Unlocking your smartphone will be illegal

The Librarian of Congress determined in October of last year that certain actions involving mobile phones were illegal under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The rules were revised to state that while it is legal to jailbreak smartphones, it is illegal to jailbreak tablets and illegal to unlock phones without permission from your wireless provider. A 90-day window was put in place that allowed consumers to purchase a phone and unlock it, however that window closes on January 26th, TechNewsDaily noted. Most carriers lock their phones to prevent them from running on competitors’ networks. Starting next week, U.S. consumers will no longer legally be allowed to unlock their carrier-locked devices without permission, though some smartphones such as Verizon’s iPhone 5 and the Nexus 4 are unlocked to begin with.
So... I pay $300 for a piece of equipment and it is illegal for me to modify it to my liking?!??!! I have yet to root my Note II. I will purposely wait for it to be illegal before rooting it.

Then... I'm pulling the tags off of my mattress & pillows. The Govt has no business telling me what I can and can't do with any of my property if I'm not causing harm to another.

Hi, welcome to America! It's the best!

we are under control

There isn't much benefit to unlocking a GSM phone.

If you're sick of dealing with T-Mobile or AT&T, just order the compatible SIM from Straight Talk and pay $50/mo. No unlocking necessary and it is the EXACT same network.

I've been with them since July. No issues.

congress is for sale. We get to vote for ppl who we are told to vote for. 'Murica.

Considering I don't take frequent global trips, I don't care.

Once your contract is up can't you go to the carrier and have them unlock it? At least I think AT&T does that.

I don't think this part matters. If you are rooting your phone, you are assuming all responsibility anyway. Factory warranty is voided once you root it.

We need to get Anonymous on this...

The reasoning behind it is that Note II costs more than $300. The phone companies subsidize your hardware in exchange for long term contracts.

Gizmodo had a good article on this. The previous rulings were in favor of unlocking because there wasn't much competition. Now that there is prepaid with 4G phones, all the companies offering multiple types of phones, etc they felt jailbreaking no longer needed to be protected.

Yes, if they agree to it. You just have to have permission to unlock phones now.

KC native 01-26-2013 02:53 PM

Also, not saying I agree with it, but I understand how the decision was made.

demonhero 01-26-2013 03:11 PM

Haha good job voting for big government. Government can kiss my ballsack, because I'm not paying somebody to unlock my phone when I can do it for free online. I work for a living and don't have the option for the Obama phone.

jiveturkey 01-26-2013 03:42 PM

Just buy an unlocked phone direct from Google.

Or sign a contract and then bitch about he terms.
