New releases I'm on this week:

On his new album Tree of Forgiveness , John Prine shows that despite not releasing new music in 13 years and now being 71 years of age, he is still a national treasure. Just a fantastic album of excellent songwriting.

After reading Reaper's posts about it for a long time, I finally decided to delve into the world of modern metal. Now, I'm still not a metal head by any means, but a few bands have stuck with me. One of those is Panopticon. I've loved pretty much every album he's released (it's a one man studio project, and he plays all instruments). The latest release, The Scars of Man on the Once Nameless Wilderness, is no exception. There's just something about the folk music and natural elements that are woven throughout this music that makes it really beautiful and emotional. Yes, beautiful and emotional, metal.

I know people shit on rap these days, and there is a lot to shit on. Between mumble rap and soundcloud rap, the genre has some pretty wack shit happening. That being said, there are some great, great artists out there currently. One of them is Chicago's Saba. His new album CARE FOR ME, details his relationship with his uncle/friend/mentor who was tragically stabbed and killed on a Chicago subway over a silly altercation over a coat. The album is equal parts sad, angry, and joyful and well worth listening to.

Finally, the new Cardi B isn't crappy. It's actually pretty damned good.

Frosty 04-14-2018 05:43 PM

Actually, as I type this, I've been capturing a bunch of brother's old records for him and converting them to MP3, so I've actually been "spinning" tunes. So far I've done two Book Of Love albums, Moev, Die Juz, Xmal Deutschland, a Ministry 12", and a band called Moral Crux, which was a not very good punk band from Ephrata, WA.

Right now, I'm doing a Man Or Astroman? album. It's a pretty cool purple vinyl.

KCrockaholic 04-14-2018 05:45 PM

All my metal like usual.

Lately a lot of Miss May I, Like Moths to Flames, Wage War, Polaris, Killswitch Engage

Some major American act needs to sign them up as openers for a US run, that was outstanding... I'm sincerely always amazed at just how much Japan took to American culture

Actually 5. That is their only song that is completely in English but they are very talented. They have played two shows in America. One in Seattle and one in San Francisco. Plus a show in Mexico. They have been to Europe a time or two. Mostly they play around Tokyo. They aren't actually that big yet with their biggest show that they headlined drawing about 4,000 people.

Thats a damn shame, because if those gals can deliver several dozen more scorchers like that in front of US audiences this summer... they're gonna blow the **** up

In all sincerity I'm not the most up to date guy on national hard rock acts these days... but I sure as hell love Greta Van Fleet, they're getting back to the roots bless their hearts

Its no wonder they're opening for GNR over in Europe for a few gigs

I do all mine to 24/96 WAV, convert those to level 8 FLAC via TLH and make mp3s out of the FLACs if a friend wants mp3...but you may as well go all in if your already making your own needledrops ;)

Most of what I'm currently listening to revolves around some of the spring/summer concert shows I'm interested in.

The new Harm's Whey Way (metallic hardcore) is growing on me.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlgbEZS1jys

Hoods (hardcore) are playing here in 2 weeks. Incredibly excited.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79alWZqMy10

Power Trip (crossover/thrash) in May.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPwPwSQE9bs

REZN is an up and coming stoner band from Chicago with a unique enough take on a style that's beyond oversaturated with shit. They're on Bongripper's new album release show in July. Check em out.

In relation to the $12-20 new vinyl I typically buy, it’s a bit expensive. Especially since there’s no middle man and was mastered at a buddy’s hobby studio. It’s completely worth it though.

Back in the day, I would spend a whole day at Peach's records. Just listening to anything and everything. Compared to today going through youtube, takes all of the feeling out of the music. Letting your imagination interpret the music any way you feel. IMO

I grew up in KC, spent a lot time there too. In the early 80's Peach's was the biggest for vinyl. It wasn't until '85 or '86 they started selling cassettes, I still keep all my old stuff in the Peach's wooden creates.

How is that Back to Black pressing? Any info in the deadwax about where it was pressed? Been mulling over pulling the trigger.

I hope Princess Prissy Pants has been well...

It's incredible. Well worth the $20-30. I don't remember the price point but I'm pretty sure I bought it from Amoeba and not Amazon so it was more likely the higher one. I'll take a look at the deadwax next time I pull it out if the bin.

Polly Prissy Pants? Lol. I think she died a few season back.

Vinyl for B2B is $15+change shipped from WalMart.com.

Hate WalMart, but...at that price, may have to pull the trigger...

P1; it's OK but the issue with the p1-p3 models is that they often run a bit fast.

I'd get the pro-ject Debut Carbon or Music Hall 2.3 (they're the same thing) - way better for the same basic price point...and the ability to upgrade specific parts (like stylus/cartridge, platter, speed box) make it a better long term investment.

Oh, I was a licensed Rega dealer for 3 years, and I have a Music Hall 2.2 w/Ortofon 2m Blue + acrylic platter + speed box...and it ROCKS.

Probably should be on the shame list because it is an idol group, though completely independent, and all the sleaze that may go with that. Seriously catchy Darkwave and a gambit of metal styles though.

Went with digital since I wasn't going to pay the import prices.

Necronomidol - Deathless - Digital
Necronomidol - Dawnslayer - Digital

Akira Yamaoka is the dude who made all the music for the Silent Hill games.

Want to but not often enough I sit in front of my system to seriously listen. Also worried that vinyl would cascaded into me spending a lot to upgrading my already decent setup.

Came home to see the Sleep 10k pressing of The Sciences waiting for me in the mail that I ordered from Third Man. I'll use that one to play while I take pics of my 1k press to post on social media. Just kidding, sort of.

I also have an old timer in my family sending me their collection of 45's in batches. Yesterday I got a bunch of Capitol box sets and Decca Records releases from the 1940-50's. Mostly mood/background music like Jackie Gleason - Music For PIIHB and Harry Owens - Songs Of Hawaii. Pretty excited to go through them this weekend.

I was back in KC last weekend and went to an impromptu Pamper the Madman show. They weren't my thing around KC at the time (mid-90's), but gat damn if they don't set it off live. They had that right mix of funk and 90s rock and Theresa is easily in the top 10 frontmen/women I've ever seen live. She's incredible, to this day. The youtube vids don't come close to doing them justice.

Nice!

I wound up with a sweet Patsy Cline repress from AP, it sounds AMAZING!
