If you think you got hit with the LiDAR at north of 100, just keep driving until they catch you.

If you guys have not drove the new automatic 8's that are out there.......you are missing out. It is faster than a manual and shifts like a manual. Copied and pasted from another site............

I am really amazed with my (the) new A8 transmission I have a 2015 R/T 5.7. I am somewhat qualified to make these statements as I have owned and do own many cars, some with manual transmission and some with Autos. I have a 09 Viper ,as example with a Manual transmission and an Auto C6 Corvette among current cars. I even have owned new auto Mustang GTs and a manual GT500 recently so my perspective is pretty broad. Qualifier: I have not recently driven a 2008-2014 auto challenger so those trannies may also behave like the 2015 but with 3 less gears, I just cant remember. So here are a some of my opinions on this unique, almost hybrid transmission in the 2015 Challenger. So for current owners, and those who are considering a A8 here is my list of what I absolutely love about the new A8. At this point I have not found a downside to the A8 so don't look for those comments below. So if your torn between the 2 choices on a new buy, don't be afraid to purchase a 2015 Challenger with an auto 8 speed transmission, here's why:
1) I forget I am driving a automatic. It feels and behaves almost like a manual transmission in many ways. It even down shifts smoothly, raises RPMs and brakes the car when I let off the gas. This saves brake wear and brake dust clean off and I love the engine sounds and feels in touch as much during slow down as accelerating. note: I have never driven a auto that actually down shifts and raises RPMs as if down shifting a manual. Love this feature 100 percent.
2) Manual mode on the floor is perfect. The manual mode is the best engineered system I have used. I would never crave additional paddle shifters on my R/T. The handle is also engineered dang near perfect and is hard to let go of for comfort and great engineering and ergos,
3) Down shifting in manual mode. The manual mode down shifts by itself when slowing if I don't shift down myself. I choose if I want to and it seems instinctive if I ignore the manual down shifts.( other transmissions just go into glide or coast mode) or the ratio of downshifts is so closely matched to the rpm it seems like coast mode.
4) In touch. I still feel very much in touch with the engine even though its a automatic. Its just a solid connection to the entire drive train and not a mushy washing machine feel like many other automatics. Yep the Auto Vette is fine during a tromp down but on slowdown ya know its an auto. I have read a few complaints about downshifting of the A8 driving them nuts but I appreciate it to the max.
5) Responsive and solid feeling always. The reason people buy manuals is to feel connected to the engine and I like that also, but this transmission is an amazing compromise that keeps you connected but one that I can go into lazy mode with without feeling like I am driving a slushy auto. But twitch the accelerator and it is fast to respond with no jerky clunking or delay, its just raw torque, and right now. Even coupled with the smaller 5.7 Hemi this combo rocks.
I can only believe it gets better with a larger engine and the A8.
6) Smooth and fast. It shifts smooth and fast on WOT and when doing spirited driving or slow lazy starts. And most know the A8 is a bit faster at the strip/LOL

I congratulate Dodge on building an amazing car and a auto transmission that is a vast improvement over your competition and one that is as close to a manual as it ever has in automotive history.http://www.challengertalk.com/forums...s/thumbsup.gif

Be great to hear other member thoughts and comments on what you also appreciate about the A8 on their R/T Challenger or other models and engine size combos. and years other than the 2015
Shift on... Goodbar

Those types of transmissions have come a long way. A manual is still more fun (despite being slower).

What are my better options? We're looking at sticking around the $20-$25k price range.

But a hot hatch would be perfect. A back seat for your kids and a hatch area for the ones you don't care about.

Because the WRX Sti is $45k. The Focus is a great platform and will have better numbers than the Lesbaru for about $10k less than the lesbaru.

They havent given us any real information yet. We have a Ford rep that comes and does training every month or two im going to bombard him next time he gets here. I doubt there will be a wait list like its the Ford GT or a gt350r mustang or something.

It will be comparably small production etc but im hoping we will be able to get whatever.

rtmike 03-17-2015 02:48 PM

As far as those wagons go, you could always put your kids in the booster seats on back seat & your brothers kids in back. I know I sure like mine. I can throw my wheelchair in the back & then grab hold of the top edge of car to shuffle my way to the drivers door.

I like just about all makes from the muscle car era. Not so much with today's rigs. Also happen to favor the Pentastar (Mopar) products.
It seems as though the merge with Fiat has really helped. First thing they did was rework all the cheap, plastic feel interiors. They've also started slowly eliminating the cross hair grills.
There's a new special edition Ram pick up without the cross hair too.

Miata for best driving feel, fun factor, just have to put up with the jokes. Mustang for straight line speed a little more practicality. I would vote Miata, but it depends on the Mustang. If you look hard, many Mach 1 Stangs from the 2000's can be had for under 10K in good condition.

What are your plans for it?
Weekend, sunny day cruiser you just want to top of with gas and drive: Miata.
Plan on wrenching on it, slowly building it as you have money: Mustang.
Though if your plan is the later I would suggest something GM (Camaro, Nova, Chevelle) just because on a bang per buck basis it's hard to beat a small block Chevy.

Silock 03-17-2015 05:58 PM

I'm half tempted to have you call my dad.

I'm quarter tempted to move back in with mom and dad and call you myself.

My first car was a frame off 69 SS, we transplanted with a block up restoed 283 [pops thought I needed a HP restriction]. He's in the middle of a total resto of the 69 SS LT1 he bought new as a young man.

He has all the tools and hoists and English wheels and welding equipment.

Only thing we haven't taken on is upholstery. I put lightly used Recaros in mine. Though, I did custom install new carpet.

Are you talking mostly body work, interior, systems, drivetrain or the whole shebang?

I want to pick up a project car. Under $10k. Debating between a Miata and a Rustang.

I've got a 99 Cobra I never drive. What are you looking for?

Miata for best driving feel, fun factor, just have to put up with the jokes. Mustang for straight line speed a little more practicality. I would vote Miata, but it depends on the Mustang. If you look hard, many Mach 1 Stangs from the 2000's can be had for under 10K in good condition.

Yeah, it would definitely be a late model Mustang. Do the new body styles still have the 4.6? I've heard that engine is pretty worthless unless you go FI.

I've had a Miata before and would be happy with one, but only because it was fun to drive around on curvy roads. Those don't really exist here in KS, so I'm tempted to shy away from it.

It needs the whole treatment, if it's even salvageable. My parents bought the car in 72 when they got married. Drove it for a few years, then it sat in a garage rusting until I turned 16. They gave it to me and I drove it for a few years, but it was too unreliable to keep, so it's been sitting in their garage for the last 15 years.

It was rusting back in the 90s when I drove it. It had a hole in the trunk floor back then and rust on the roof. I don't even want to imagine where all the rust is that I can't even see. I don't know how to repair that kind of damage.

The interior is also bad, but that's the easy stuff. Drivetrain is probably all rusted, and I know it doesn't have the original engine anymore. I'd definitely upgrade the transmission and rearend. It's an automatic with a 2.73 rear. Yuck.

But it's always been my dad's dream to someday restore it. He just doesn't have the time or energy to do it, and I don't have the funds.

It's a stock motor car with a full Griggs Racing GR40 setup. Let me see if I can dig up some pics.
