I appreciate the offer, but I don't really like to be out after dark.

Holladay 06-08-2017 09:55 AM

I am thinking along the same lines. Renting out the house/barn. Still ruminating on it thou. I've heard that people come from all over the world.

bevischief 06-08-2017 11:43 AM

Let me check my schedule. Haven't looked that far out.

ptlyon 06-08-2017 07:46 PM

Wait, what? The eclipse is on a Monday? F that. Suck butt nuggets sun and moon!

displacedinMN 06-08-2017 09:20 PM

I will be in Fargo Fri-Sun to deliver the kid to NDSU. Then head south to watch the eclipse Monday morning. The real problem is the possibility of traffic jams.

I'm just off of I-29 in NW MO,speculation from our Chamber has our town of 70,000 or so ballooning to over 1/2 a million and numerous places here are renting space so I would plan accordingly. You're welcome to park here that day for $20 and join the festivities.

As for the glasses I've got a large order coming in next weekI'll be selling at my fireworks warehouse, mine are custom made and will be one of a kind commemorative, anyone who rents space or comes to my place for the eclipse will get a pair as part of the $20 fee.

displacedinMN 06-28-2017 01:53 PM

Just a bump.

Nzoner-Thanks for the offer but I did not want to go that far west. Not as of yet.
It may depend on if I need to head to the farm in Iowa on the way home.

bevischief 06-28-2017 03:29 PM

His place would make for a great viewing. Right training new people don't know if they will let take the time off to make.

KChiefs1 06-28-2017 03:51 PM

Too bad the Chiefs would have closed training camp by then.

There's a place here in Hopkinsville, KY where you can scuba dive in a reclaimed quarry "lake" and view the eclipse.

Damn,I decided to call a local campground up the road and see how they were doing and the woman said they'd been booked for months so she gladly offered to give my number out as another location for camping.

As of today I have 70+ people staying here in either RV's or tents from as far south as Texas and as far North as Wisconsin.

Watch online. It is safer.

Also-I loaned my telescope to another teacher. I asked him about getting it back and he cannot find the lenses for it. I still will end up in MO for it, but just with my solar viewer, not a telescope. Thanks dude.

Hell, its basically 99% here. Its good enough for me to avoid all the crowds in the totality zone.

The next one is April 8, 2024 but you'd have to go to Arkansas or SE Missouri to view it and who wants to do that.

It's worth it to me. Every person I've ever heard speak that has been through a total eclipse describes it as an incredible experience. The next time I'll have a closer option will be 30 years from now.

Have you checked into Hiawatha's doings? There are some small NEKS communities that will experience a total eclipse that may not be crazy like the bigger towns with amenities.

I have never been in one of these but I've lost count of the number of people who've said the difference between that 99 and 100% is huge. There was an article in the Star about it the other day... but even going back months and years I've seen dozens of articles, posts on forums, etc all saying the same thing.

At 100% you can actually take your glasses off and look at it. The sun's so bright, even at 99% it doesn't get completely dark, so you don't see stars, or the sun's corona.

Best map I have found

https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/sites/d...map/index.html

My post from facebook

Information on the Eclipse-Aug 21
I plan on being in Missouri for the full eclipse-but anyone should be able to safely see the partial eclipse here.

Here is some information:
Total eclipse path-https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/…/f…/interactive_map/index.html

NASA page-
https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/eclipse-maps

Animations of every state and what they will see-Here it will be about 80%. I am mentioned on that page too.
http://shadowandsubstance.com/2017/2017e.html

You may still be able to find solar viewers but you should NEVER look at the sun directly, here is a page to view the eclipse without looking at it.
https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/2d3d-pr...project…
or
https://www.timeanddate.com/ecl…/mak...projector.html

or watch it online

I'm going to my cousin's farm just west of Troy. I thought driving up on K7 would be a good option, but it appears both Leavenworth and Atchison are having big events. That, along with everyone else going further north, might be just as crowded as any other route/destination.

Al Bundy 08-13-2017 12:11 PM

I'll be driving back south on I-35 from Des Moines.

I've rarely seen hwy 75 not busy. K4 isn't exactly a sleepy backroad either. Maybe they are basing it on the non-locals will more likely use 4-lane highways.
