And I'm probably way behind the times here, but I just watched all 7 seasons of The Shield over the Fall/Winter. Loved it.

That's too simplistic, I think. The Wire is a show about the American city -- a place where, the show argues, an individual human life is made every day by various institutions to be worth less and less.
