Good news everyone, we are going after the top kicker in the draft!

This is a little interesting. The Kansas City Chiefs by all accounts seem to like Cairo Santos, who had a pretty solid season in Kansas City. The Chiefs tendered him as a restricted free agent at the low level which is roughly a $1.8 million contract.
With that said, the Chiefs worked out the NFL Draft’s top kicker, according to draft expert Tony Pauline.
Some of the kicks White fielded were from the leg of Zane Gonzalez who, as we stated, will be the first kicker off the board and is projected as a middle-round pick.
I’m told Gonzalez looked good during pro day. He’s already been worked out privately by the Cleveland Browns, Minnesota Vikings and Kansas City Chiefs.
The big question: Is this due diligence because the Chiefs happened to be on campus for the pro day or are they in the market for a kicker?

BryanBusby 03-20-2017 10:01 AM

Well they are ****ed cap wise without drastic cutting in 2018, so affording Santos may not be viable.

thabear04 03-20-2017 10:08 AM

As long he not another Justin Medlock.

ModSocks 03-20-2017 10:11 AM

First a Santos and then a Gonzalez?

Trump better hurry and build that damn wall.

jd1020 03-20-2017 10:12 AM

To be fair, the kicker is probably the MVP of our "offensive" scoring.

This. As long as Alex is here we need the best kicker on the market.

Eleazar 03-20-2017 10:46 AM

This will come in handy, since Andy is fond of giving other teams field goals and blowing timeouts that could bring us closer-ranged field goal attempts.

Skyy God 03-20-2017 10:54 AM

Need to draft a punter as well.

Eleazar 03-20-2017 10:58 AM

Yes, punters are a key part of hidden TDs.

ptlyon 03-20-2017 11:23 AM

Guys, it's a process

What punter wouldnt love to come to KC? We have the best punter setter upper in the business.

RippedmyFlesh 03-20-2017 12:05 PM

If they could replace santos with a rookie I am in. I will always be thankful for the bank shot but its a kicker.

ct 03-20-2017 01:12 PM

as long as this is a wait and see if available late, or UDFA, then yes.

We have what, 11 picks?

I wouldn't mind if it's anything from round 4+.

Rasputin 03-20-2017 01:22 PM

They need to be looking at long snappers for our next viable pass rusher.

IIRC wasn't Medlock a surprise pick ahead of Mason Crosby (who most folks thought would be the first kicker off the board)?

Yes and add salt Crosby went on to kick game winning field goals to thrust Green Bay into the Super Bowl.

Oh **** you Herm Edwards

It's crazy to not have either cut or extended Colquitts deal already.

Just replacing Colquitt and Santos with draft picks saves KC almost 6m in cap space...and we could probably get the best kicker and punter in college football with draft picks that otherwise won't even make the roster.

Colquitt hasn't been the same lately and is getting paid big money.

Another guy on the team that isn't performing to his contract level.

TribalElder 03-20-2017 05:04 PM

Need a kicker who can punt too

Colquitt is a JAG at this point.

There's Hekker and everyone else.

It would certainly save the team quite a bit of money consider how the salaries of the position is increasing.

Deberg_1990 03-20-2017 06:05 PM

Medlock is a badass the CFL. The Chiefs gave up on him too soon. It's not like they were going anywhere in 2007-08

If he were that much of a badass he'd be kicking in the NFL still.

It is nirvana, arrowhead is a holy shrine of the punters powers.

mnchiefsguy 03-20-2017 08:11 PM

Santos is a mediocre kicker. Might as well get a better, cheaper one.

It won't work. Have you ever wondered why there aren't many out there that can do that (and none that do it really well)? The technique is vastly different and training yourself to do one kind of messes up ypur biomechanics and muscle memory for the other.

This is bullshit. The reason they don't do both is because they're lazy.

Santos had the 5th best FG percentage last year. BTW , Succop was #3

I think Loochy makes a good point. Alex doesnt run a lot anymore. Maybe he could punt

It would be a disaster if he got hurt mid game to.

Succop was also perfect in every split except 50+ where he only made 3/5. Santos, on the other hand, missed in every split except 50+ but he only took 2 attempts.

Santos has been worse than Succop every year since hes been in KC. If Succop was hated for being a bad kicker and Santos is actually worse, then....

Having Alice Smiff as our QB we better have a great kicker because Smiff can't get in the endzone....unless he runs it in.

There are some probable cap casualties that should put us back into fair territory (hopefully Smith at $17 mil in savings).

Fish 03-21-2017 08:25 PM

Why would you want to draft a kicker when you have Cairo "White Men Can't Jump" Santos??
