2014 Bowe's best year?

Interesting article on Bowe in Arrowhead Pride (by MNChiefsFan) that looks at Bowe's "efficiency" thus far in 2014. It's a fairly lengthy article so I'll only post the thesis and leave you with a link:

"Somehow, very quietly, Bowe is starting to piece together his most efficient season as a pro.

Let me give you a couple of minutes to stop laughing and making fun of me.

(waits)

You good? Great. I suppose what got you laughing was the idea that Bowe is somehow better this season than he was in 2010 or 2011 (his most productive seasons by yards and touchdowns) is pretty ridiculous. Which is why I'm not here to argue as to whether Bowe is going to post better overall stats than he did those years.

This is where the word "efficiency" becomes important. Because so far this season, Bowe has been highly efficient with the targets he's received."

I agree.

And think and have been saying, he needs more targets. A shit load more.

jonzie04 10-29-2014 11:42 AM

Hes caught like 75 % of his targets. And he only caught 50 to 60 % in 10 and 11 very impressive.

ViperVisor 10-29-2014 11:44 AM

Back up to 50-some 1st downs would be nice.

Hootie 10-29-2014 11:45 AM

Bowe is grossly underrated on this board.

Our offense has been amazingly efficient this year sans the Dolphins game and, to a lesser extent, the 49ers game.

Starting to really like this team and really like the guy in charge (Dorsey). Reid still needs to hire me for clock management, though.

I saw him at the game last night and i was like Bowe kill it this year and he didn't even acknowledge me that dick

"Target" just means he was the intended receiver, right? It could have been a really shitty throw. So the better 'efficiency' could just be that the throws are better this year than in 2010, I'd assume.

Kind of seems like a worthless stat. If they could tell me that he's had X amount of catchable passes thrown to him and he's caught X many, then I guess that would be useful.

Chiefnj2 10-29-2014 11:50 AM

Efficiency should be higher when you aren't targeted on medium and deep balls.

Kind of what I was saying--surely more of his targets are on shorter throws which are going to be more accurately thrown and easier to catch.

This efficiency stat based on targets is pretty much worthless.

Even though I wish there was at least ONE (and more) catch over the shoulder for a run into the endzone, he has been very clutch on important third downs this season.

I don't think it's worthless. If he can come close to the same number of yards, or even surpass what he did in his break out years on fewer attempts, I think that is significant and possibly part of the reason for the offensive success overall. Allows those other attempts that went for incompletions previously to be distributed elsewhere.... Charles, Kelce, Sherman... and turn what was 0 yards in 2010 and 2011 to positive yards in 2014 without sacrificing total yardage for Bowe. I think that is a significant stat, no?

I think it is worthless because it is based on targets. If a pass is way over his head, that counts as a target that he didn't catch. He shouldn't be penalized for that. But that counts the same as a pass that hits him in the numbers.

Plus, he's with a different QB, OC, and HC than he was in 2010.
I'm pretty sure he's seeing less long downfield throws than he used to. Shorter target = more catchable pass = more efficient.

All in all, I think this stat is a more a reflection on the QB and system than it is the receiver.

I disagree 2010 was his best year.

Bowe is a good player but get paids like a top 5 WR. His production doesn't match his contract.

HoneyBadger 10-29-2014 12:23 PM

It has been about 30 regular season games since his last 100 yard performance. He is far from doing well, especially with his contract.

Next year he will be the 3rd highest paid wr.
