Dead Space 3

Hits Tuesday. Loved 1 and 2 both. Can't believe we don't have a thread on this already, I know I'm not the only one that did.

I'll add some video and stuff later on, and I'm sure there'll be some interesting talk about the co-op mode and the crazy number of available microtransactions at launch, but this initial post is just about the pre-order from Amazon. They have a deal with EA where you get $20 in credit when you pre-order certain EA games. DS3 is included in that deal. Link for PC is http://www.amazon.com/Dead-Space-3-Pc/dp/B0050SWTS8

Believe that's for a boxed-copy (the deal is also valid for PS3 and 360), but I can wait a couple of extra days for some Amazon credit (assuming you can't just download it through origin once you get your codes from Amazon).

Okay, the story so far:

I played the demo a few days ago -- Loved it. It is a big more "shootbang" but I don't mind it. Atmosphere is still there.
Coop seemed really fun. I'll be buying it Day 1.

I started up a new game of Dead Space 2 last Sunday. I'm on Chapter 7 now and loving every minute of it.

The sound design in these games is unmatched.

I'm going to do the same, although starting on DS1 and playing them both, just to get myself back into that universe.

And here's the mostly-crappy bizarre phil collins inspired trailer I saw during The Following on Monday that made me go "oh shit" with the realization that a game I want is out in a week:

I'm working my way through DS2 at the moment so I'll be able to start DS3 when it arrives next month.

Got about 25 minutes into 2, and uninstalled. Nothing about the gameplay was bad as I saw it, but I could.not.look at it. The motion sway was sickening to me. I'm a pretty avid gamer, and only this and zombie driver made me have motion sickness. Couldn't do it. Kinda sucks too cause I was amped up to be scared~

Huh? There is zero sway unless you're in a zero gravity area...

hometeam 01-31-2013 07:29 PM

well.. the way I remember it was sway throughout the first part of the game, no settings could change it, so I uninstalled.

Just got my copy, haven't loaded it yet. Some news today: they've announced that the first story DLC, entitled "Awakening" will be available in March for $10, and will be available on Origin, meaning that it looks like, for the first time in the series, story DLC will be available on the PC.

Review-wise, game informer loved it:
Quote:

Visceral laid the foundation for a terrific horror series with the first Dead Space. The clean, HUD-less presentation, dismemberment-focused gunplay, and expertly crafted derelicts have made each successive entry feel ahead of its time. Dead Space 3 evolves the winning formula into a title not only befitting of the fantastic series, but also one of the best games of this generation.
They also make particular note of the new resource-gathering and crafting systems:
Quote:

Unlike the first two games, players gather resources like tungsten and scrap metal instead of money. These materials are used to make extra ammo, upgrade your suit, craft weapons, and more. Scavenging much-needed resources is just as satisfying as finding that critical health pack when things get rough. Even better, you acquire little robots that troll areas for goodies and automatically return to your workbench, so every trip to a bench is like Christmas. Sorting through all your items to see what new weapons you can craft or tweak is a worthwhile endeavor that gives you a greater sense of ownership over your equipment.

Previous Dead Space games had players purchase new weapons, but Dead Space 3 gives you one gun to start with and sets you loose with the best weapon-crafting system I’ve ever encountered.
Gamespot gave it an 8.0:
Quote:

From its terrific weapon crafting system to its deep well of side content, Dead Space 3 is a massive game rich with options and personalization. Whether you choose to approach it with a friend or by your lonesome, using a plasma cutter or an acid grenade launcher, Dead Space 3 makes fighting for survival a delight.

More reviews:

IGN isn't quite so glowing:
Quote:

The Verdict

The combat system and the world Visceral has crafted in Dead Space 3 is so expertly built and well-wrought, I found myself consciously overlooking my main criticisms, because I love playing it and spending time with it. This is an important distinction to make: loving a game while being fully aware of its faults. Dead Space 3, when played the way I've been playing it, on New Game+, is an engrossing and satisfying experience. But it requires ignoring the bad story and the numbing to-do lists. It then becomes all about building up the most powerful, best outfitted Isaac you can imagine. It’s here and here alone that Dead Space 3 succeeds, mostly in spite of itself.
Joystiq gives it 4.5 stars and says:
Quote:

Dead Space 3 is an exciting, shocking and mammoth adventure through the ghostly, unvarnished segments of space – and you do, thankfully, get to spend some more time flying. There aren't many games that can match the lonely, liberating movements of Isaac Clarke in nullified gravity, or his vengeful, squishy stomps of victory.

Cinemablend has a round-up of reviews here. As the title says, they range from "Joyless Slog" to "Magnum Opus", from losing what made Dead Space special to the being the best in the series to date.

Looking forward to seeing for myself...
