here are the ten top selling titles on Steam for the week as reported by Valve:

1.Shadowrun Returns
2.The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Legendary Edition
3.Civilization V: A Brave New World
4.Civilization V Gold Edition
5.BioShock Infinite
6.Borderlands 2
7.Kerbal Space Program
8.Dishonored
9.Prison Architect
10.Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

Who buys Prison Architect? That has to be a misprint....WTF is wrong with people?

Pretty hilarious, I bought all those games and haven't played anything but SWTOR.

Javabean 07-29-2013 05:07 PM

I almost bought Prison Architect. I had heard it was repulsively bad, and for $5 or whatever it was, I kind of wanted to experience the horror for myself.

I ended up getting Saints Row The Third for $7. What a great game. I'd played it when it came out on the X-Box, and it was just as much fun the second time. Can't wait for the fourth one next month.

I'm regretting not getting BioShock Infinite, the last Tomb Raider game, or Kerbel Space Program when they were under $10. I've been playing SWTOR again, and that's been fun, but I wish I'd bought more during the sale since I've heard great things about some of those games.

I got curious to see what Shadowrun returns is.

Looks a lot like the old SNES game... which was awesome. I'm now even more curious.

Kind of -- think of a B movie that instead of being corny and fun tries to tackle a complex subject with a higher moral purpose and fails miserably.

For example, in the tutorial, you have to build an execution chamber to kill a prisoner. While you're doing that, it shows you flashbacks of the prisoner killing his wife after catching her in bed with another man, and then it shows the priest consoling him and making you out to be the bad guy.

In a better game, this could be a really good story hook, but here they present this with a kind of slapstick humor instead of any kind of delicacy, and it's pretty jarring.

The comparison I've heard is it feels like playing Super Columbine Massacre RPG.

Ultimately, I decided I didn't want to spend any money on that. Hopefully, since it's still in alpha (or maybe beta now?), they fix that.

It's just shockingly morbid anyone would want to play it.

Missed this yesterday. Apparently all the issues between Atari and Beamdog have been resolved and they've moving forward with support on BG:EE as well as the development of BG2:EE. :thumb:

Bioshock Infinite for $30 is pretty good IMO.
