In a statement to The Associated Press, Brian Bumbery says Cornell died Wednesday night in Detroit.

Bumbery called the death "sudden and unexpected" and said his wife and family were shocked by it. The statement said the family would be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause and asked for privacy.

Cornell was still a working musician until very recently, and performed a show hours before he died. He was last pictured by the press was a little over a month ago, at a screening of The Promise in New York with his two daughters.

Shitty. He also created Temple of the Dog which had a couple great songs(Hunger Strike, Say Hello to Heaven). Great musician.

Just saw this news on Yahoo. I'm shocked. Heard two great Soundgarden songs tonight after work on Pandora. Another great talent cuts out early, completely shocked.

Holy shit. Just got to see Soundgarden at the Beale Street Music Festival a couple weekends ago. How crazy. They were still amazing. Sad to see. RIP
