Overview

Gray is a well-rounded back who can block, run and catch the ball out of the backfield. He has great size and has been productive as a pass catcher throughout his career. He is highly elusive in the open field and understands the nuances of short-to-intermediate routes in the passing game. He is ideal for a screen-heavy team, as he has reliable hands and is patient when waiting for plays to develop. He likes to bounce the ball outside, sometimes too quickly, but he is effective when doing so. There are knocks on his game as an inside runner, which will keep him from getting drafted as an every-down back in the NFL. He does, however, bring value as a returner. Although not explosive, he is effective in this role. Look for him to be selected in the middle rounds.

Strengths

Gray is a big and athletic back who hits the hole hard and is elusive for a man of his size. He is one of those natural runners who understands when to weave and when to run with power. He has been highly productive and his style of running with power in his legs makes him a reliable short-yardage option early in his career.

Weaknesses

Gray is not a burner and can have slow feet at times. He usually picks his spots, but he can be hesitant in the backfield. Despite his size, he struggles as a pass protector at times. It takes Gray a few steps to reach full speed, and he won't be a threat to take it the distance at the next level.

I watched a lot of Ryan Tannehill’s play this past season, and one player kept grabbing my eye every time Tannehill dropped back to pass: Gray is a fun pass blocker to watch, as he seems to love punishing pass rushers despite his measley sub-200 lbs size. That kind of tenacity despite his size is endearing to me as a football fan. There’s no real place for him in Kansas City, but we’d be fools not to take him if the price were really, really reasonable. Gray has really good hands coming out of the backfield and he seems to have some of the jukes in the flat that other third-down specialists like Pead and Miller lack. Gray’s never going to be a feature back, nor is he going to be much more than a solid guy in rotation, but that’s more than can be said for most guys of his diminuitive size.

Go Chiefs.

I only deviated from Direckshun's recommendation one time in his consensus mock polls and that deviation was a vote for Cyrus Gray. I don't really know much about him, but I feel like I had a hand in convincing Scott Pioli to take him so I hope it works out.

I think this perfectly sets us up to trade Charles for Manning.

6 rounds in we finally made a decent pick, IMO.

This kids a good little player. If nothing else, the combination of him and Wylie should end the McCluster experiment.

Worst pick ever.

DJ's left nut 04-28-2012 02:19 PM

Oh - and once again - this only serves as even more evidence of how bad the McCluster pick was.

This is where you get small, quick, agile(ish) guys that have no chance to be any kind of every-down player.

McCluster would've been a fine pick in the 6th round - just like Gray.

Wont make the team.
