It was a common thought that the Kansas City Chiefs needed help at the wide receiver position heading into the draft. There were rumors about potential interest in a couple of the top WRs that went in round one but by the end of the third round, many were saying, maybe the Chiefs just don't see WR as a need.

Enter Demarcus Robinson, with the Chiefs last of three fourth round picks. Most NFL draft experts believe that Robinson was an early-round talent on the field with great hands and run-after-the-catch ability. After watching all available games on Draft Breakdown, I can confirm Robinson is a fun player to watch and compares favorably to other WRs I've reviewed.

So, why didn't he get drafted earlier? Demarcus had some legitimate off-field concerns -- Perhaps overshadowed by another Chiefs draft pick in this regard -- that likely had him much lower on team's draft boards than his talent would indicate. Robinson was suspended four times while at Florida, and completed rehab for marijuana use.

The measurables
6'1" 203 pounds, 33" arms, 9 1/2" hands

His pro day results were solid, but not as spectacular as many predicted prior to the draft (this may also have been a factor in his being available in round four): 4.59 40-yard dash, 4.21 short shuttle, 6.69 3-cone, 33 1/2" vertical and 10'3" broad jump.

How does he fit with Chiefs
Again, the Chiefs were clearly looking to upgrade at wide receiver again this offseason. They added Rod Streater and Mike Williams on one year deals in free agency before investing the fourth round pick in Robinson.

Robinson will likely compete with Chris Conley for the WR2 of the future, once each has fully grown into the offensive playbook. Demarcus Robinson is what I would consider the classic Andy Reid WR. He can line up inside our outside, but I certainly think he's more of an outside receiver. He has great hands and has shown the ability to run crisp routes.

Where he really excels is yards after the catch. He was featured on WR screens and quick outs in order to get the ball in his hands in space. He routinely makes defenders miss, and breaks tackles. He can get up the sideline for big chunks of yardage on the short passes that the Chiefs have been known for. He can also go up and get the ball in spectacular fashion when they take a shot deep.

Willing blocker with good hand placement and foot movement

Ran good routes, with crisp breaks

Fought for extra yards, has YAC for days

Noticed him running comeback, screen, out and slant routes credited with six catches, 79 yards with a long of 25, and a 13.2 average

Scored on a deep post route

Used him as a decoy on the end around

Had a highlight reel catch with one hand on the sideline. Shows excellent body control, hand eye coordination


Good football speed -- appears to play faster than his 40 time

They tried to get him the ball quick and let him run, but they did target him deep, and on a two point conversion

Not overly physical -- got out-muscled at times

Credited with eight catches, 98 yards with a TD and a long of 36, and a 12.3 average

Took a screen for good yardage to open the game

Broke a slant for 40 yards

Carries the ball in one hand quite often -- ball security could become an issue at the next level

missed a couple of blocks

Took the hand around and threw a deep pass- but it was off target and nearly picked

Shows the ability to get his feet down on the sidelines

Fumbled once when fighting for extra yardage -- surrounded by SIX defenders, was still carrying ball in one hand

Made a defender look silly on more than one occasion with a quick change of direction

2014 vs Kentucky

First play was a quick pass, Robinson turned it in to a big gane

Good speed, but not elite

Competes for the ball, but got out-fought a couple of times

Again, caught a five yard pass, juked a defender out of his shoes and turned it into a big gain up the sideline

QB play was suspect at best -- some very poorly thrown balls

Some plays he looked a bit lost or disinterested when blocking... others, he fought through the whistle

Made something out of a broken route: slipped in his break, pass hits the defender in the chest, bounces up, Robinson catches it and ran 20 yds down the field

Another quick out with a nice run after

Ran a nifty route for a TD: set his man up on the inside, accelerated quickly to the outside, defender didn't go with him ... easy catch for six

caught a TD in OT to tie the game on a fade route

Then had the game winning TD go through his hands (might have been tipped by a defender, as the QB was VERY late with the pass)

Credited with 15 catches, 216 yards with two TD, and a 14.4 avg

Where he wins
Played effectively in the slot and at outside WR

Clean, crisp route runner

Great hands -- reliable pass catcher

Elite run after the catch ability -- consistently gains extra yardage

Very good body control and coordination -- helps in making highlight reels and toe-tap catches on the sidelines

Very good speed

Where he doesn't win
Ball security -- tends to carry the football in one hand away from his body, could lead to more fumbles

Inconsistent as a blocker -- showed he CAN do it, just doesn't always get it done

Can get pushed around at times on contested passes

While he gains extra yardage, may lack that extra gear or breakaway speed to go the distance

As a Gator and Chiefs fan I got excited about this pick. Dude has all the talent there just needs to continue stay away from the weed. Also he played with some shitty Qb's while at Florida.

Here's a question for Gator fans and draftniks:

Is Robinson a WR that can get open quickly, right away? Because I don't know what the point in drafting a go-up-and-get-it WR with Alex Smith at QB. Same thing with Mike Williams.

Dakc has reasonable takes made it seem like this guy is a JAG. Dorsey got a lot off lottery tickets this off season 1 or 2 will probably hit but he won't be 1 of them.

Yes he can since the offenses he was in until his final year were dink and dunk and passes 1-2 yards off the LoS. He's def used to those type of plays.

I just can't get over the "suspended four times" thing. What is the limit at Florida?

Robinson is far from JAG. It is all about his head. I was surprised by his 40 time not being lower, but he does a great job running routes, getting open, attacking the ball in the air, and running after the catch. When he was on the field, he was great. I thought he would be the best Gator WR we have had since Harvin honestly.

He did himself a disservice leaving early for the draft, but he felt he was being faded out and is still immature. His suspensions were apparently for pot and being late to meetings. No legal trouble that I remember.

If he takes his new job seriously, he could easily be a #2, #3 receiver for us for a very long time and be an excellent draft pick steal.

That's just ignorant. Robinson has the upside of a #1 WR, and there's no reason to just write him off. I don't give a shit what "Dakc" has said.

The only reason I'm okay with it is because they were all 4 when he was 18, I believe, and he didn't have a single reoccurrence after he went to rehab. The fact they didn't cut him speaks to his value/potential.

I'd be way more nervous if this was an earlier pick, but the last of three 4ths, I'm okay with it.

Well, a few things....
The guy looks like the second coming of Josh Gordon.

At the same time, I really wish football would quit trying to play moral police when it comes to non performance enhancing substances. In terms of playing football, I'm not worried if a guy smokes a little weed.

He was suspended three times as a FRESHMAN and hasn't tested positive even once since he entered rehab that year.

Weed is a non-starter.

That said, if he pushes Conley for the #2 spot, Conley sucks.

Conley IMO is a guy that's going to improve a little each year and peak in years 3-8 where Robinson is a guy that can come in and run a limited set of plays and add explosiveness to them fairly quickly...but might not have quite as much top end potential as Conley, due to raw speed.

I don't think it would be an indictment on Conley if Robinson gets more snaps than him in 2016.

I disagree.

Not only is Conley bigger, faster and more physically gifted than Robinson, Dorsey also traded up for him.

If a 4th round WR, who most likely wouldn't have been drafted by the Chiefs had it not been for their trade back in the 2016 draft, gets more snaps than Conley this season, then he may never pan out.
