My wife and I need your help.

As Phobia, Pink, Monty and Stevie already know, Mrs. OnTheWarpath58 lost her job back in September. Needless to say, things have been rough lately, between this and her father having his 3rd bypass surgery and also having a pacemaker installed in December.

It's never a good time to lose a job, but it's extremely difficult to find work late in a calendar year. We're hoping that 2008 brings about an opportunity for her, and I'm hoping someone out there might be able to get her in touch with someone who appreciates her talents.

Her background is in the Commercial Construction industry, in Business Development. She's been in the industry since the early '90's, and has worked on/landed some monster construction jobs in the Midwest, including the Scottrade Center, EJ Dome, Ameristar Casino, and numerous other hospitals, hotels, museums, etc.

If anyone knows of someone at J.E. Dunn, Black and Veatch, or another General Contractor, please PM me.

While the majority of her experience is in the Construction industry, she's also held positions as VP of Sales and Marketing for a printing/document company, and is excellent at expanding sales and increasing business/revenue.

We're open to moving, whether it be KC or anywhere else.

We know it's a longshot, but it never hurts to spread the word.

TIA.

DaFace 01-19-2008 04:15 PM

Unfortunately, I won't be much help (unless she wants to come work at Rain Man, Inc. But I wish you guys the best of luck.

Would a mod sticky this please?

diehardchief4life 01-19-2008 05:13 PM

Try looking at the HNTB website. They are a design firm but are always hiring especially in the KC area. They have a lot of positions in the Federal group in Kansas City. Let me know if you are interested.

MTG#10 01-19-2008 05:14 PM

I know where she can get a job planting tulips...

Sorry, but you knew it was coming eventually. I figured I would get it out of the way.

Thanks for the info.

I'll have her look on their website.

I wish you and your wife much luck. I lost my job in November in residential home design but found work in commercial construction. It took 5 weeks and I thought it would never end but now it's all good. I wish I could help but I'm not near your area.

Thanks, Michael.

We are open to relocating for the right position, if you know/hear of anything, shoot me a PM.

She's always welcome at Edgewood Construction. Unfortunately, nobody is paid well there - not even the owner.

If you pay in ribs, jambalaya and a roof over our heads, it be the best offer we've gotten thus far.

Honestly, if my growth in the past year is any indication of future growth I'll be ready for her in a couple years. I've gone from just me to running a couple of crews. I've even been busy the entire winter which is amazing. We've been very blessed.

No really though, if you guys would consider coming and hanging out for a couple months to see what happens I'd talk about it. I've done enough on the commercial side to know that's probably where I need to be if I ever expect to make any money in this industry.

BigRedChief 01-19-2008 07:35 PM

Don't know anyone at those companies or in the construction business but I'll keep my ear to the ground. Anything I can do let me know.

Thanks. It's been Edgewood for the past 3 years. Prior to that it was Good Help These Days and I let my Dad keep that name when I parted with him. Great business name but it has a handyman flavor that I don't like.

Unfortunately for you I'm now stocking those disposals I installed for you for $30 cheaper than Home Depot. Wish I could have saved you that money at the time.

If you don't mind, please head over to my website and drop some customer feedback. http://edgewoodconstruction.com/?page_id=12

My company might be on the prowl for a new business developer very soon. They are very picky about their BD's. This would be sales in IT Consulting. Her territory would most likely be focused on St. Louis (the company is in St. Louis)

Does she have any experience in sales for consulting companies?

My wife and I just had dinner and watched the MU/KU game last night with a couple and the guy is in a mgmt position for a const company here in KC - he was talking about working on a big project down on the plaza right now and being short on people. I really don't know if they're short of laborers or what (don't really know anything about const biz). My wife is friends with his wife and I just met him last night so I'll have my wife talk to her first to see what kind of help they're needing. Like I said, I don't know anything about that biz and there may not be an opportunity there, but I'll find out.

It's a non-issue. If this thread can help anyone out there find work, then so be it.

No apology necessary guys.

Thanks to those of you who have replied this far. We really appreciate it.

The HNTB lead looks pretty good, they are hiring a Senior Marketing Coordinator in KC right now, and that fits her profile perfectly.

Thanks everyone, and please, keep the ideas coming.

Mosbonian 01-20-2008 11:52 AM

If the lead at HNTB doesn't work out, have her look at the ARAMARK website link below, as we have many good positions all over the country.

ARAMARK is a solid company with good benefits and plenty of personal growth opportunities.

Plenty of Construction opportunities out here in Dodge, if she wants to work for $10.00 an hour and learn a new language.

Seriously though, good luck in your tough times.

I could forward her resume to the hiring manager at HNTB. I am a civil engineer there currently and know a lot of people within the company. They like to hire people that are referred by people currently within the firm. My email address is chandlertodd@sbcglobal.net.

Damn.

You must have been reading my mind. I just tried to send you a PM and your box was full.

Interesting that a guy with 2 posts has a full PM box.

:hmmm:

Anyway, I'll head upstairs in a minute and forward on her cover letter and resume.

Thanks!

FWIW, the requisition number for that position is 08-0055, in case you need it.

OnTheWarpath15 01-20-2008 08:29 PM

She found a couple more that she's interested in. Working on getting requisition numbers for those positions now.

Thanks again for your help. I'll send an e-mail shortly.

diehardchief4life 01-20-2008 08:34 PM

I will gladly do anything I can to help you guys out. I have been at HNTB for 2 years and it is a very good place to work at. They have excellent benefits and a very good retirement program. I started in the KC office but now I work in the Overland Park Construction Services group.

As to why my PM box is full.. I don't think I can send a PM because I have not posted much. I always just browse the forums, but I saw your post and I thought I may be able to help you out.

Look forward to hearing from you soon.

She has 5 positions she's interested in, some are not in KC.

Should I send you those requisition numbers as well, or should she apply for those through the website?

We would want you to get credit for the referral.

Let me know.

diehardchief4life 01-20-2008 08:57 PM

You should go ahead and apply on the website and also send me an email with all of the reference #'s so I can send an email to the hiring managers so they will know to look for her resume. Send me her resume and cover letter as attachments also so that I can send them out to the hiring managers when I contact them. I will also keep my ear open at work because a lot of groups within HNTB hire without posting openings on the website. If you guys have any questions about the benefits at HNTB or anyting let me know. I will probably be able to answer them. When you send me the email, I will give you my work email address which is better for reaching me tomorrow.

FINALLY!

So we drove up to Dayton, OH so my wife could finish the interview process for this architecture firm she's been interviewing with for the past month or so and.....

She got the job.

Great company, great benefits, and a hefty pay raise over what she was making when she was laid off back in September.

It's been a rough 6 months, but thanks to those of you who passed on words of encouragement, job postings, etc.

FTR, we're not moving.

The company's Corporate HQ is in Dayton. Her final interview was with the Senior VP, who was originally supposed to come down here to meet with her. His schedule got jammed up, and he asked if she would be willing to come up, which of course was an obvious yes.

We even offered to drive to save them the money ($1300 to fly STL-Dayton on late notice?) without knowing the benefits. They paid all expenses, obviously, but paid us mileage as well. Wasn't expecting that, but at .50 per mile for a 850 mile RT, it was a pleasant surprise.....

As was the job offer, obviously.

Yeah, there's something going on in June we're doing, but I can't remember what.

Is Phil having another BBQ?

Hehe.....I'm up for BBQ too. ;-)

And here we are, almost four years later, and back in the same position. She was let go this morning.

They actually had the balls to look her in the eye and say, "this isn't due to performance, you've done everything we've asked of you and more. But we need to cut overhead so we can pay out bonuses to the shareholders."

I wish I was kidding.

So here we go again, late in the calendar year, in a shitty economy.

Everything in the OP is still accurate, and she now has 3+ years of selling architectural and engineering services on her resume.

If anyone, anywhere has a lead, please share. We're open to moving for the right position.

****.

Wish I could help you. Good luck and God bless.

OTWP58, Sorry to hear of this news. I will send you a PM with my email. Have her send me her resume and I will pass it around the OKC area to other business owners I know.

If you want.

Titty Meat 10-14-2011 02:15 PM

Sorry to hear that OTW

Sorry to hear it. I've been let go because of overhead before, and it sucks. Hope she finds something soon.

Phobia 10-14-2011 02:25 PM

This is terrible news. I guess this means my traditional Christmas gift will not arrive this year? That's okay. My wife usually got mad at the mess the strippers left behind.

I'm sorry for the situation that you and your family have been put into. I hope you can find something to help soon.

Wow. Shitty. Sorry to hear that.

Did they at least offer her some sort of severance package?

Dartgod 10-14-2011 02:42 PM

That sucks.

I sent you a PM with some info about the company I work for.

Bwana 10-14-2011 02:51 PM

Damn, sorry to hear that bud. I hope she picks up something quickly.

Yep.

A whopping two weeks, plus vacation time paid out and insurance/dental through the end of November.

Unbelievable.

DaFace 10-14-2011 03:19 PM

Damn dude. Hang in there.

Predarat 10-14-2011 03:20 PM
