Fishing

Summer approaches and it's getting closer to the time to get out there and do a little fishing. In the past I was confined to mostly shore fishing. This year however, I decided it was finally time to get a boat. I was going to go with something relatively cheap, in the 2-4k range. I ended up finding this guy and decided to pick it up. Definitely spent more than I wa looking to but honestly, I think it's worth it. Let's me take the kids out tubing, etc. and have some fun with them while they're still at home.

I'm pretty new to boat fishing, my dad had a small little thing when I was younger but it was puny, no trolling motor, etc. and we only took it out a couple times a year because we only had a couple dinky no wake lakes close to us and shore fishing always filled the limit pretty easy.

So, what are your plans CP? Boat fishing, shore fishing? What are your tips and tricks? Let's hear it.

My boss just caught some crazy fish in an offshoot river from that big bass lake in Southern Florida - I'll post pics to stimulate excitement for the thread.

Was hoping to head to the lake today. Son is out of school for teachers in-service. But... my grandson needed someone to watch him till noon.

Yeah - I'd never seen a Perch that size.

We still have ice and snow up here in ND so it'll be a few weeks yet for me.

I live on a small lake in Northeast Iowa. It's not a great lake for fishing, but it does hold Bass. I am very selective of when I fish. I usually go out half hour before dark and in a kayak, only tossing top water patterns with my fly rod. In fact I never fish with anything but fly rods.
Do a ton of Trout Fishing in Northeast Iowa and usually take two trips out west in Wyoming or Idaho for Trout.

Zara Spook?

Edit: Too heavy for Fly rods I'd imagine.

Why Not? 03-30-2018 09:15 AM

Hoping to take my boys today since we're in Charleston, but the weather is not cooperating thus far.

LMAO yeah a zara spook doesn't work on a fly rod. He's probably talking some kind of deer hair popper or dahlberg diver.

No, although I am familiar.

I tie my own flies and Frog Patterns with Bass are killers.
I copy this pattern using Deer Hair

Yeah I'm not much of a fisherman - as you can tell - but Dad is and he swears by that ZS in May or so.

Oh, they're great in the shallows during prespawn or early morning summer if you know how to work them - they have no "built in" action.

It was just funny trying to imagine casting one of those giant double treble hooked things with a fly rod.

A bit off topic but here's a video of the Yellowstone ice breaking up that my buddy's brother took. Not imbed friendly. He has a bunch of follow-up ones on facebook at well. Pretty much needs to get out of there, if you watch the vid, you'll see why. Rivers can be pretty damn dangerous when the ice is breaking up.
