That's really awesome. Hope you keep it up. I actually just started smoking a few weeks ago.

Bowser 11-30-2012 01:09 PM

Glad I never took up the habit. It's got to be a drain on the finances to be a smoker these days. 50+ bucks a carton? Wow.

Good job, DPS. Stay strong.

BigMeatballDave 11-30-2012 01:11 PM

Well done!

I quit back in 96. Cold turkey. I remember when I first quit, I took a drag off a cig about a week later and it tasted like ass. That was it.

BigMeatballDave 11-30-2012 01:12 PM

Price alone would make me quit.

When I smoked, I was only paying $16/carton.

Any particular brand of patch? I want to quit as soon as the Mayans are proven wrong.

That's for premium brands. You can get off brands for 20-25 bucks. Still too much and no I don't buy cartons.

Spokane Chief Fan 11-30-2012 03:19 PM

Prescription. I only needed half. The best thing about it was you picked your day to quit and you start taking it one week before that date. That way the drug has a chance to get built up. And no I did not have any side effects.

Chief Roundup 11-30-2012 03:20 PM

The wal mart brand works just as good as nicoderm. You can also order free patches at 1-800-quit now.

I used Chantix the last time I quit, and had I been quitting for me instead of a woman, I'd be a non-smoker with more clean time. Chantix is expensive as ****, but it does work extrememly well.

Congrats man! I'm also quitting after almost 9 years of almost a pack a day.

Same method as you, the patches, 21 mg for the 1st 6 weeks, and some gum.

Im on Day 17 and it does get easier...

TribalElder 11-30-2012 10:51 PM

I'm on day 656 and refuse to go back. The shit smells filthy to me now.

Be careful with chantrix I heard people get hooked on that and they just trade one addiction for another.

My winning formula for quitting smoking after 10 years+ pack a day habit.
I switched to chew for a while. Skoal straight long cut. This is how I fed the physical craving for nicotine. After a while I slowly cut back on the chewing where I got down to 1 dip a day in the evening. Eventually I started going a few days between dips and then quit chewing. I didn't smoke in the house so that was easy enough. There are a few trigger moments such as after a meal, in the car, or after an xxx encounter with the woman. Behavior modification is the name of the game. Recognize the urge and knowingly disregard it. Eventually it becomes second nature.

I made sure to get drunk a few times at home to train for when I hit the smoke filled bar. I always ****ed up before when I was drunk. I graduated when I got totally shitfaced at the bar and didn't bum a smoke from anyone. Now the shit seems so filthy I can't believe I smoked as long as I did.

TL;DR

Congrats, keep going, **** cigs

Guys It's not too late to start smoking pot! It's a tremendous habit.

Pants 11-30-2012 11:07 PM

Quit cold turkey a year and 7 months ago. No patches or any of that shit. I don't think my pack-a-day habit was about nicotine, to be honest with you. I just really, really enjoyed smoking a cigarette. It always gave me a good way to break from whatever I was doing, collect my thoughts or have an awesome conversation. It also gave me a false sense of stress relief. I still miss it to this day but it's just the weakest echoes of weakness at this point in time.

I still smoke a cigar every last weekend of the warm weather months, though.

Rugby Thompson 12-01-2012 12:35 AM

Skoal is disgusting and honestly, smoking is disgusting in general. If you really need too, get tobacco and roll it yourself in a RAW hemp paper or pre rolled cone, much better. I've quit for years and the smell and sight of one alone makes me feel sick, I only smoke the finest kush now in a hemp paper or glass.

This used to be my master.

The best solution I found was reducing the situations I was chewing in, replaced them with gum, and honsetly eating healthier. I always wanted to chew/smoke when I got pretty drunk.

Still get drunk but I think the other steps I took have helped reduce that desire IMO.

Sweet Daddy Hate 12-02-2012 04:50 PM

I quit a fairly strong coke habit cold turkey about 20 years ago. It was easier to quit then smoking.

Thinking of trying to quit again next year.

Rugby Thompson 12-07-2012 05:14 PM

Quitting weed is harder then quitting cigarettes especially if the weed is absolute kush.

smittysbar 12-07-2012 05:45 PM

I have smoked at least a pack a day for over 20 years. I had gotten bad as of late. 2-3 packs a day, even more if I was drinking. I would get up every hour to hour and a half to smoke at night. I have tried just about everything throughout the years. A person has to be ready themselves to quit. I have been trying to kick it again for a while now. I am using the patch (equate brand) seems to work just as good as the more expensive ones, make sure to get the clear ones, the other one seems to fall off before the day is through. I also us the BLU electric cig when I have a bad craving. I do good some days and then fall off the wagon for a day or two, but I keep climbing back on. When I drink it goes out the window every time. I am sleeping throughout the night now, and when I screw up I have never went over a pack. It is definitely tough as shit, but unbelievable how much better it makes you feel. I put on about 20 lbs since trying to stop and now trying to get that off, but don't have the munchies anymore like I did at first.

of course it works just as well. The active ingredients are the same. That goes for every OTC drug as well.

But it is hard quitting. It ties into almost everything I do. These habits become really hard to break.

As someone who used to do it quite frequently and rarely does it anymore, my best advice would be to use pouches. Easier on teh gums and no cleanup required.

However, it is a nasty habit that should be avoided.

JD10367 12-08-2012 02:32 AM

Good to hear you stopped smoking. But you still flame a little. :dom:

KcMizzou 12-08-2012 02:46 AM

If it weren't for drinking, I'd never smoke.

Seriously, in the last decade, I've taken one smoke break at work.

But if I've got a beer in one hand, I need a smoke in the other.
