Plasti Dip

Has anyone plasti-dipped anything on their cars? If so, how did it go?

bigjosh 02-23-2017 08:42 PM

I did my wheels once. It goes on easy and looks decent for a little while. It is a bitch to get off though.

Maybe we should Plasti-dip Lewdog.

Don't dip your testicles. Even if they may be freshly shaven.

I have not but my nephew and a couple of their friends have done wheels and other parts. Your surface better be very very clean. When it gets a nick that goes through the dip you need to peal it off and do it again. It is "cheaper" than getting things done the "proper" way but it requires a lot of work in that you have to redo the process every once in a while.

The Plasti-Dip won't stand up to anything. You are better off with paint/powder coating.

I did it to a couple of parts on my bike that I wanted blacked out. It looks ok for a little while and then chips off. But you can just peel it and plasti-derp again anytime you want.

For the bars and mirror posts and such it was fine. For wheels and stuff it'll look like crap before long.

Cheap and reversible though.

Yes, I did the wheels and grille on my saab. It looked great, but you have totake care of the wheels because the dip can be delicate. The new colors they have look great...theres a lot more than flat black now. I used metallic gloss anthracite on my wheels.

Some people even paint the entire car wit it. Check out dipyourcar.com.

Yes, prep is everything. Any grease, dirt, or wetness will make the stuff start to peel there first. On my wheels, it lasted for about a year before I had to redo it. It started peeling around the edge of the rim area where it meets the tire.

Also, gasoline melts it so be careful at the gas station or in your garage. I was opening the gas can to put gas in my lawn mower and I accidentally splashed a bit on my car wheel. It melted a hole in the dip and I had to redo that wheel. :cuss:

The wheels were a pain to clean because I was always worried about the dip peeling up. My powdercoated wheels on my new car are much superior.

However, the dip on my grille was incredibly durable. It lasted about 4 years (until I sold my car) with 0 redos required.

It's nice that you blurred your "Euro" license plate on one of the pics....

It's because the pics were taken at different times. The blurred pic was used to post on autotrader.com.

The car is sold now and I don't care anymore so I didn't bother to blur it.

Cadillac ATS. I like it better than the Saab in almost every way except for the lack of uniqueness. I got comments from my Saab all the time from strangers while I was out.

I miss it too, but it was getting old-ish and I didn't feel like starting up the maintenance and repairs that were on the horizon.
