What's your beef?

Gal Godot is a goddess. Is she a bad actress?

I actually only learned of her shortly before out hottest woman alive contest concluded. Dunno if she was in the mix, but she looks to me she should have won the whole enchilada.

She doesn't look like Wonder Woman with her sticky frame, and average ability as as an actress.

The film is directed by Patty Jenkins (Monster), and Gadot said having a woman behind the camera for the project was key. “It’s a story about a girl becoming a woman. I think only a woman, who has been a girl, can be able to tell the story in the right way,” she said.

The bigger problem

The Wonder Woman first look closes with Prince meeting Trevor’s secretary. “What is a secretary?” she asks. “I go where he tells me to go and I do what he tells me to do,” the woman responds. “Well where I’m from, that’s called slavery,”
Just plain dumb and clunky. Slavery isn't doing what someone else [say, a man, UGH!!] tells you to. That's employment. Slavery is not getting paid and not being able to leave.

Hopefully it's just tongue-in-cheek barbarian meets civilization humor and does not reflect the tone of the movie.

I'm excited about this...Gal has the wonder woman look esp the face. She has some tone but isn't buff or close...and I'm fine with it. Hoping this movie is good. Gina Carano could be a badass WW if she could remotely act imo

She's an Amazon from an island of women. And people are already bitching about female empowerment? If any movie is entitled to it, it's this one, not "Ghostbusters" or some other shit.

I wasn't happy with Gadot, although she's hot. Definitely a little thin for my tastes for the role. A better choice would've been Jaimie Alexander ("Thor", "Blindspot").

Not as thin as Gadot and we already know she looks kickass in armor ("Thor") AND she can kick ass ("Blindspot"). Just saying she would've been a better choice. And she can act better as well.

I'm not mad, it's just a clunky bit.

Up there with Storm's 'what happens to a toad who gets struck by lightning' line.

Heck, it might have even been palatable, and totally in keeping with your line of thinking if, instead of saying 'sounds like slavery to me' WW had said 'don't work too hard, you're not his slave.' Still not a great line, but better.

What bothered me about the production was that Warner's sought a female director, exclusively, for this film. I mean, why? This isn't a biography of Gloria Steinem or the like, it's freaking Wonder Woman, a comic book character.

That said, it looks really good, as far as trailers go.

Probably the same reason marvel wants a female director for captain marvel.

I think Nerdist takes up most of her time, but she does a podcast called Bizarre States (never heard it). She's a relatively new mom as well, so maybe that is why she isn't out there more? She certainly has the look and personality to be or do more, imnsho.

It's silly. I have absolutely zero problems with female directors but to purposely hire a female director because the film's feature star is female just seems odd to me.

Where's the mandate to hire a female to direct Aquaman or Planet Hulk? Or are female directors just relegated to female lead characters?

My interpretation is that it's a pr-/marketing-motivated decision. Look how we're empowering women in Hollywood by having women write/direct/produce female comic heroines. Women are by far a minority audience for any geek media, whether it's science fiction or comic-inspired, and I interpret these hires as targeting that audience.

At the end of the day there are major issues with gender imbalance in entertainment, so I don't really have an issue with it, so long as the women hired are qualified and do a good job. Maybe some success here will help open doors and help balance the scales down the road. To the point that gender isn't relevant to the discussion. Although at the same time there's the risk that box office and/or critical failure by either of these films (referring to ww and cm) will result in a step back toward the perception that female leads can't carry franchises and female directors can't deliver the goods. Because there's little doubt in my mind that they'll face tougher scrutiny than their male counterparts, whether we're talking writers, actresses or production staff.

Regardless, they can't afford for either of these movies to fail, not just for that reason, but because they're both such major characters in their respective comic universe.

I agree that it's probably part of the marketing ploy. But with all of the great female producers, directors, screenwriters and show runners working each and every day, it almost comes across as pandering and in some ways, condescending, as if only a female director can faithfully interpret Wonder Woman.

It just seems like an unnecessary ploy. But that's not to say that Patty Jenkins isn't talented or unworthy of the gig.

They needed a little humor in the B vs. S movie. They should have used something like this.

She's so ****in' sexy. Don't care at all if she can act or not. I'll see it just because she's eye candy.

One of the most beautiful women on the planet IMO.

And it's a Marvel popcorn flick. It ain't winning an Oscar for best picture/screenplay/actress etc. It's a kid's film based off a comic book I mean wtf else do you expect?

As long as it's not a Megan Fox Jennifer's Body or TMNT abomination, then I don't think there should be anything to worry about.

Now you're talking. Get the people who made Kingsman:The Secret Service to do up some Jayne Bond movies with Alexandra Daddario. Reboot the franchise with a beautiful sexy woman. **** it-worth a shot.

listopencil 08-08-2016 08:40 PM

That would actually be kind of fun. Do a Bond movie with the current guy where he's teamed up with a beautiful young woman. Make it like a buddy cop/secret spy combo. In the end it looks like he dies. The after credit scene is her walking up to a hotel desk, the clerk says 'Name?' and she says 'Bond. Jayne Bond." And then you see him on a sailboat in paradise near a beach smoking a cigar and drinking brandy. Start a run of female Bond movies and establish the system for turning over actors.

I want nothing more than to believe it is irrelevant and that a good story teller should be able to tell any story, but all we have to look at is female archetypes because most roles don't dare to step outside those definitions.

Monster, however, does get way outside the boundaries. If Wonder Woman is meant to fall outside of female norms, I see that as a great choice for a director. Is is because Patty Jenkins is a woman? There isn't enough evidence to answer that definitively, so I won't, but I look forward to a day when there is enough evidence to answer the question properly.
