Pest Mock - 02/28

The route I'm going with this mock is not any huge FA signings (outside of our own players), building through the draft and letting the players that Reid and Dorsey drafted last year contribute and bring something to this team.

1. The Chiefs extend Alex Smith 5 years, $72m ($36m guaranteed) and S Eric Berry 6 years, $38m ($18m guaranteed).

2. The Chiefs restructure WR Dwayne Bowe and Tamba Hali's contracts.

4. The Chiefs sign OG Geoff Schwartz to a 3 year, $16m deal and S Hussain Abdullah to a 4 year, $10m deal.

5. The Chiefs place a 6th round tender on Jerrell Powe.

7. The Chiefs re-sign LS Thomas Gafford to a minimal deal.

8. The Chiefs let walk: WR Dexter McCluster, WR Kyle Williams, OT Brandon Albert, OG Jon Asamoah, DE Tyson Jackson, ILB Akeem Jordan, S Kendrick Lewis, S Quentin Demps, OLB Frank Zombo.

9. The Chiefs cut: CB Dunta Robinson

10. The Chiefs sign O'Brien Schofield (OLB - Seahawks) to a 2 year, $6m deal and Michael Johnson (OT - Falcons) to a 1 year, $1.5m deal.

Draft:

1.23 - Odell Beckham, WR, LSU - This offense needs dynamic playmakers and the lack of FA funds isn't going to allow that to happen by signing a player. Luckily this draft is full of WRs and TEs that can come in and help out this offense. Beckham is a perfect fit for Reid's offense. He runs crisp routes, has good hands and is a ****ing YAC monster. He has ST ability but I don't see that being utilized much outside of maybe his rookie season. Immediately starts in the slot....unless Avery or Jenkins falters in TC.

3.94 - Christian Jones, ILB, Florida State - It's sad to say that a LB group that includes Derrick Johnson, Justin Houston and Tamba Hali is lacking talent....but it has to be said. We are lacking a 3 down LB next to DJ and depth behind Hali/Houston. Schofield should be able to add that pass rushing depth while Jones provides 3 down ability opposite Johnson.

4.119 - Pierre Desir, CB, Lindenwood - Flowers is probably gone after this season due to his contract and his lack of a fit for this defense. Smith and Cooper are strong enough starters but this team needs to add depth and youth. Desir is tall and quick and could use a season to get up to NFL speed.

5.151 - A.C. Leonard, TE, Tennessee State - Leonard could go higher because of his athletic ability...but I think his off the field issues is going to keep him to around the 3rd day of the draft. He's the type of 3rd TE that you're looking for. A TE who has all the athletic ability in the world....but needs time to adjust to the NFL and learn the offense. Way more ability than McGrath.

6.177 - Marqueston Huff, CB/FS, Wyoming - I think that Reid and Dorsey view Commings as the starter at FS next year. He was drafted as a CB but he has more of a tweener. That happens to be a perfect fit for this defense. Huff played CB in college but I think he's viewed more as a FS in the NFL. He's not only good depth....but has the ability to learn and step in if Commings can't hack it or gets injured again.

6.183 - George Atkinson III, RB, Notre Dame - Typical homer pick. I usually use the last pick in the draft for that purpose. Last year, I always picked Theo Riddick. He would be an awesome fit for Reid's offense. This year it's Atkinson. Atkinson has the size/speed combo that can't be learned. He was under-utilized in ND's offense by Kelly and I think a West Coast offense is the perfect fit for him. He can immediately step in on STs by returning kicks.

Looking it over right now, you might want to specify letting McCluster walk.

I thought they did 7 in season. Could be wrong

They did....I'm just including it.

I really like all of your picks except Jones.

Why is everybody on this board obsessed with spending a high pick on an ILB? Least important position on the defense.

I actually went back and forth about signing Schofield and drafting Jones....and signing Pat Angerer and drafting Marcus Smith out of Louisville. I'd take either combination.

I like all of the picks. I'm very high on jones. i think he has a very high celing. I honestly don't understand why people consider him to be an ilb though as he plays most of his snaps with his hand in the dirt. when he did line up at the ilb position he looked very uncomfortable and it took him a very long time to diagnose plays. he also seemed to have a hard time getting through traffic and getting to the ball carrier.no way he can contribute as a 3 down ilb anytime soon in the nfl...but he did look amazing when his only task was to put his hand in the dirt and rush the passer. i'd love him as an olb.

Bleh, no thanks to Desir, I've had my fill of slow as molasses DBs. Plus, I'm not sure Desir makes it to the 4th, talk of some teams giving him a 1st-2nd round grade. As already stated, Jones is better on the edge than he is in the middle. He has a ton of potential though.

I'd be happy with either of those plus our #1 pick. Takes care of a few issues, however, I don' think there's a snowballs chance in hell that we sign a tackle for 1yr/1.5, re-sign Schwartz, let Asamoah and Albert go, and NOT draft a hybrid guard type in this draft, even if its in the back end of it.

Billy Turner, Joel Bitonio, Brandon Thomas

One of these guys will be a Chief if they are there in the 3rd-4th and we don't re-sign Schwartz.

Side note: Pest, where do you think TJ Jones will go?

Sandy Vagina 03-02-2014 12:25 PM

There is enough to like as is.. but I would rather see a S drafted in the 3rd instead of an ILB. Swapping the S and ILB spots in rd 3 and rd 6 would be more ideal. Instead of the TE in rd 5, maybe go with a versatile OL. McGrath showed enough to stick around as a good #3.

100% bullshit.

Finding a cover linebacker that can stay on the field is incredibly important. You don't let an offense dictate that way.

Bowman and Willis pretty much never leave the field and that's worked out pretty well for the 49ers.
