Sherlock

Holy shit. I love this idea. TIVO!!!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00t4pgh

Quote:

Co-created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, Sherlock stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the new Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as his loyal friend, Doctor John Watson. Rupert Graves plays Inspector Lestrade.
The iconic details from Conan Doyle's original books remain – they live at the same address of 221b Baker Street, have the same names and, somewhere out there, Moriarty is waiting for them.

Steven Moffat says: "Conan Doyle's stories were never about frock coats and gas light; they're about brilliant detection, dreadful villains and blood-curdling crimes – and frankly, to hell with the crinoline. Other detectives have cases, Sherlock Holmes has adventures, and that's what matters."
This three part series starts on 25 July.

I watched this last night. The first episode was amazing. The guy playing Holmes really pulls it off well.

That looks like something I would like. I watch quite a few of the BBC mystery series, and sometimes it's difficult to catch everything they're saying because of the sound quality and some of the dialect (like in Midsomer Murders). Unfortunately, most of the DVDs don't include captions, which help. This looks like you can understand it very well, though.

Muse's "The Uprising" is on its way to becoming the most overplayed song of this generation.

BTW, I should point out the soundtrack for the show is not nearly so modern. It has a good vibe. I dug it.

Steven Moffat can be pretty damn good. This sounds similar to his modern update of Jekyll a few years back that was excellent. The lead actor, James Nesbitt, was also great.

I saw a very short commercial for "upcoming programs" on Masterpeice Mystery on PBS (Sunday nights) quite a while ago and it included Sherlock. So, it should be on PBS sometime, but could be weeks or months away. For sure, it won't be shown here in the US until most or all of the episodes have shown in the UK.

Fish 07-30-2010 08:51 AM

Benedict Cumberbatch? That name sounds about as British as you can get...

Sherlock U.S. Air Date

Good news for our American cousins, the air date for BBC’s Sherlock in the US has finally been announced.

PBS will be screening the three-part mini series starting Sundays, October 24-November 7, 9:00 p.m. ET, so you will all be able to see what us Brits have all been squeeing about.

I finally caught this when PBS aired it. Fantastic series. Eagerly awaiting series 2.

lcarus 07-26-2013 11:44 AM

Anyone love this show? Can't wait for the 3rd series/season/whatever they call it. I've rewatched "The Reichenbach Fall" a couple times now because my friend and brother watched it, and I am starting to put some things together regarding the end.

Silock 07-26-2013 11:51 AM

It's amazing.

lcarus 07-26-2013 12:05 PM

That it is. I loved the first episode and last episode the best. After that, the first episode of season 2 with "the woman" was my next favorite. I didn't care as much for the second episodes in either season.

blaise 07-26-2013 12:05 PM

It's great.

Frazod 07-26-2013 12:28 PM

Love it. The last episode we watched was the first one with Moriarity in it. Drove me nuts that I couldn't place the guy until I checked IMDb and realized he was Hall from Band of Brothers.

Red Brooklyn 07-26-2013 08:03 PM

Great series. Can't wait for 3.

Mojo Jojo 07-26-2013 08:08 PM

So what do you figure is the explanation for Sherlock's survival from last season's finale? Hammond was grilling Cumberbatch about it on Top Gear a few weeks back.

RainMaker 08-02-2013 10:22 PM

I can hardly wait. I'm scared because the series follows very closely the books except for the updated environment. I like their take on Holmes and I'm torn between wanting the stories to stop where SAC Doyle left them, and the desire to see what the writers could do on their own. Only time will tell.

My question is, WTF kind of format are they doing? 3 episodes every 2 years? I don't understand.

All of the main people involved are busy doing other things, so I think they just fit in filming whenever they can.

And I guess it's not as uncommon in the UK to have weird season formats/lengths. They have avoided a lot of the "we're doing 20+ episodes a season until no one watches and we cancel it" thing that plagued US television for so long, and still does a bit.

Sadly, I agree. I think they painted themselves into a corner with the wedding storyline, and if this was a 1 off for a show with 13-15 episodes a season, it'd be okay, I guess.

But, a 3rd of the season, and likely to be the final one, this was a throwaway at best - with almost 0 apparent development of his supposed main villain of the season that we got a glimpse of after episode 1, Charles Augustus Magnussen .

Their teaser Many Happy Returns I thought was a great short to wet your appetite, and I've just not been engaged with wasting time having to reestablish Holmes and Watson's relationship or dealing with the change due to his marriage.

The last Ritchie Sherlock movie introduced that whole Mary / getting married scenario, and I would have been fine with episode 1, and then getting back to a case at hand (primary case of the episode) with an underlying plot setup for the big villain for episode 3. Mary would have been best left out or a minor point of the story on par with their widow landlord, Mrs. Hudson.

There was really very little callback for progression of events from 1 to 2 & leading into 3- unless they really have us duped and events at the wedding and within episode 2 actually are subtle clues and pieces important to episode 3?

What do I know, I'm just hoping that they go out with a bang and saved the best for last.

I could have sworn I'd mused on this here earlier [maybe in a different, buried, thread], but has there been a more odd-looking 'attractive' celebrity than BC.

I swear to God, every time they do a closeup of his face, I can only see either Simba's father in The Lion King, or Ron Perlman in Beauty and the Beast prosthetics. It's like there's this itch in the back of my mind insisting that he's not altogether human.

Right but the thread has been up since 2010. I know it's a UK/BBC show, but it's pretty highly regarded internationally and it popped up for me on Netflix all the time before I started watching it, and I never watch British shows or even crime dramas. As far as Game of Thrones, I haven't sat down to watch it yet. I'm sure it's great but I just haven't had the time between work, school, a video game here and there, the few TV shows and movies that I already spend time watching, and of course watching the Chiefs rip my soul out through my rectum.

KcMizzou 01-07-2014 10:30 PM

If anyone's interested, a while back PBS aired a program called 'How Sherlock Changed the World.' It's somewhat of a promo for this show while also talking about the books' historical significance.

Also, this week PBS American Experience's ep was 'The Poisoner's Handbook' which talked about investigating mysterious deaths in our history. Really enjoyed it. It's available for online viewing.

Anyong Bluth 01-13-2014 12:44 PM

Moffat has come out and said he's already got season 4 and 5 planned out and the cast, producers, and writers are all on board with getting under way with principle shooting in the near future.

He and Gatiss were spitballing ideas and had a stroke of genius or inspiration. Both of them basically laid out the major details for 4 and 5, and think what they have in mind for the next 2 seasons is by far better than anything seen to date in the Sherlock series.

That's a rather bold statement!

I have no clue why I never put 2 and 2 together that the other main writer for the show also plays Mycroft on it?

Anyong Bluth 01-13-2014 07:21 PM
