Beatles Open the Vaults For 50th Anniversary of 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' Album

The Beatles are going all out to pay tribute to the June 1 50th anniversary of the release of their Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album. They today announced several special reissue packages of CD and vinyl versions coming May 26 featuring new audio mixes of the album and a special super deluxe six-disc set full of unreleased outtakes. Fans will be able to choose from four separate offerings, including a newly remixed single disc of the original album, a two-LP vinyl set with the album and a second disc of collected outtakes in the same order as the album and a two-disc CD version with a second disc of complete early takes from the album in the same sequence plus outtakes of “Penny Lane” and “Strawberry Fields Forever,” the two-sided single released before the album.

But the real eye opener is the six-CD deluxe set that will be housed in a box with lenticular artwork of the original cover. This will include the original remixed album, two discs of outtakes in chronological order of their first recording date and a CD of the original mono mixes of the album and the “Penny Lane” and “Strawberry Field Forever” single and unreleased early mono mixes of “She's Leaving Home,” “A Day in the Life” and “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” (the latter recently rediscovered during an archive search). It will be topped off with DVD and Blu-ray discs with 5.1 audio and high resolution mixes of the album and the “Penny Lane” and “Strawberry Fields Forever” single, a newly restored version of the 1994 TV special The Making of Sgt. Pepper and promotional films for “A Day in the Life,” “Strawberry Fields Forever” and “Penny Lane.” Also included is a 144-page hardcover book that goes through the album song-by-song.

Interesting. I would have a hard time being a music critic. So much depends on my mood, and I know that there are huge sections of music that I will either embrace or throw away on any given day.

While he's critiquing, the artist wrote, arranged, engineered and produced a work of art. And he is up there, rocking it, getting laid ALL THE TIME, and receiving the adulation of millions.

The only thing more useless than writing about eating is writing about listening.

I mean, some can do a decent job every once in a while of creating a mental picture for the reader, and at least restaurant reviewing can be enhanced with photos, but unless you have a long intimate relationship with a reviewer's tastes, their reviews are meaningless. Literally meaningless. I don't know how many music reviews I've read out of boredom when it's all of a particular newspaper I haven't read in the days before WiFi, but no matter how much effort I put into deeply appreciating the effort of the reviewer, and no matter how skilled and valiant that effort, at the end I couldn't tell you a ****ING THING about the music they were describing if I hadn't heard it already.

OTOH, NPR's All Songs Considered is a trusty companion.

Only thing I read on music reviews is the conclusion and rarely even that. Will say they have a lot of use for me for finding new music when the rating is very high.

I went 1:1 with one once. Pompous piece of shit. I asked him where he gets off critiquing something he can't even do, or simply failed at. He says some bullshit like it's guys like him that keep music "real". WTF?!!

The artist, ARTISTS, and fans determine that. "I" determine that. For ****ing ME.
