The most interesting part of the Brady deal is that it allows NE to sign Welker at a cap hit, for 2013, that is almost perfectly even with the savings that Brady's extension just granted them ($8 mil for '13).
Before Brady's extension, the Pats were $15 million under the cap; and Brady's original cap hit for '13 was at $21 million-and-change. Now? That 2013 cap number is down to $13.8 mil for 2013. Saving of roughly $8 mil. Ah, so now the Pats are 23 million under the cap, right? Well, they are being rumored to sign Welker for $8 million per year; so the Pats will once again be $15 million under the cap....
Of course, the above is under the assumption that the Welker contract rumors are true (5 yrs, at $8 mil per yr) But it's pretty fair to say Brady took this hometown discount so he could keep Welker; so I'm guessing it's pretty accurate.
