To follow up, she ran into the MOST trouble while surfing "girly" sites (stuff I would imagine the typical Apple user would surf :D) Things like Hermes.com and louisvuitton.com Not sure if it was those exact sites but you get the idea of what kind of sites I am talking about... I hope those aren't in your bookmarks too :p

Here is the setting that makes the YouTube app suck...

Syndication
Yes, make this video available on mobile phones and TV. Note, the video may not be available on all devices due to copyright or licensing issues.

Just clicking this setting DOES NOT mean the video will be available to the APP, if ANY possible copyright issues are present, YouTube defaults to NOT showing it or allowing it to show up in mobile search results even.

I could see this changing for tablets over time (if it hasn't already) but last time I played with an iPad, this KILLED the functionality of the app.

So either A) you are missing out on a ton of content or B)the APP and YouTube policy have caught up and made changes since December.

Wow.

What an amazing level of Apple hate.

It's pretty simple, folks. If you don't like it, don't buy it.

No, I'm just saying that of all these websurfing issues that are apparently out there, I run into virtually none of them.

FWIW, my wife does all of her online shopping on her iPad. No complaints from her about it.

I don't have the g/f anymore so I can't check to see what's current... but I can find the exact setting that is causing the issue if you want.
It got the second one, but not the 1st or the 3rd. That's pretty much the good thing about YouTube, though... there's usually more than one copy of something online.

As for those websites, they have HTML versions (I just checked).

If I am, I've yet to find out.

Look, again, I'm not saying that the iPad is perfect. FAR from it. I just think a lot of the issues that people bring up about it all the time are pretty overblown.

It IS ridiculous that I can't put the latest version of Flash on it, though. It runs pretty well from what I can see. Still not perfect, though...

I still can't get this video to work on my Win 7 machine:

As for proof, I will have to find a specific video.. I just picked an obscure song that I know I tried with her iPad back in December and didn't pull up any "real" results.. yeah you had the crappy covers and such but not the actual video.

Probably not the best place for it, but I'll go ahead:

Looking at cutting our cable/satellite. I can get a wireless adapter for my blu-ray play that allows it to play youtube and netflix. I can also get a Apple TV for about the same price (I'm not really looking to spend more than $100 on this).

What else is out there that might be superior and about the same cost?

Look at the Roku box. It's awesome.

I'm not a big fan of any of them but it looks (based on specs) that Google TV is the most usable... it allows apps and more... but it is also much pricier.. $300 unless you buy a TV with it built in.

For me, getting 1/3 of the videos I may want is just not good enough. Yes, it's fine for finding a Rick Astley video... but I use YouTube to find obscure things that I don't already have a copy of... often there is only one or two versions and neither works on a mobile app.

Most iPad users have no clue that they are missing out on a massive amount of video, because they will just assume that a given video that shows no search results is not on YouTube at all...

I couldn't own an iPad because after the 4th or 5th time of that crap I would have thrown it through a f-ing wall.

Silock 04-09-2011 01:00 PM

I dunno. I just don't know how many iPad owners are looking for videos like that. I still found the exact video that you were looking for through a random search (it was the first result, in fact).

And it's not 1/3rd of the video if you find one, and they're all three the same thing.

I've never not been able to find a video on YouTube. Plus, it's not like YouTube is the only option. Vimeo and other video services provide HTML5 compatible video.

I read this to say that you've already got personal copies of all the important Rick Astley videos.
