I'm sure it is cool. I still like the design of the M$ one better.

Hopefully they will talk about iphone 4.0 OS.

If this is even accurate I have no idea.

This iPad so far just looks like a big iphone.

Bane 01-27-2010 12:24 PM

Looks pretty neat to me,but I wouldn't be interested in getting one.

Deberg_1990 01-27-2010 12:27 PM

Looks cool....but have no idea how it is different from a latop or IPhone?

The Franchise 01-27-2010 12:29 PM

I can't wait to see the lines to buy one of these on it's release date.

I for one won't be standing in those lines.

WoodDraw 01-27-2010 12:29 PM

Man, all of these live update streams are getting pounded

Saulbadguy 01-27-2010 12:29 PM

What's this oversized iPod touch being priced at?

88TG88 01-27-2010 12:33 PM

This thing has been rumored for almost two years. It looks to me like a big ipod touch.

DMAC 01-27-2010 12:35 PM

Hopefully alot will come from this. I see this being huge for business' and presentations in the future.

I think they're teasing something here, otherwise this has been disappointing.

Fish 01-27-2010 12:38 PM

The niche for this is too small to justify the price tag they're going to give it. It's a neat gadget, and will definitely be worth the price is some specific situations. But I can't see this catching on with any casual users....

Same. So far, I am sticking with an ebook reader purchase.

I'm underwhelmed. Sadly.

Put me in with the "what?" crowd. It's a giant iPod Touch. It's a thinner smaller laptop with no keyboard. It might appeal to a niche market of "people who have iPods but don't have Apple desktops, and want to try a Tablet as a second computer instead of buying a traditional laptop". But they make non-Apple notebook computers which are probably a lot cheaper than what this is going to be. I don't get it.

Well, I thought it was going to be a lot like the iPhone but I didn't expect it to literally be a blown up iPhone/Touch.

Now, if they managed to get it down to Kindle DX price $450ish, then it might be a game changer. But they won't.

And, for me, I wanted it to be a good media reader. LCD <<<<<<<<< eink. So, again, a loss for me on that front.

WoodDraw 01-27-2010 12:53 PM

This would be great for traveling, but what else? I'd rather have the mobility of the iPhone, rather than the scaled up screen with that same aps. Like I said though, something more has to be coming. If not, this could have been released quite a long time ago.

I'm sure it'll be overpriced,as a Mac user,I'm very accustomed to that.I just really don't see why anyone would want one.Well maybe people who just like to have the next new thing or whatever. As far as the traveling aspect of it,my 13 inch Macbook takes up very little space and is easy to pack.

irishjayhawk 01-27-2010 12:56 PM

They're demoing the book reader now.

Still no mention of how it stacks up to Kindle/Nook/etc. That's the issue.

penguinz 01-27-2010 12:56 PM

Looks like a freaking joke. Basically a 10" iPod touch.

In terms of their computers, Mac has always been pricey. In terms of their iPods, they're more pricey than MP3 players but IMO they're worth the difference. I bought an iPod Touch a few months ago (8G, $199) and I love the thing. So if the Tablet is basically the Touch with more abilities (e.g. Flash and Java) AND is cheaper than a laptop, I would definitely consider picking one up. But the "cheaper than a laptop" part is the key...

WoodDraw 01-27-2010 12:56 PM

And seriously, didn't all of the huge Mac sites know this was coming? Maybe they could have called up their hosts and asked for a little more server power for a day. It's like a ****ing geocites page getting thrown on slashdot. Come on, guys...

right now you are probably right but as they evolve they will end up replacing laptops completely.

i like the idea of the courier booklet ... you can read double side and you have controls that aren't in the middle of your screen.

i wish the would make the kindle 2 a booklet. it would double the screen area without increasing the size much and would allow them to make the buttons etc more user friendly.

irishjayhawk 01-27-2010 01:01 PM

For comparison, Ed Kennnedy's memoir on Apple's iBook store = 15. Amazon: 10.

Courier, AFAIK, is currently vaporware. Prototype, sure. But hardly near release.

Hell, think about their issue with WinMo 7 and the delays there. Microsoft is too unfocused. So I don't see courier being released any time soon.

Of course, I'd love to be wrong. Competition is always good.

NewChief 01-27-2010 01:04 PM

Launching into the iWork demo, which is what -should- separate this thing from an iPhone/touch.

I think you're more likely to see entire businesses (hospitals especially) and educational institutes adopt them than to see big usage among individuals. They're going to have to do a lot to convince biz/schools that there's more value and usefulness in these than a $250 netbook, though.

Textbooks is the key point for universities. That's the big market here.

Still, nothing like a Kindle version for readability though.

I kinda figure they're Apple's version of PC's net books. My bro has one of those lil 9 inch dell net books, and their cool I guess, but it has no disk drive and very limited power so I'm not interested in one.
I like the 13 inch laptops, but wouldn't really want to go any smaller,so the Apple tablet prob isn't gonna get my attention.

The problem with a Kindle, though, is in being able to work with the text as you use it. Can you annotate? can you copy and paste it and email portions of it? Can you pull it into a document for editing? Can you share it, then collaboratively edit it with others with a similar device. That's the advantages that this has over an e-reader, imo.

Ideally, this gives you the functionality and comfort of an e-reader, but the robust power of an actual computer. We'll see, though.

Definitely.

That was my main thought. Hospitals love the tablets. But I just don't see the interest-catching "zinger" here, that would justify the higher price than existing tablets.

Easily connecting to projectors is huge. I wish that iPhones had that... hopefully subsequent models will. That's a huge deal for me, because i have students work with their iPhones all the time. If we could throw up their screen on the smartboard/projector that would be the shit.

irishjayhawk 01-27-2010 01:14 PM

250mb of data is $15? And they call that a good plan?

LOL @ steve.

NewChief 01-27-2010 01:15 PM

Pretty kickass prices on data. 250MB doesn't seem like much, but $30 a month for unlimited isn't bad.

WoodDraw 01-27-2010 01:16 PM

$30 unlimited 3G data

That's gotta hurt for iPhone users. How many data fees can you get hit with? AT&T too. How will their shit network handle more 3G?

NewChief 01-27-2010 01:16 PM

Yeah, who the hell would only use $250MB of data. I suppose if you're usually on wifi when using and only rarely needing to use the 3G service... that might be okay. Would be cool if they did rollover data... heh.

WoodDraw 01-27-2010 01:17 PM

"However, all of the iPad 3G models are unlocked, and they use the new GSM microSIMs.""

Does that mean other carriers could offer plans?

Yeah the $30 unlimited is amazing. And no contract.

But, as WoodDraw points out, ATT can't handle iPhone 3G. how are they going to handle this, too?

NewChief 01-27-2010 01:19 PM

Drumrolll..... and the price is.....

irishjayhawk 01-27-2010 01:19 PM

And there's the killer. $500.

DMAC 01-27-2010 01:19 PM

mmmuuurrrrrrrr

NewChief 01-27-2010 01:19 PM

$499. Holy shit. Competitive!

WoodDraw 01-27-2010 01:19 PM

Starting at $499. Not bad...

irishjayhawk 01-27-2010 01:19 PM

That was the killer app. Is there a one more thing?

the Talking Can 01-27-2010 01:20 PM

$499

$29 for unlimited data plan

no contract

Fish 01-27-2010 01:20 PM

Cheaper than I expected.....

WoodDraw 01-27-2010 01:21 PM

With 3G, it's $629. WTF?

irishjayhawk 01-27-2010 01:21 PM

Yes, but no 3G unless you bump to $629.

Dunno if that's a big asterisk.

dirk digler 01-27-2010 01:21 PM

Wow $500? That is alot cheaper than I thought it would be. The rumors were $1000

NewChief 01-27-2010 01:21 PM

Ugh. Chart doesn't look so hot, though. To get a 3G model, you're going up to $629. That being said, most corporate and education uses are going to have wifi, so they probably won't need the 3G.

DMAC 01-27-2010 01:22 PM

Really hope they say iphone 4.0 os is coming soon and it has multitasking.

NewChief 01-27-2010 01:22 PM

DMAC 01-27-2010 01:23 PM

WoodDraw 01-27-2010 01:24 PM

I wonder if it has a horizontal and vertical dock slot?

irishjayhawk 01-27-2010 01:24 PM

So keyboard dock. My only question is why not have the dock port on the bottom of the horizontal side. Therefore making it like a laptop...

the Talking Can 01-27-2010 01:25 PM

Well, the design is pretty sweet. But, yes, this looks like a technical snafu.

Dunno if that's really a deal breaker for people though.

Mr. Laz 01-27-2010 01:27 PM

at my doctor's office they actually carrier around a laptop from office to office to document the visit of each patient and have a paperless history right there.

something like this would be great for them ... especially a booklet with touch screen writing.
