I want to see this.

People nit pick his politics in his films but he's consistently had themes dealing with our progress in technology combined with our lack of progress in morality/ethics.

Our toys evolving faster than we are...

Of the two "Hugh Jackman in a movie about robots" movies, this one looks like the one to see... might end up catching this on a matinee soon.

I pay exactly O attention to rotten tomatoes, they're always trashing movies I enjoyed. Most of their reviewers are some of the most pretentious douchebags I've ever had the displeasure of reading.

Third Eye 03-05-2015 07:45 PM

It's funny that in every review I read, Ninja and Yolandi seem to be the highlights.

So you don't value reviews at all?

That's all rotten tomatoes is: the average of all the professional reviews printed in newspapers/online.

Deberg_1990 03-05-2015 09:00 PM

This guys career has gone south quick. If he screws up the Alien franchise, it's probably over for him.

Elysium got decent reviews and made $286 million.

Depending on the money Chappie makes I think he's going to be making movies for awhile.

Movie critics annoy the hell out of me, for every time they're right, they're wrong two other times IMO.

I've read plenty of fairly scathing reviews about awesome flicks like Birdman and Interstellar, just to name two recent examples... movie critics like the smell of their own shit.

Both were reviewed at above 70 percent.

While I want to see Chappie, it doesn't bode well that so many people dislike it.

I found that early March releases tend to be the case of studios not knowing what to do with a movie. Like 300 or Watchmen.

From what I have found, it sounds like everyone wanted this to be a live version of the Iron Giant, but it is anything but.

Don't forget the audience score. If the two are both high, it's a must-see.

Don't read the reviews, just look at the average scores. If the reviewers score it low but audience scores it high, it's probably "fun" but not groundbreaking or original. If both score it low, at least wait for Redbox or Netflix. If critics score it high but audience scores it low, it's an art flick - if you like that kind of movie, watch it; if not, pass.

If anything, I'd put more weight in the audience score.

Critics are too often guilty of snobbery, like they almost dont feel like they're doing their jobs if they dont say something bad about almost anything... they're the bigshot Broadway critic from Birdman, they're the same kind of people that kept KISS from the rock hall of fame for so long, etc.

IMO.

I'm a recovering critic, so I'm probably biased. The problem, as I see it, is knowledge and studying. The more you know, the more problems you see.

I understand where you're coming from.

But Roger Ebert wrote several Russ Meyer movies, so they're all hypocrites to some degree is what I'm saying. Anyway, I have rarely used critical acclaim to decide which movies I see... if the subject matter and trailer looks good, chances are I'm going to like it.

I used to do fairly in-depth reviews, but haven't in a long time. And frankly, I don't go to the movies that often anymore. By the time I'd be reviewing, it'd be a rental at Redbox. Is that even that useful?

Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver and.....Die Antwoord!?

Saw it over the weekend... Thought it was pretty good. Character I liked least of all was surprisingly Hugh Jackman. Overplayed his part a bit in my opinion. I had fairly low expectations going in because I didn't love District 9, but Chappie was a good flick. Worth the money. Had no idea that the blonde and her thug boyfriend in the movie were "musicians". They turned in some decent performances for not being actors. You have to overlook some very shotty security practices from the futuristic police department for the story to be at all believable (as much as this sort of sci-fi show can be believable) but if you can't do that, you probably weren't going to like it anyway.

Fire Me Boy! 03-09-2015 04:45 PM

You have a very loose definition of the word "musician."

I do indeed. What is funny, is the movie rolls credit to a song that I just thought was awful. As I was walking out with my wife, I sarcastically said I was going to rush home and download the song. Now I think that it was probably a song from "Mama" and "Ninja" from the movie.
