Study: Porn Stars Aren’t “Damaged” by Their Profession
A report finds adult actresses are happier than the rest of us -- and that being naked might lead to self-esteem. November 28, 2012 | A common stereotype of a female porn star is an insecure, sexually abused, mentally ill and/or drug-addled woman. It’s one supported by anecdotes (most memorably by Linda Lovelace’s harrowing autobiography) and rhetoric (the feminist scholar Catharine MacKinnon went so far as to claim that all porn actresses were sexually abused as children). But as for actual research? Eh, not so much. Now, a new study claims to have debunked this truism, which is known as the “damaged goods hypothesis.” Some performers were amused by the news. “As a happy, healthy female porn performer, my reaction is: thanks, science, thanks so much for proving I am real,” says writer and porn performer Lorelei Lee in an email. On a similar note, porn actress Dylan Ryan tells me, “It’s about time that research catches up to the realities for a great many women who perform in porn,” she says in an email. “It’s important to me as a performer that the conversation evolve and develop to make space for the (as in any community and population) diversity of experiences, personalities and lifestyles of porn performers.” Adult actress and director Kimberly Kane took a different tack. “I’ve found that everyone is damaged no matter what line of work they’re in,” she says. Researchers compared self-reports from a group of nearly 200 porn actresses to those of women outside the industry who were similar in age, ethnicity and marital status. Not only did the report show no higher incidence of child sexual abuse or psychological problems among female performers, but it actually found that pornsters had higher levels of self-esteem and sexual satisfaction.... http://www.alternet.org/sex-amp-rela...eir-profession |
Now put that in your mouth and suck it hatorade drinkers!

I've come across some "fisting" videos where the porn stars must have, at least, been temporarily damaged.

The gaping hole in this is the definition of "star".

Lol...case studies. They aren't science.
And porn whoring will never be an honorable trade. |

As a result of this, the number of fathers who want their daughters to work in porn is still zero. Contrastingly, the number of fathers who want other people's daughters to work in porn is an all time high.

This might be the best post i've read on here in the time since I registered. |

I can tell you for a fact that Kimberly Kane has very high self-esteem.
It's kind of weird: Porn chicks aren't like strippers. Sure, I've met a few that were somewhat damaged but these girls see themselves as "Stars". Most make very good money and surprisingly (or maybe not), most that I've met own homes, cars, etc. |

I watched some of the AVN awards late last year. They were doing their version of "The Red Carpet". I figured there would at least be one or two people who seemed somewhat normal, but no. Every chick was way out there, and the dudes were just flat creepy. That is one f-d up industry, I don't care what anyone says.

small sample size is small.
Also, what about the ones that never make it to stardom? If they're being exlcuded then this means nothing. |
And what happens when they hit 35?

I guess Hamas wins this thread.

The thing I don't understand is, if some of these men and women get into porn because they think there isn't a better option, i.e. post secondary education. Then once they've "made it" in the industry go back to school and get a freaking degree so they aren't doing that crap in their 40s and 50s. Geeeez.

They were damaged well before.

The self confidence thing has to be true. No way can you perform sex acts on camera in front of people and to be sold to the public, without being at least a wee bit confident.
I've had girls who were afraid to get nasty unless the lights were all turned off. |
and who will be first to marry one of these porn star women?

I see what you did there. |

shockingo:-)

if you guys have Netflix streaming, check out "Life After Porn" (or something to that effect). It was really interesting.
|
I'm sure many of them are well "adjusted"...it takes a lot of dexterity for a chick to have four johnsons inserted simultaneously.
|
I simply refuse to believe that most women who've had any kind of lengthy career in porn, are capable of having a normal and healthy relationship.
SOMETHING is bound to get twisted in their minds after living that life, in the documentary Dayze mentions, the only one of them i would consider "readjusted" was the one who went on to become a bail bondswoman/bounty hunter. The rest of them were all ****ed up in one way or another... who wants to marry Houston, you know, the chick who broke Jasmine St. Clairs record by doing the 500 man gangbang? Thats right, nobody. |

one of the gals in the documentary was Asia Carerra etc; she seemed like she was pretty normal / had grown up, and probably regretted her decision to do it.
|
and Randy West is a creepy old man.
|
They didn't really say they weren't damaged, just that they were no worse off than other people of the same age and ethnicity. Which could mean that the latest generation is really ****ed up.
|
Ray Lewis can put his hands on them and heal them of all wrong doing.

Have you watched "Whore's Glory"? Now THAT is interesting. Documentary on prostitution in Thailand, Bangladesh (iirc) and Mexico. Really well made piece. |

Netflix sucks. |

I watched it after a night of beers and gaming. maybe I should watch it sober. |

I think i tried watching "life after Porn" right after "Whore's Glory" and it felt like "life after" just came off as bland and uninteresting. It Might just be because "Whore's Glory" was a much more interesting, better produced documentary. Whore's Glory is about the common 3rd world type street ho. It reminds me of my childhood (i spent a portion of it around street walkers) and it gives an in depth look about how the trade works. There is a scene in Mexico that shows the entire transaction, including the ****ing. Poor dude got jewed. Chick made him stop and sent him on his way because he couldn't cum in the allotted time. It's really well made and I would highly suggest it. Favorite quote (Brothel in Thailand): One girl tells another girl who just got picked up by a john, "I Hope he's too big for you!" |
interesting. is that on Netflix?
I'll pretty much any documentary on any suject. |

I'm not certain that most people aren't in careers that they have few other choices "than." I'm neutral on the subject really. I think a lot of self-proclaimed religious people will try to keep the pressure on that community for a long time to come because it's not their choice, and the industry will keep on keeping on anyway. And after they get done condeming the other group for being different they'll run off to pornhub on their smart phone and make a mess. Nothing against religious people, I'm just saying that I think people who don't just live and let live are assholes IMO.

They believe what they're doing is just fine. It's part of their lifestyle. It's not like these women (or men) are going to suddenly "wake up" 20 years later and say "Wow, I should have gotten a "real" job" and not ****ed on film". It's a completely different mindset. |

Many of the Vegas strippers are working the system. They get that they'll make tons of dough for showing their assets. The smartest strippers I've known KNOW it's a game, treat the men as customers and never socialize with them after hours or at any point in time. It's a means to an end. The problem is that 95% of all strippers elsewhere are the exact opposite. |
Quote:
They'll be like Randy West living all alone in his 60's, unable to get a "normal" person to take a chance on them. |

There are a lot of people in this world that just aren't hung up on sex. ****ing on film is no big deal to many, many people and hasn't stopped people or people in that business from having kids, being married, etc. Porn is mainstream. There's less of a stigma involved than there was 20, 30 or 40 years ago when it was "dark" and "taboo". |
Quote:
The only positive (and it's a big one) is that they won't base a relationship off of sex. Good or bad they'll only stick with someone because they care about them. Quote:

People date strippers and ex-strippers all the time. That chick from "cathouse" (I think that's the name) married the head guy and is essentially in a management position of the brothel. She's also rich. (An unusual example, but an example) |
Quote:
And who are we to judge anyway? What's really 'normal'? Who is actually 'normal'? I'd be willing to bet a lot of these chicks will go on to live happier lives than many people reading this thread right now. |

Her idea of what went into a loving relationship was way outta whack, she figured that as long as she was giving you all you could handle, that was enough... beyond that she was a moneygrubbing liar and cheater. Anyway, i guess my bottom line is that i'd never again try to put something together with someone who'd worked in the sex industry in any capacity whatsoever. |
Quote:
These women that are "Porn Stars", like Sunny Leone, Jill Kelly, Jenna Jamison, Kimberly Kane, so on and so forth truly see themselves as "International Stars". Their movies make millions, their work is seen worldwide and in nearly every way, they truly are "Stars". That's a different stratosphere than the chick working at the local strip club to support her kids because her Baby Daddy ran off or because she was sexually abused as a child. |
Quote:
Its hard to imagine being in a relationship with an active one though, lol, "bye hun, i'm off to the triple penetration gangbang, dont wait up!" |
I wonder how much Sasha Grey makes in a year.
or Tori Black. |

In the defense of pornstars having an fulfilling life after stardom, many of them have kids to focus on. In fact, some of those kids were prenatal co-stars in the films that will pay for their tuition one day.
