Hypothetical: Would you trade Alex Smith for Peyton Manning?
In this hypothetical, assume that Peyton will come back for at least one more season.
Also assume that, by giving up each player, each team rids itself of the remaining contract and picks up the tab on the other as far as cap hits are concerned. The trade is straight up. Player for player. Contract for contract. I want to say Peyton's cap hit will be around $20 million next year and I think Alex is somewhere around $15 million (but keep in mind that we're basically locked into having Smith here for the next two seasons if he's still on the roster come opening day of 2015). Would you make that trade? |
No

Drunk or high or both?

Two years ago yes. Now no.
And that is in no way because I want Smith here. |
Yes. In a heartbeat.

Does Manning retire after the trade? If so, yes.
Free way to get out of Alex's terrible contract. Would we even get a comp pick? |
No - Smith is better.

Manning looked done.

Smith has more upside

Yes. Then we could get rid of Alex and Manning within one year.
Instead we're stuck with Alex for probably 2-3. |
Manning is done and he probably knows it but Elway will talk him into one more season of fail.
