Chiefs "Plan to retain Crennel" per Adam Schefter

A bit ago on NFL countdown, Adam Schefter reported that the Chiefs "plan to retain Romeo Crennel"

Is that an official report of Crennel as HC? Has there been an official report?

It was just cryptic enough to make me unsure if he was saying he will be HC, or just that they would like to keep him on the staff.

ChiefMojo 01-07-2012 10:36 AM

Great move imo! I say that because the team and organization seem to be on the same page with RAC. Not only are they on th same page but looking over our head coaching options, RAC just makes to much sense.

Now the question is, who will be on the offensive staff? Namely the OC.

Really he is as good as any. For the most part it won't matter who the HC is unless they have a top QB. That's the state of the NFL these days.

notorious 01-07-2012 10:39 AM

Here we go.

BigCatDaddy 01-07-2012 10:40 AM

I like the hire for the simple fact that he said about Orton being the starter next year so that means he doesn't like Cassel.

BossChief 01-07-2012 10:40 AM

Later, Cassel.

Happy trails!

Brock 01-07-2012 10:40 AM

Well, not sure how I feel about it. I think it's pretty obvious that he can plan a defense pretty well, and the players obviously love him, but that isn't always a good thing.

Hammock Parties 01-07-2012 10:40 AM

Welp, there it is.

Pioli will be fired in two years.

Yeah, and Matt Cassel was here before Ricky Stanzi.

Doesn't mean he's the better option.

ShowtimeSBMVP 01-07-2012 10:41 AM

Crennel first job fire everyone of the offensive coaches.

RealSNR 01-07-2012 10:42 AM

Crennel might also listen to his players more. I wonder if Tamba brought him aside and politely said, "Fix the QB or you're ****ed, matey."

This is the right move. You need to retain some consistency. Blowing it all up and starting over every couple of years just gets you decades of mediocrity.

It's crucial, though, that Romeo hires some young promising assistants so that one can succeed him in a few years.

What if next year the Chiefs go 10-6 or 11-5 (very possible), and the year after go 9-7 or something and Romeo retires after a couple of seasons?

You couldn't say he failed, and Pioli would most likely stay for the next coach.

okcchief 01-07-2012 10:49 AM

I'm ok with this because none of the other options thrill me. If he succeeds bad ass. If he fails Pioli is gone. The key is Cassel not being the starting QB.

eazyb81 01-07-2012 10:50 AM

Good decision. Keep Orton, get everyone healthy, have a good draft, and we will be good to go for next year.

Sure-Oz 01-07-2012 10:52 AM

Not this shit again.

If Cassel's ass is out the door, this team's going to get better. Much better. We'd definitely be the most talented team in the division.

Carlota69 01-07-2012 10:59 AM

I dont mind this, better than hiring Del Rio or any other name out there.

Now who do we get for OC and DC?

Spags for DC? Del Rio? Gawd I hope not.

If Hue gets booted in OAK, I wouldnt mind him as OC. He would have a huge vendetta against his former team. Of course, there has to be other candidates, but who?

As long as he drafts a QB I'd be enamored with this decision.

CoMoChief 01-07-2012 11:01 AM

IMO there isn't anyone else out there that is a "must have" right now.

If the players are all for it, then most likely they'll play hard for him.

PLUS....hopefully this is the end of the Cassel era....or keep him as a backup, but that would be an expensive backup though.

No word on his status. It would be a very good hire for KC. Vendetta or not he is a solid OC~

BNew OC for sure. Muir is retiring apparently. And as the former DC who had his players on the field 75% of the time, I dont think Romeo is a huge fan of Cassels'...I hope anyways.

Several have asked about Philbin as OC. It possible, but as lateral move, NFL rules dictate GB would have to give permission. Seems unlikely

Exactly what I was thinking.

****.

This is a move that will sell tickets but it won't get us a super bowl. Guarantee the chiefs play very good football next year. Maybe decen football the year after. But by year three they're going to get sloppy.

There's a reason Romeo is popular.

When Marty and bellichick were in Cleveland you saw visible signs that the browns were better. When rac coached there, the team got worse and worse and worse. And it wasn't just talent. They played sloppy and uninspired.

And I think it's absolute bs tha there's nobody out there. I've said a gazillion times... YOU DON'T HAVE TO HIRE A PROVEN GURU. John harbaugh was largely a special teams coach.
