Listening to the new Killer Mike album, "R.A.P. Music."

Produced by El-P, which should be reason enough to give this a listen.

It's definitely going to be moving up toward my top of the year in rap.

Probably one of the albums I was most excited to hear this year. I've listened to it a couple of times now, but there's just SO much shit out there... I'll get back to the Beach House on my late summer nights kick I imagine.

It is. Title is "Bloom."

If you've never listened to their album, "Teen Dream," I can't recommend it highly enough. Was my late night soundtrack for about 6 months.

Thanks man. Added them both. I'm a big time shoegazer and this is right up my alley.

I've been singing his praises for a while, but if you like shoegaze, you should check out Youth Lagoon. Parts of it really remind me of Galaxie 500. Really slow building stuff that moves from sparse, folky lofi to sweeping, lush shoegaze.

I just never wanted to return to it. I never found myself wanting to listen to it. It's very solid; the the best Beastie Boys album since Hello Nasty.

But in a year that was FULL of forward-thinking hip-hop, That BB album felt like a relic of the past. I always wanted to instead listen to innovative, fresh albums by G-Side, Danny Brown, Doomtree, Sims, Cities Aviv, Mr. Mother****ing eXquire, ASAP Rocky, Kendrick Lamar, The Roots, Big KRIT, Cunninglynguists, & Das Racist.

This was pretty much my take as well. The Beastie Boys sounded as good as ever, but the album felt dated and not particularly exciting. That's not really a critique on the album itself, it's just that my musical listening style right now is to get caught up in the current milieu and the direction where things are heading, not to relive the past. I guess I'm saying I'm a trendy bastard.

And by the way: have you listened to the Killer Mike album yet?

I just texted a fellow rap fan friend about this. He's pretty turned off by misogynism and shit, so I was worried he wouldn't make it through the first track to listen to the whole thing. The production on this album is sick (El-P) and right up my alley with its sometime weirdness. The real thing I like, though, is that almost every song has a sort of "shift" in it where it goes to the next level both with the vocals and the production.

"Untitled" at about 3:31 is a great example of this:
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/T7wvg9VHIxg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

NewChief 05-17-2012 08:52 PM

And an extended Lord of the Flies allusion in "Willie Burke Sherwood" elevates the shit out of this album.

Giving the album a second listen right now. I like it and respect it. I don't know that I'll be reaching for it repeatedly for enjoyment, but I think it's interesting. Quite a bit of music I listen to these days falls into that category, though. Not a knock on those albums, more on the mood I'm in at any given time.

NewChief 05-25-2012 08:26 AM

J. Tilliman, former drummer for the Fleet Foxes, has a new project called Father John Misty. While this performance is kitsch as hell, the album is really solid for those who like songwriting filled with weird cultural allusions and surprising turns of phrase.

I got to see Otep on their House of Secrets tour in Memphis, TN back in 05 -- it was one of the best shows I've ever seen. They ****ing brought it that night. Craziest pit I've ever seen. I haven't listened to most of their recent stuff but I did pick up her poetry books a few years back -- some demented stuff.
****ing weird ass lady too, that Otep Shamaya.. We had backstage passes and went to visit with them after the show and she just locked herself in the bathroom screaming and crying the whole time.. I forget the bass players name "Evil something" - but he apologized for her behavior and said that the tour was tearing her apart.. We got his autograph and took a photo and that was that.

Yeah, I cruised youtube for a bit watching those guys. After seeing a couple of docs, she certainly plays the "tortured artist" role up. Maybe for her it's not a role anymore. Eh, whatever. Love her voice and a bunch of their songs.

I cannot get enough of this album. It is absolute perfection - best album of the year - nothing will touch this. The music, clean vocals, harsh vocals are simply perfect. Opeth who?

Bump. Because the old thread got bumped because someone wasn't paying attention.

I saw a bluegrass(?) band called The Devil Makes Three last Friday night at a Flogging Molly concert in St. Louis and they were really impressive (Flogging Molly was fantastic too, as expected). This is a video from the next afternoon at Bonnaroo.

I know that there are a few metalcore fans here (don't judge me) -- the new Memphis May Fire album is available for stream. It's pretty good if you dig their previous work (though there really isn't much southern style anymore).

Picked up a couple more splits.

Hummingbird of Death/Titanarum split 12" - I was in it for the 2 songs from HoD but the beauty of a split is you get to experience the other band.

Backslider/Chainsaw To The Face spilt 7" - In it for the Backslider tracks, textbook Powerviolence.

After that kind of build up I had to listen to this.
Uh, how do I put this? There must be different categories of best album of the year that nothing can touch with perfect vocals.

I suppose I should say progressive metal album of the year. I honestly meant to catch a few other posters with this band but if you can dig the music, that's great -- if not, sorry for misleading.

Awesome. Be sure and listen to original track I posted -- probably my favorite song on the album. The violinist is also the singer (clean vocals).
