Why did Gale Sayers spurn the Chiefs in 1965?

This has probably been a topic of a thread before, but I've not seen it. I was thinking about Sayers yesterday... and wondering why he didn't come to KC?

Quote:

Kansas City made an aggressive offer for Sayers, and wooed him hard to join their team. He summarized the package Chicago offered him as "$4.95 and a carton of Cokes", but spurned the Chiefs to sign with the Bears.
This was before the first Superbowl... and considering that Gale made ZERO championship games, and KC went to 2 during his career... I'd say he made the wrong choice.

Especially, when you consider that he went to KU.

We offered him $2.95 and a bottle of Coke

That's what the Bell brothers got, 2 bucks and some coke.

Kansas City was a more racist city than Chicago at that time.

Spott 11-23-2012 11:23 AM

Probably because the NFL was viewed as the superior league to the upstart AFL.

He figured being black would've hurt him here and Chicago would've helped. Which is funny him going to KU and all already.

Precisely. Which like I said doesn't make sense considering his success at KU and the good time he had while here in the Midwest.

This.

If you have a chance to be a star in the NFL, you take it.

That's complete and utter bullshit. The Chiefs made their name drafting black players from black schools in the 1960s. Sayers was from Nebraska and played at KU. Was Chicago a racism island? Hardly! For Sayers it was about playing in the established league rather than an upstart.

Buck Buchanan, Willie Lanier, Bobby Bell, Curly Culp, Otis Taylor... among others played here and loved it. In fact, most of them made KC their home and are still active in the community.

He got offended when Carl cussed at him so he walked out and signed with the Bears the next day.

Chiefspants 11-23-2012 01:05 PM

If you're a top prospect and offered a full ride to be a starter at Tulane but a partial full ride to be a starter at Alabama, where do you go?

Brock 11-23-2012 01:06 PM

Because the AFL was a junior league at the time.

Tribal Warfare 11-23-2012 01:11 PM

He said himself that he thought that the AFL would collapse and cease to exist in a few years when he was drafted so he picked Chicago.

BigMeatballDave 11-23-2012 01:30 PM

Further proof that most players don't know shit.
