Hardest Video Games All Time
I have been going on a nostalgia tour of NES games played right on the console. No save states, no cheats, just hard-core, kick you in the balls gaming.
What are the games that caused you to swing the controller by the wire like a medieval mace, bringing it down upon the floor reducing it to an explosion of plastic shrapnel? Let us know the game, what parts of the game were brutal, and the notable reactions the impossible scenarios summoned from deep within. |
Ninja Gaiden

First up for me is Castlevania III.
I blew through the first half of this game without dying. Not bad for a 25 year break. When I got to the skeleton dragon/snake thing it fisted me over and over and over. I got it down to the final piece. One ****ing hit left, and it took me down. Unlike my childhood, I just smirked and gently placed my mint NES Advantage on the floor and shrugged my shoulders. Well played, NES. By taking me out early, you saved my dignity and controller from certain annihilation when I met with Dracula. I will be back, but with a nostalgic smile instead of blazing anger. When I was a kid, I could NEVER beat Dracula. Hell, I didn't know there were 3 forms until the internet was created and graced us with porn and game video. The flame pillar attack was easily avoidable until the middle attack does it's thing. Those assholes on youtube make it look easy. **** you. |

I never got mad, though. When it beats you, it's not cheap. You have to gather yourself and fight through the entire level again. |
Also shout out to Street Fighter 2010
Don't think many people know about this game. It's kinda like Contra/Spiderman/Mega Man all rolled into one. It's a weird, flawed game, but fun nonetheless. Oh, and it's hard. Reallllllyyyyyyy hard. |
AVGN cracked me up when he reviewed SF2010.
That final level looks like it is a bitch. Countdown timer and all! |

years and years ago, when we would go to the video store and "rent" video games for the weekend, there was a game called the guardian legend. the first level is you as a starship fighting through a moving galaga-asteroids type theme.
i couldn't get through it. just. could. not. returned the game, and didn't give it much thought. 6 months pass, and for some odd reason, i rent it again. i beat the "hardest opening level ever", and the spaceship is transformed into a robotic-suit guy, and the game turns into a legend of zelda type game. it was fantastic! acquiring weapons, shields, and the lot. i cant quite remember beating the game, but there were some tough boss battles. but man, that opening sequence, that was a bitch! |
There are a couple games that people thought were hard, but I managed to beat them regularly.
Contra and Blaster Master. I think Contra was beatable due to practicing with 30 lives before making runs with 3, but Blaster Master was just easier for me. |
Rygar.

Rygar, Battletoads, TMNT1, Ninja Gaiden
|
Why was Rygar hard?
I am not a great gamer by any means, but I beat that game without much fuss. Attack and Assail the final guy, but you have to do it slowly or it won't register the hits. Of course, I played that game a shitload. I even discovered the hidden world on the final level because I screwed around so much. |

Ghosts N Goblins from NES was extremely difficult.
