Exactly.

I think Mark had a better sense of who his character was than the director. He went with it and did his best (and I agree Hamill is very good in the film and his scenes - along with Snoke scenes - are my favorites).

I was involved in developing a television show about a beloved and very iconic character and the studio who financed it brought in a showrunner who had a new take that was wildly inconsistent with who this character had been over the previous decades on film. Not surprisingly, the changes led to the network not picking up the pilot. The point I made at the time was that Godzilla can't be 7-feet tall and James Bond isn't German. There are some times that a character is what it is and shouldn't be changed just for the sake of changing the character.

As I've said before, however, I'm not one of those who was wildly offended by the direction that RJ took with Luke. I agree with Kevin Smith that the moment at the end would have had more weight had Luke actually been there, but it was a creative choice.

How he walked back his initial statements about the movie and his character, I'm guessing.

Ah, the denial that the script took Luke in the wrong direction. I doubt that's how Hamill really feels but I could be wrong.

His reaction minutes after seeing the film for the first time at the premiere is priceless...

Based on studio estimates, STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI won the 3-day weekend, $52.4M to $50.5M.

But JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE won the 4-day weekend, including Monday, $67.0M to $65.5M.

The Negative Word of mouth for this movie is strong.

And may solo suffer for the sins of this movie.

Anyone else think it's odd that in less than TWO WEEKS Finn is now a resistance hero?...

You mean like Luke and Han after ANH?

Luke is the son of a legendary Jedi and Han a world class smuggler.

Finn is a Trash man who took on the First order general with ease.

And now - people are hoping that JJ will somehow come up with something that will "save the story" - but we all know that's going to be Return of the Last Jedi. Fans will be complacently pleased, but will still be left asking what the point was to continuing the franchise (like they did after TFA).

People can be mad at Rian all they want to - but JJ has a track record of starting these exact mystery-driven stories and completely disregarding what the outcome is going to be. People are surprised that these mysteries had divisive payoffs, but at this point with JJ, should they be? I for one loved that Rian was willing to subvert expectations (Killing off 8 foot Palpatine, refusing to re-tell the Yoda/Obi-Wan - Luke story, and refusing the Deus-Ex the ending) while creating a character driven story that had compelling arcs for Kylo, Rey, Poe and Luke (though I know Luke's is being hotly debated).

Anywho - I was pleasantly surprised with TLJ and I'd love for JJ to prove me wrong with 9, but I'm guessing he's going to play it safe again - and that's incredibly disappointing.

Exactly this. Great post.

The question was in regard to it being odd that Finn is a resistance hero in so short a time. They threw luke and han a party complete with medals and fanfare and neither one of them were known to the resistance only days before.

No one in the resistance knew of Luke's lineage at the time of the medal ceremony. He was just a moisture farmer and no one knew han for shit. He was just a smuggler... not a "world class smuggler".

Fact is, most of the people who grew up with the EU are just not going to like the new stories. It doesn't feel like Star Wars, because this isn't the Star Wars you know.

That's OK. They will be making these until the end of time. They're not targeting the existing fans. They're targeting the kids and the next generation of fans.

Good grief, man. I know you’re a huge fan but you have zero understanding of the movie business, the box office and expectations.

I think you are emphasizing a difference that the casual fan was completely unaware of. I doubt there were very many people in the world that didn't go to RO because it was mearly a "Star Wars story" and not the Skywalker saga.
