To hell with the rushing record. Sacks.
It's completely feasible that either J.J. Watt or Aldon Smith breaks Michael Strahan's NFL record of 22.5 sacks.
Both sit at 19.5. However, Smith is going up against Russell Okung, who has been playing exceptionally well and he doesn't have the luxury of playing next to Justin Smith, while Watt goes up against Minnesota's less than stellar line. Watt might have the record today. Which brings up an rather interesting concept - Watt is poised to break the NFL sack record while playing as a defensive end in a 34 defense. Guys in his position are not supposed to put up numbers like that. Is Watt a reincarnation of Bruce Smith, who himself operated out of a 3/4? Both guys are similarly sized in the same position in a similar defense. |
I almost started this thread about an hour ago.
Then I started thinking about our stellar 5-tech, Tyson Jackson, and decided against it. |
I want to see Watt get the record. To have a guy that plays his position do what he was done this year is absolutely insane. He's having one of the top 3 seasons for a 3-4 DE of all time....Actually, maybe the best season for a 3-4 DE of all time.

It would be nice to see someone pass *Strahan finally. Justifiably actually.

wade phillips defensive coord during both careers, right?
|
I've never seen a defensive lineman attack the QB like JJ Watt. Not since Reggie White, and White was a 4-3 DE.
Never did I imagine the success this kid would have in the NFL. I watched him play at Wisconsin and thought he'd be successful, but holy damn. |
I still remember when Favre let Strahan get the record. Despicable.
