Went down to Bennett Springs this weekend. We never fished in the park, stayed out in the Niangua River the entire time. Friday was slow, cold front moved through, but caught 16 on Saturday and 13 more on Sunday before noon. All in all, a great time!

Damn, really nice haul for this time of year, i'm apparently not the only one getting the fishing bug.

Need to get my reels re-strung.

I hit up lower Taneycomo on Christmas day. I pulled in about 20 rainbows on some brown 1/8 jigs. Most of them were about 12 inchers, but I had one pretty fat 16 inch rainbow.

How do you recommend cleaning crappies and blue gill? I can clean bigger fish, but I have an incredibly hard time cleaning the smaller fish ie. perch, blue gill, crappies etc etc.

We cut off the head, gut them, and descale them. Then fry em up.

Old Dog 03-05-2012 12:27 PM

I find it easier to filet them with an electric knife for some reason. I'll take the whole mess and filet them leaving the rib cage in and then take a regular filet knife to take the ribs out.

With a regular filet knife I seem to screw up damn near as many as I get done properly.

Filleting crappie is a breeze with an electric knife.

That african tigerfish was by far the coolest thing i've ever seen him catch, just a truly gnarly monster.

And the river he caught it on was the most turbulent thing i've ever seen, a 24/7 tsunami.

In many states most of the trout that you fish for are freshly stocked fish - that is the state puts them in the water for people to catch, kill and eat.

Berkley powerbait is a mixture of crack cocaine and methamphetamine to those freshly stocked trout. They love it. It has a play dough consistency. You make a little ball, put it on your hook and catch trout.

The lake where we'll be fishing is private and stocked, but live bait is prohibited and you can't take the fish you catch. There is another lake up the way that is catch and take, though.

How do you fish with this stuff? Line and bobber?

Donger 03-15-2012 11:51 AM

Huh. I just looked at the rules again and it states this: "Artificial fly and lure ONLY"

Does that mean I can't use the Powerbait?

This is about as easy as it gets:
http://www.berkley-fishing.com/produ.../trout-nuggets

I should say that powerbait is best on stockers. So if it's a stocked lake or slow moving stream. They were raised on similar food, so they take it readily. Wild trout are not going to take it as readily. For wild trout in swift moving streams, you're going to want to use a casting bubble with flies or fish with spinners. You can also try live worms.

One thing: check hook regulations on the catch and release lake. Many of them won't let you use treble hooks or will make you bend down the barbs on the hooks.

Donger, if it is a catch and release lake, there is NO WAY they are wanting you to use powerbait. Fish will swallow that and trout are fairly wimpy and will die. By artificial lures and flies, it usually means flies and then any other lure that isn't soft rubber or synthetic "dough" baits. Try casting a spoon called a little cleo. Blue and silver is a never miss color. Cast it out, reel it in. Very simple.

If it is catch and release, do NOT use powerbait. The fish will swallow it quickly and you'll just end up gut hooking them.

No bobber, the powerbait floats. Size 10 baitholder hook, then 8-12 inches up put some split shot (weight).

Sofa King 03-15-2012 12:04 PM

tooge is right about fish mortality with powerbait (and with live bait as well). It's strange that they allow worms and powerbait on their catch and release lake... but if they allow it... just know that you're going to kill some fish.

I think I've confused you.

These are the rules for the catch and take lake: "Dry flies, lures, worms, power bait, fish eggs are to be used ONLY. No live
minnows or fish are to be used as bait."

And the catch and release lake: "Artificial fly and lure ONLY"

From what I know (admittedly not much, because I only fly fish for trout), different states define "artificial lure" in different ways. Not sure whether Powerbait would be allowable or not.

Yeah, I suppose that I'll have to ask when I go and pay for my badge.

Is fishing for trout easier/better in a boat than on-shore? They allow canoes and "belly boats" (which is apparently like a inner tube with a large condom attached to it), but no motors of any kind.

It allows you access to more water, which is certainly an advantage. There's nothing more frustrating than seeing the fish all rising and taking just out of reach of your cast. I also think it's more fun, personally. But some people like to sit on the bank in a lawn chair and drink beer.

loochy 03-15-2012 12:26 PM

Power Bait is always considered with bait.

In general, referring to trout at least, when they say flies or lures only they mean flies or hard bodied lures only (NO soft plastics).

It can be easier...you can get to spots you can't reach without the boat and you can cast and retrieve at angles that put you in the best situation with any cover or currents. However, there is the risk of you falling in, and if you are bumbling idiot in a steel jonboat you'll spook the fish.

It does seem logical. We can only fish from the bank along our property line or along the dam, so having a boat would greatly increase the area from which we could fish.

I'd go with a jon boat over a canoe. Canoes are hard to fish from because of lack of stability. You can stand and move around in a jon boat.

They aren't allowed. Canoe or "belly boat" only.

Thanks. No laughing, but where does the line tie on? Onto the hook eye or the little hole on the other end of the spoon?

Hmmm. Ill try to describe the best way to use this. They spin, so that can twist the line when you retrieve them, so you dont ever want to connect right to the lure when using a spoon. I like to tie what is called a barrel swivel to my line. It has a loop on either end. Tie about a 1 foot piece of line to the other end. Then on the free end of the 1 foot piece of line, tie directly to the spoon. It will spin freely but wont twist your line. You can tie a snap swivel directly to the line and then clip it to the spoon. Lots of people do this, but I think finicky trout get bothered by the snap swivel. Just me tho.
