It is preseason, and it is the first preseason game, but after going 3-17 over the previous 5 years, it was nice to see the first team actually show up.

Marcellus 08-10-2012 09:18 PM

Not as good or bad as CP will claim it was depending on agenda.

Much better than previous years, but doesn't mean a thing except for potential yet.

suds79 08-10-2012 09:19 PM

Well my DVR F-ed me over and I didn't get to watch squat.

I need the cliff notes version of what I missed.

Bump 08-10-2012 09:19 PM

how did Poe look? I only caught the 2nd half on a stream

dirk digler 08-10-2012 09:19 PM

We won and nobody got hurt. I call that perfect for a preseason game

petegz28 08-10-2012 09:20 PM

First off I don't remember the last time we won our 1st pre-season game? I know it means nothing in the end but nonetheless.

We looked together. We looked organized. We were sharp, great tempo. One botched play by the starters on offense but shit will happen in the pre-season.

One thing they said was that Cassel was not allowed to check out of plays under Haley. I speculated that for quite some time and tonight I think I was proven to be correct.

1 or 2 decent push plays, double teamed some. Didn't do much.

Looked so-so. Took on some double and triple teams and looked decent at doing so but you can tell he still needs to work at it.

ShowtimeSBMVP 08-10-2012 09:21 PM

Cards won't win 3 games this year.

Pasta Little Brioni 08-10-2012 09:21 PM

It's definately a good sign. Too bad McCluster didn't find the endzone.

mr. tegu 08-10-2012 09:21 PM

We looked so much more comfortable than we ever did under Haley. Last season we didn't play starters in the first preseason game IIRC and this season they looked about ready for the regular season.

Mr. Arrowhead 08-10-2012 09:22 PM

You certainly can tell Todd Haley no longer coaches this team just from this 1 meaningless preseason game

Yeah, we played some of them. Remember, Cassel handed the ball off like 7 times and then was pulled.

Night and day difference. Night and day.

The Franchise 08-10-2012 09:24 PM

Our RB depth is a positive.

Our QB depth is going to end up killing us.

petegz28 08-10-2012 09:24 PM

Couple things I saw on offense that are really encouraging.

1. A screen play
2. The TD to Hillis. Hillis actually went downfield and not sideways.

Pioli made some comments pertaining how organized the team was this year. I was sure he was poking to Haley on some of that.

Well, I agree that Haley may not have been great, but keep in mind that we barely had started practicing by this time last year.

Stanzi should get 2nd team reps all this week and get the nod after Cassell in the next game.

Helps when you sign good free agents too. Pioli didn't do that for Haley.

Hammock Parties 08-10-2012 09:26 PM

I'd like to see Cassel hit a wide receiver who will be starting for us at some point.

Our defense is going to rape faces, and I am gonna have to make another video.

Yeah but so did 31 other teams and we looked like dog shit. We looked like dog shit under Haley and Herm when they had full off-seasons programs. As someone posted earlier, 3-17 in the preseason in 5 years says a lot about what was wrong with our coaching over that timespan.

Yeah I remember that now. But that is on Haley for trying to reinvent the wheel by changing up pretty standard preseason practices. But heck in the third preseason game against the Packers we were still playing our starters against their 2nd and 3rd string and we still didn't do well.

Was incomplete. He threw it up into double coverage. Probably shouldn't have made the throw but it's Baldwin so he probably said **** it, I'm giving him a chance.

What's going to happen to Breaston? With Bowe back and Baldwin working on the otherside.....does Breaston and McCluster split the slot reps?

Dude, I don't give a flying **** who he hits if it moves the ball and scores points. Contrary to what you might think, defenses have a tendancy to cover the #1 and #2 WR's a lot.

Cassel hit exactly one pass I haven't seen him hit before.

Granted, it was a very nice throw.

This offense is not going to work if Dexter, or any slot receiver, is getting all the catches.

I still think Droughn is going to beat out Gray.

Red Brooklyn 08-10-2012 09:35 PM

Cassel looked much better than I expected. Call me cautiously pessimistic.

McCluster... look, it's no secret. I love the guy. I think he's a blast to watch. I know he's not the best on the field, but he adds a lot of dimension and I think he gets treated too harshly around here. I though he looked great.

Our running game is going to be the best in the league if everyone stays healthy.

Our O-Line looks every bit as good as expected, and maybe even a little better in places.

Defense is a beast.

But... it's only one preseason game. We'll see if they can keep it going. I just want to see consistency and smart, aggressive play.

Cassel has made a career out of hitting short passes and not putting up points. I'm glad he hit open receivers but, again, I've seen him hit those passes before.

Encouraged by the one impressive throw he made.

The Chiefs' running game and defense looked sharp. Cassel looked like the best QB on the Chiefs roster by a wide margin. Woulda liked to see Baldwin get more balls thrown his way....

And the Cardinals are absolutely awful. They might be picking #1 or #2 next year.

petegz28 08-10-2012 09:36 PM

Yeah I had no idea he had 61 receptions in 2010. When you can pass him the ball and make the first defensive guy that contacts him be a DB you are in good shape.

Dex can be the #4, he is still going get his plays in and make them count. I want to see the best on the field. So far Breaston didn't catch a big drop in the bucket to set up a TD from the 5.

Yeah I don't get why McCluster is so loathed on CP. He's capable of making plays.

Winston is really gonna help beast up the right side of our line. Which is something that we haven't had since John Tait.

Hillis...what can you say? The guy is a beast. Having Charles, Hillis, and Gray...that's a lot of RB firepower. We should be a top 5 rushing team. I don't think I'm being too much of a homer in thinking that.

petegz28 08-10-2012 09:39 PM

Mother ****ers jiizz over Manning going 4-7 for 44 yards and a pick and still want to bash on Cassel for going 5-6 for 64 and a TD.

My initial thought -- avoid game threads.

Bunch of annoying pieces of shit in tonight's thread.

That's all.

O.city 08-10-2012 09:40 PM

The deeper throw on the corner to Dexter was a really nice throw. Thought he looked pretty sharp and had a good grasp of the offense.

We will have to wait and see tho. Defenses are gonna get exotic. We are gonna need him to make a play against an exotic Steeler coverage or Ravens crazy passrush. That's when I'll judge.

I'm still going hate Cassell unless of course he wins us the damn Super Bowl. Then I will love him and fondle his wife for him. I can do that anyways but he had a good showing tonight.

petegz28 08-10-2012 09:41 PM

I'll say it again, the biggest improvment you will see out of Cassel this year is he is now able to check out of plays. They said tonight more than once that under Haley he was not allowed to do so.

Rasputin 08-10-2012 09:42 PM

It was nice to see Cam Sheffield in on some action. He adds good depth to the charts.

Chiefs Pantalones 08-10-2012 09:42 PM

Considering a year ago we lost 25-0 to the Bucs in the first preseason game, I'd say it's improvement. It's just preseason but you can see a prepared team.

Oh, another encouraging sign, the TD to Hillis was a hot route adjust to a blitz

Yeah, I was already saddling up on the Draughn bandwagon. Then Gray started making him look like a chump. Seriously, our running game is gonna be a blast to watch this year.
