XBox 360 vs. PS3

With the $200 holiday bundles. PS3 with Infamous series and Uncharted 1 & 2 or XBox 360 with Forza and Skyrim. I'm trying to decide between a new XBox 360 or a PS3. I'm looking for opinions of each.

Thanks!

007 11-16-2012 09:48 PM

depends on what you are using it for? Is it just about the games? Do you play online at all? Does having bluray important to you?

Ceej 11-16-2012 09:50 PM

All the cool, l337 fun people have a 360.

007 11-16-2012 10:01 PM

all the people that want the most for their money have the PS3.

UteChief 11-16-2012 10:02 PM

I have a blu-ray player. I don't game a bunch but I enjoy the Call of Duty series online.

If you don't mind paying for the online then I would go with the xbox because of the larger CoD community over there.

because you can't touch this. Don't forget that we have all 3 consoles. I just prefer the PS3 as it definitely offers the most bang for the buck.

Oh, the exclusives on the PS3 blow xbox out of the water.

RustShack 11-16-2012 10:10 PM

The one and only thing I like more about the xbox is I have more friends on there to play with... I've kinda gotten out of gaming unless I can play like COD with multiple friends with headsets(well besides a recent Skyrim addiction)

But other than me having more friends on Xbox, I'd personally say PS3 is easily superior... with more people starting to switch to it too.

007 11-16-2012 10:12 PM

I'm not a fan of the new PS3 form factor though. IF you go PS3 try and find the previous model if you can.

This is the never ending debate.

There's no right or wrong answer.

I don't mind shelling out $10/month to play online.

I also have a DVD player with the 360 which works fine. Blu-Ray does nothing for me.

Whats special about PSPlus? I had that free trial and didn't really see anything extra I'd use.

Well, if you had been subscribed from the beginning you would have a shit ton of free games to play as long as you remain a subscriber. To me, it is a much better deal than xbox live.

My biggest peave about xbox is the fact you have to pay for Live just to use any of the streaming services. all of that is free on the PS3.

It's actually $4/month, brah. I need to resubscribe. As soon as I see a $39 deal on it, I'll get on it.

Clearly I need to be on the look out for that too.

I just have $10 withdrawn every month for XBL.

Damn, dude, that's crazy. $49.99 is the regular price for a year sub. That's $4/mo.

360 if you like playing online.

PS3 if you hate yourself.

And they're even cheaper when you look around/call them up.

I call at the end of every 3 months and tell them I'm thinking of canceling. They then give me an extra 3 months at $9.99. A couple of times I've even gotten them to throw in an extra 4th month. I might have end up paying less than $30 a year.

jd1020 11-17-2012 10:32 PM

I'd go with PS3 just for the lack of a subscription for online use. Paying for something like Netflix and then having to pay Xbox to use it is just insanity imo.

Xbox has slightly better graphics, though.

Unsmooth-Moment 11-17-2012 11:33 PM

I have had both for a couple of years. I haven't used my Xbox more than twice in that time period.

Yeah, but no one buys the ps3 exclusives compared to 3rd party titles..

They may be great, but they are such a minority compared to others, or sadly Halo.. Most people still buy PS3 in the US for a Bluray..

Software sales show this as xbox generally leads in most sales also..

As for the OP,

What do your friends have?
If xbox, the live community dwarfs the ps3 users, you can get live for 35bucks for a year if you keep an eye out for deals..

ps3 does have bluray and God of War.. and mp is free, there are other great exclusives..

Unless xbox does something amazing in the next console war, I think playstation walks away with it..

Does it support streaming from a DLNA media server, you mean? Yes, it does.

The XBox can do pretty much everything the PS3 can do (more actually).

The deal breaker for me was having to pay M$ to use Netflix.

Well, the ps3 has bluray. Something xbox will never be able to do.

as far as ease of use, I find the ps3 much easier. the xbox dashboard has become so damn convulted. It is a mess now.

I don't have many BluRay discs so that's really a non-issue for me.

Dead-on about the dashboard. 90% of the clutter on the dashboard is apps you can't use if you're not a Live Gold member.

The PS3 interface is a ****ing nightmare... Ads have really taken over the 360 dashboard but it's still FAR easier to maneuver than the PS3. Shit is tucked away in various places where you wouldn't think they'd be -- example: game saves.
And lets not even talk about game installs and updates... I can't tell you how many times I've purchased a game just to go home and wait 1 hour or more for the game to install.. then update.. then restart... then install.. etc etc. I much prefer the 360 method of updating (usually just a few megabytes)....
And we're not even talking about the horrible download speeds over PSN and the shit layout of their PSN store.

With all that said -- I play my PS3 10 times as much as I do my 360... Just saying.

What? My game saves are two slots above the game I'm playing, in the SAME MENU. Not sure what you mean by this.

Can you elaborate?

The online gaming community seems to be bigger on XBox Live. That's the ONLY reason I can really think of for preferring XBox over PS3.

For me, I don't play online so it's a non-issue. I much prefer the PS3 and don't regret selling my XBox at all.

Bigger community and friendlier, less lag and delay, games seem to run smoother and look nicer on the 360. I still have fun with my PS3 but the online is horrible and to be quite honest, I only got the PS3 for MSG4 guns of the patriots. I really do appreciate PS3 and enjoy it but I feel like for what I play, FPS campaigns, stealth genres and NCAA 13 & Madden 13 online, it doesn't give me the same satisfaction. Even though there is some amazing games on the PS3, I still would rather play Halo 4 campaign with someone or alone then play Uncharted. Uncharted was amazing but then after you beat it, could never go back to it, same with MGS4. Honestly since you're not into online play, I highly recommend Dishonored or Hitman absolution.

Friendly community? Heh, no.

See, I don't play FPS, no longer play Madden or NCAA (thanks EA!), and I don't play online. So you and I are at opposite ends of the spectrum.

The only game I've actually played on both systems is Kingdoms of Amalur and there was pretty much zero difference in graphics or graphic performance.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'm playing Skyrim now and have FarCry 3 and the Uncharted series on my list right now - too many games so little time!

Rugby Thompson 11-20-2012 08:51 AM

Need to pick up FarCry 3 as well, looks amazing and like the GOTY... yeah I was considering trading in Madden 13 for FarCry just because it's so horrible now.

Hey Quik, I think I figured out what you mean.

It's not hard to find the game saves themselves, they're fairly accessible. But I could see where somebody playing several games at once could get overwhelmed by the lack of organization. All of the game saves are jumbled together in one sub-menu. On the XBox, your game saves are organized by their respective game - that doesn't appear to be the case on PS3.

That being said, I only play one game at a time mostly so for me, it's not a big issue.

Personally, I didn't really struggle to find them -- they weren't where I thought they'd be, but I know it's a common complaint where people aren't sure which file to delete or where their data actually is.
It should be accessible from the game shortcut menu (highlighting your game and selecting Triangle).
Again, I own both systems and definitely play my PS3 more -- but both of these systems have an equal number of faults, IMO.... that is... until The Last of Us comes out and makes all other games obsolete.

I'm kidding. I read further down where you aren't an online player - which in that case, I could understand the frustration of having to pay $40/year for a gold acct, then paying for Netflix just to stream Netflix to your console. That would be a waste.

Meh. They are pretty clear about it..... you want to go online, you have to pay to be gold member. They don't expect anyone to spend the money on an Xbox just to watch Netflix....or use whatever app they have. Same with PS3.....they don't expect you to buy a system just to watch Netflix.

The difference is that PS3 doesn't charge to go online, but when/if they do, you can rest assured that Netflix and every other online app will require their version of a gold acct to use it.

The ultimate appeal of the PS3 and XBox (and Microsoft has openly admitted this in interviews, etc.) is that a single box can service ALL of your home entertainment needs. That's why the next generation XBox not only has A/V out, it also has A/V IN.

The problem is that most of us see the all-in-one aspect as a CONVENIENCE and Microsoft seems to think that it's a PRIVELEGE, one you should PAY for. That's a poor view of things from a consumer perspective, but that's to be expected when it comes to M$.

Sure, I understand and I don't disagree with you. Honestly, I'm surprised Sony hasn't gone the same route at this point, but I'd be equally surprised if they didn't at some point. Maybe with their next gen console.

I just personally don't have an issue with paying a little over $8/month for 4 live gold accounts and to be able to use a single device to play games online, purchase movies, use Netflix, etc etc etc. We get our moneys worth and then some, so it's not a big deal to me.

But, if you aren't going to use all of the features provided in a live acct, I fully understand that the cost outweighs the usefulness of it. If I didn't play online, or movies, or Netflix, I wouldn't want to pay for a gold acct just to do something I could get for free with another console.

That's what it boiled down to for me - the ONLY online feature I was using was Netflix and I couldn't justify doubling my Netflix costs that way.

Also, the straw the broke the camel's back was that I bought a game for couch co-op and it didn't work on the 360. On PS3, both accounts are "online" and off you go.

On 360, it required that both of us have a Gold account to play together on the same XBox, in the same room.

I have always felt that an XBOX Live subscription should be per xbox and not per person.

Whoa? What? What game was that? That's completely on the developer and not the Xbox. The vast majority of games can have a guest profile to be used online in matches and when it comes to playing offline on the same TV, you usually don't need one at all. That's so strange.

Does either have the better online service? Less latency?

Rugby Thompson 11-21-2012 01:21 AM

360 has way better online service, just go with that.

Okay, I just picked up a used PS3 with 2 wireless controllers for $110. I need some game recommendations. I don't like COD, or most fps games. Halo is an exception. I don't play online a lot.

So far, I'm getting FIFA 13 and Gran Turismo 5. Madden is out, as is NCAA 13.

Start with Uncharted

Rugby Thompson 11-21-2012 02:24 AM

Assassins creed 3, MGS4, NBA 2K13, Hitman Absolution

I personally started voting with my dollar and not putting up with micro$ofts crap of making me pay for live to use my netflix subscription when every other device in the world offers netflix for free.

I would say overall I liked the 360 better than the ps3 cause I actually played a lot of games on 360 whereas now my ps3 is just a media player.

Uncharted. All of them.

Heavy Rain

Ratchet and Clank Tools of Destruction and Crack in Time - if you like that kind of stuff.

Uncharted series is amazing the first tame, after that i've always ended up selling them. I thought Heavy Rain was horrible, couldn't get into it for some reason, they made a similar one on PS2 if anyone remembers and I thought that was a lot better.

I have never bored of Uncharted. My younger son will play them and need help. When I start helping that is when I get all caught up in it again and can't put it down.

Yeah it's an amazing game for kids, really tests they're knowledge with the puzzles and such. What was you're favorite Uncharted? I thought 2 was amazing and had the best game play although 3 was beautiful and challenging.

Since you mentioned RAC, I HIGHLY reccomend Jak & Daxter HD Collection, not only will you have fun with it but you're son would too and it's an open world platformer made by Naughty Dog, same developers of the Uncharted series. Game is like dirt cheap and comes with 3 games, it's like over 100 hrs of gameplay imo, maybe even more.

This game allowed for that too, but then you can't save your progress (since a Guest account doesn't allow for local storage of saved games on the XBox).

The game was Sacred 2. And yes, the developer is culpable. At the end of the day, Ascaron said that the M$ system was just too difficult to deal with and they couldn't get it to work the way they could on other systems.

Get the God of War saga. They have a $39.99 bundle that includes 1, 2, 3, and the two handheld games. I played all 5 in sequence and they were great.

I finally picked that up about a week ago for $20 new with a gamestop coupon I got in the mail. So far so good.

Amazing games, same with the Metal Gear HD collection.

007 11-21-2012 07:47 AM

MGS4 was the only one I ever liked in that series.

If you're a burnout like me, just be warned that there are some platforming sections in a couple of the games that will make you want to throw your controller!

I ran into one already early on in GoW. The twin snakes or whatever those giant things are and then the huge one.
