(I'm not too worried about the details on the Streater pick since he was briefly on the team two years ago. Do what you think is right, and if you started playing less than two years ago, just take the higher pick.)


On another note, as we play longer and our rosters diverge from the Chiefs', it's harder to accept reject trades in a wheelin' dealin' NFL world. So for example, if you don't have the 2020 second rounder of the Chiefs that's in the Frank Clark trade, you can't technically make the Frank Clark trade according to our current rules. I would propose that if the Chiefs make a trade like that that involves draft picks that you don't possess, you can still make the trade if you give up an equal or greater number of draft points that the Chiefs did. So if, for example, you lack the 2020 second-round pick, you can give up your 3rd and 4th or whatever else adds up to the same draft value. Does that sound reasonable?

Here are my picks. At the moment, I'm refusing the Frank Clark trade. I like the guy and he's probably worth it, but I prefer to forge my own team at that price. I might change my mind after the NFL draft as I consider my options.

2019 Draft

Round 1, Selection 29 | Byron Murphy, CB, Washington (#2-33 ARZ)

My roster desperately needs an infusion of talent at the CB position so it really comes down to getting a top-tier player here for me. I really wanted to move up for Sweat at DE, but I just couldn't do it with my other needs. Murphy should at least lock down my #2 CB spot for the forseeable future.

Round 2, Selection 48 (f/MIA) | Erik McCoy, OC, Texas A&M (#2-48 NO)

I am trading up to get a starting center here, sending #2-61 and #2-63 to the Miami Dolphins for #2-48 and #4-116 (This is the same output they gave New Orleans on draft day). Losing Morse this offseason really hurts and Bozeman hasn't earned a starting gig in Baltimore for me so I have to go up and get a guy I think is going to be a stud at the position for years to come in McCoy. It pains me deeply to not take Thornhill, but I took Jessie Bates last year at the same position.

Roune 3, Selection 92 | Oshane Ximines, ER, Old Dominion (#3-95 NYG)

I decided that I'm going to accept the Chiefs' trade of Dee Ford and that leaves a hole in my depth at edge rusher. At this point I'm intent on maintaining the 3-4 defense I have in place so Ximines fits really well as an OLB. He brings a solid repetoire of rush moves to the table and maintains gap discipline as a run defender. He should have every opportunity to become a significant contributor early.

Round 4, Selection 116 (f/MIA) | Amani Hooker, DB, Iowa (#4-116 TEN)

I'm looking at the long-term here by selecting Hooker, much like the Titans selecting him as a likely future heir to Kenny Vaccarro. Mathieu is in on a 3-year deal and we'll see if he plays that out. Hooker is a prototypical box safety but he does have some abilities in coverage. He's at least great special teams depth. I could have reached out and tried to take another CB here or some defensive line help but decided I liked this value more.

Round 5, Selection 167 | Cole Holcomb, LB, North Carolina (#5-173 WAS)

I'm throwing darts out there every year trying to help my dismal linebacking corps and this selection is really no different. I like Holcomb's overall skill set and he'll be given an opportunity to become a starter in Washington given the Reuben Foster situation and little else at the position after Mason Foster who is already 30.

Round 6, Selection 201 | Derwin Gray, OT, Maryland (#7-219 PIT)

I really like Gray and think he has a shot to stick on Pittsburgh's roster. He's the only offensive lineman they selected this year and they could really use depth and a future replacement at LG for 33-year old Ramon Foster, which is what I see Gray becoming. He's a big, strong dude just like Foster and should be able to sit and develop for a couple of seasons. I don't have an immediate need at guard either, so if he sits and stews and turns out then that's great.

Round 6, Selection 214 (Comp) | Alize Mack, TE, Notre Dame (#7-231 NO)

The back end of this draft is like throwing shit at the wall and hoping something sticks, but Mack has a solid opportunity in New Orleans where they signed an aging Jared Cook (32) and have nobody else behind him that can't be unseated.

Round 7, Selection 243 | Olabisi Johnson, WR, Colorado State (#7-247 MIN)
I like Johnson as a player and I think he's going to end up sticking somewhere as a slot/#3 type that can make a living underneath due to his solid frame and change of direction ability. There certainly are opportunities in Minnesota after their top 2 receivers.

Draft Notes

I'm disappointed I wasn't able to really address defensive line like I needed to. I very nearly accepted the trade up for Khalen Saunders because I do really like him, and I may end up kicking myself on that one. I just question his opportunity to be an every-down player in KC and that's kind of what I'm after at this point. Realistically, I'm probably a starter short there but I can't do much about it. There just wasn't realistic value there throughout the draft over and above what I took for players and I'm not about to drastically reach for a lesser football player. This is also one of the reasons I made the decision to part ways with Dee Ford for a 2nd round pick like KC actually did. I believe I'll need to spend early picks next year to get a couple of defensive lineman.

I also don't particularly care for my linebacker situation. I've thrown a lot of mid-round picks at the position and nothing seems to stick. I took another poke this year with Holcomb, so we'll see. I'm guessing I'll really need to hit one early next season.

Okay, let's start out with picks.

The #1-29 pick is worth 640 points, and with the 35 percent trade-down discount, that means I can trade it for 416 points. I found a trade partner in the Dallas Cowboys, who are giving me in return...

#2-58 - WR Andy Isabella (Cardinals) - I desperately need receivers. I was torn between Isabella and Metcalf, but I like Isabella's speed. I also considered not trading down and taking one of the top cornerbacks of Byron Murphy, Greedy Williams, or Deandre Baker. But I don't need cornerbacks. I would have been interested in Mecole Hardman, but didn't want to trade up to get him.

#2-61 - OLB Jaylon Ferguson (Ravens). I've been enamored with Ferguson, and my team is abysmal at rushing the passer. I also strongly considered Zach Allen, who would probably be a safer pick, but I like Ferguson as a rusher. I idly considered OLB Germaine Pratt and DE Chase Winovich, but liked Ferguson's upside more. I also considered taking Metcalf here and loading up at WR, but couldn't afford that luxury given my pass rush woes.

#3-92 - DE Anthony Nelson (Buccaneers). This was a hard pick. I considered G Dru Samia hard, with the goal of taking Joe Jackson later to fill my DE spot, but this way I can get Michael Jordan in that other spot. I hope that the Nelson/Jordan combo ends up better than the Samia/Jackson combo. I also considered T Bobby Evans, but need tackle less than other positions.

#4-128 - QB Easton Stick (Chargers). I need a backup quarterback, and Stick seems a good value in that regard. He's a stopgap who would only see action if Russell Wilson on my team goes down, but I think he's got development potential. I strongly considered Jarrett Stidham and Gardner Minshew, both of whom are probably safer picks, but I like Stick. I strongly considered Joe Jackson at DE in this spot, who I like a lot, and pondered Mack Wilson. I'd like Wilson, but need to fill other holes.

#4-136 - G Michael Jordan (Bengals). I've had trouble staffing my guard spots, and figure he's got a decent shot of grabbing a starting job. As noted above, my key question was whether to take Jordan here or take Samia earlier. I thought Jordan seemed like a better risk/reward prospect.

#5-167 - OLB Sutton Smith (Steelers). I've been intrigued by Smith and was heavily targeting him. I didn't really consider anyone else in this slot, though I liked LB David Long as well.

#6-201 - WR Kelvin Harmon (Redskins). I need WR depth, and he seemed like a great value here. I didn't really consider anyone else in this slot.

#6-214 - TE Isaac Nauta (Lions). I need TE depth, and he seemed like a good value. I was very torn between him and CB Kris Boyd, but eventually figured I had a better roster spot available for Nauta. I also briefly considered DE Jalen Jelks.

#7-243 - TE Caleb Wilson (Cardinals). I strongly considered DE Michael Dogbe and perhaps DE Jordan Brailford, but figured I'd stock up on my TE position.

Here's my current training camp roster.

I don't need a cornerback at all, and had other holes in my roster, but I was sorely tempted to not trade down and take Murphy. I hate passing on a top prospect at his position.

Yeah, unfortunately, I'm kinda stuck with KC's decision making at the position for the most part so I've made it a point to address it the past 2 drafts. I had 3 guys on my mind and 2 required a trade up (Sweat and Tillery). That said, I see Murphy as a carbon copy of Asante Samuel and if he is then he's going to be a top-flight CB for years to come. If Tarvarius Moore turns out in San Francisco, and he did flash later in the year, then I got something going. Holton Hill is going to be a player in Minnesota for sure. He saw the field alot last year. So, that said I think I'm alot happier there now than I was.

I have a couple of solid receivers in Boyd and Higgins, but getting a sure thing aside from Watkins would have been nice, so going up for A.J. Brown was on the table. I felt going up and getting a top center was more important in the 2nd round. Had Connor McGovern slid a bit further in the 3rd to take at 92, I would have taken Brown instead. All said, I think I'm going to be very happy with McCoy.

My D-line is hope and prayer. I know Phillips will start in Buffalo. Sieler is penciled in to start in Baltimore but no guarantees. I have to hope that Williams and Watkins at least contribute heavily. Not addressing it could be stupid on my part.

Ximines is my one big worry at this point. I like his production and his play style. He doesn't have the juice I'd like but he has really good functional strength and a good get-off. I took the same chance on Matt Judon though, taking game strength and on-field over running in shorts, and he's turned out to be a solid get and actually enabled me to consider trading Dee Ford.


You surprised me with the trade down for Isabella. I think he's going to be a really good player. You get some good depth in the 4th with the move too so that definitely made for a good draft for you.

I took a long look at him, pondering taking him if I took Zach Allen in the second instead of Jaylon Ferguson. I tend to like higher risk/higher reward players for some reason, though, and I liked Ferguson, which meant that I didn't really have a spot for Ximines. I needed both a DE and and OLB.

I was also really interested in Sutton Smith, so he was my luxury pick, and I've had a devil of a time getting OLBs, so I'm trying to give myself more chances to win one.

Time will tell if I should've taken Metcalf or Isabella. Metcalf was probably the safer pick, and I suspect he'll thrive with Russell Wilson throwing to him, just like Hardman will thrive with Mahomes throwing to him. Isabella's a bigger risk in that regard, but I have a weakness for shifty speed.

Trying to catch up on all of this so spent a couple of hours this morning going through it all. Think I figured out draft situation correctly. I didn't peruse anybody else's draft here before landing but do see now that I'm not the only one who picked Ximines.
