Will Dwayne Bowe's baggage scare teams away?

Will Dwayne Bowe's baggage scare teams away?

Conventional wisdom says there should be three top receivers available in free agency this year: Greg Jennings, Mike Wallace, and Dwayne Bowe.

They each have the skills to be a "No. 1" target but they also have some knocks against them. Jennings is coming off an injury-plagued year. Wallace is a speed merchant that hasn't exactly developed into a complete receiver. Bowe's downside is harder to define.

"I am scared to death of Dwayne Bowe," one scout told SI.com's Peter King. "Like him a lot, but not sure what we'd be buying if we signed him. Too much baggage."

Bowe didn't have the best reputation early in his days after getting drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs. His propensity for drops matched his up-and-down effort. (And up-and-down weight.) Bowe has mostly avoided negative headlines the last two seasons, but his reputation for selfish behavior clearly still persists.

I have little doubt Bowe will get paid big bucks regardless. King mentions Jennings, Wallace, and Brian Hartline as this year's biggest receiver targets, but Bowe has the most well rounded skill set of any one of them. He's put up big numbers despite shaky quarterback play, even if Bowe is the master at garbage time production.

The biggest concern here is how Bowe will react to earning big money. He's played his best the last two years while playing for a new contract. He won't get Vincent Jackson money, but Bowe should do very well even if he scares some teams to death.

Uh...he was you know, kinda productive 3 years ago. Just like a tiny, little bit so.

Hammock Parties 02-11-2013 09:14 AM

I've heard the Chiefs are pretty close with Bowe.

In58men 02-11-2013 09:14 AM

We need to re-sign Bowe

Wanted to call this out, just in case anybody here was under the delusion that NFL scouts have any clue WTF they are talking about. Seriously, I think the average ChiefsPlanet poster could step into a role in an NFL scouting department and rise to the top fairly fast.

BossChief 02-11-2013 09:14 AM

Speaking like it's a foregone conclusion that he walks.

About as much as Ray Rays involvement in a murder has stopped the NFL from slobbing his knob and the city of Baltimore's plans to erect a statue in his honor.

Good. I hope he scares 31 teams to death.

RealSNR 02-11-2013 09:27 AM

You want to talk about baggage? How about Jared Allen's drinking? Does he still have baggage with that?

It's been 3 ****ing years since the "importing women" comment. JFC. Enough with this garbage.

I wanna know what the baggage is/was.

This is sad Bowe puts up numbers with dog shit for QBs. He doesn't get into trouble and for the most part keeps his mouth shut. Sign the guy and get some good offensive players and a QB

Yeah, I don't get why people would be scared.

The only trouble he's been in was in 09 when he tested positive for diuretics.

-King- 02-11-2013 09:39 AM

Cool. Stay away from him as much as possible so we can re-sign him.

He's never been arrested to my knowledge, let alone convicted of anything.

He's put up with bad QB play for his entire career and still been productive.

Baggage? That's ridiculous.

Actually he's not even loud. He may have had a bit of a tendency, in the beginning, toward future diva-ness, but Haley washed that off of him and made him a solid player. So what if he on occasion points at his jersey number? Tha's not a "baggage." this man is one of the few in this past miserable season who fought hard in every game. People forget how not having a real QB has kept D-Bowe down. A WR with a "baggage" would have complained about that many times. I LOVE that we have him and deeply HOPE the FO is wise enough to keep him.

There are only two negatives to his game:

1) Lacking top end speed.

2) Gets nervous and when the game is on the line and drops the "big" catch. Drops happen. No WR is perfect. Bowe has a very bad habit of dropping balls that could change the outcome of the game.

LOL what baggage does Dwayne Bowe have exactly?

I get sick n tired of hearing this to be honest...

Rain Man 02-11-2013 12:05 PM

I agree with everyone else. Everything about that article is incorrect. Hopefully the article scares off some teams that don't do research.

WhiteWhale 02-11-2013 12:07 PM

Bowe didn't have up and down weight.

He played fine at 220, but Todd Haley wanted him lighter. It didn't make any real difference except that he took a shortcut and got suspended. Saying his weight was up and down is a lie.

Also "he played his best the last two years"

It's hard to take someone seriously when all of his facts are wrong.

1) He wasn't drafted for his speed. But more for his other physical talent like catching in traffic and runs after the catch.

2) Yes he has had a few of those late game drops. But I submit they are less than it looks. It's just magnified because we have been a miserable team finding ourselves in those type of situations too often. I chalk up Bowe's drops more to him wanting to do too much by himself and losing concentration because of it. Much like TrINT before he became Trent.

The tards that complain about Bowe's drops never mention his great catches.

He has FAR more great plays than drops.

Nor will they address that he's really just middle of the road in terms of drops. There are a lot of great WRs out there that drop a lot of passes. Welker, Calvin Johnson, Marshall, Cruz, Dez, Demaryius, Wayne and A.J. Green all had double digit drops this year. Bowe had 6...granted he didn't play the full season.

The more balls you get thrown your way, the more you are gonna drop. It's as simple as that.

WhiteWhale 02-11-2013 04:13 PM

I think Bowe's 'focus problems' were more of an early career thing and the stigma has followed him.

What I rarely see people mention is that Bowe is one of the better, if not the best, sideline pass catcher I see in the NFL. I mean catching sideline throws and tip toeing those two feet in. A good QB could do so much damage with a guy who possesses feet like that.

Maybe because the drops he has are more memorable. I don't give a crap if the wide receiver makes a 100 beautiful catches in a season if he drops easy ones that could win games in the end zone.

This is good thinking though. Really advanced, actually, because I hear the NFL is going away from traditional scoring and moving to fantasy football scoring.

Bowe has caught go ahead scores late against Minnesota and Indy in the last couple years and that was without even putting much thought into it. Also, tied a game against the Faid that almost put us in the postseason the year before last if Succop didn't get blocked a minute later.
