Is my ketchup use on french fries out of control?

I'm having lunch now, and I've got an order of steak fries. They're pretty good, and there's probably 20 or so fries in the batch.

Now, this restaurant serves ketchup in those little packets. You know, like McDonalds. They gave me three little packets for my 20+ steak fries. So I asked for more, and they brought me four more.

Now, I would estimate that I probably use 0.6 to 0.8 packets of ketchup on a normal steak fry. I just run a line of ketchup along the length of the fry, and it sums up to that usage. That would mean that I need 12 to 16 packets of ketchup for this particular meal. I'm embarrassed to ask for more, but these fries are really gonna start making me thirsty if I don't have ketchup.

It doesn't seem to me that my use is excessive, but I'll also note that I never, ever get enough ketchup at a restaurant if I order fries and can't grab the ketchup myself. Am I an outlier here, or do others have this problem too?

A poll will be coming, but very slowly and then it'll glop into the thread all at once.

For poll purposes I will make the poll universal and use a small order of McDonald's fries as the measure.

Molitoth 03-01-2013 02:25 PM

Some places are switching to those ketchup dips instead of packets, which rules because I love me some ketchup.

frankotank 03-01-2013 02:25 PM

these fries......they're MAKING ME THIRSTY!

And so the daddy tomato turns around and stomps on the baby tomato. SPLAT !!

And then he says ketchup.

Those packets are ludicrous. I'm willing to bet that the packaging costs far more than the ketchup.

Not the fries!

Planetman 03-01-2013 02:30 PM

It seems to me that (a) the frie is just a vehicle to get the ketchup to your mouth and (b) if you ate at a more upscale restaurant who had actual bottles of ketchup, this thread would not exist.

Frazod 03-01-2013 02:31 PM

I prefer mayo.

listopencil 03-01-2013 02:33 PM

I don't go to McD's but when I eat fries I put malt vinegar and ketchup on them. Perhaps that would help you use less ketchup.

I personally hate ketchup and use BBQ sauce on my fries instead.

Well yeah everybody likes mayo. I like Ranch dressing also... Both kill you in the calories department.

I go mustard. or some sorts of mustard/ketchup mix.

I wish Gravy would come in packets like Ketchup does.
I lika gravy.

TrebMaxx 03-01-2013 02:42 PM

I switch up, one fry with ketchup, then a couple without, then back to the ketchup. Also when I lived in Spokane WA there was a fast food place, I can't remember the name now, but anyway they provided tartar sauce with their fries and that was quite tasty.

The Texas Toms by 87th and Blue Ridge mysteriously ended up with ketchup all over one of its outside walls in a similar fashion when I was a kid.

Yes, this. Really good fries shouldn't be ruined with ketchup. And if they are making you thirsty...that's what beer is for.

Frosty 03-01-2013 03:14 PM

The more ketchup, the better!

prhom 03-01-2013 03:15 PM

I prefer mustard or ranch if I use anything. Usually, I just eat them plain. If a fry isn't good enough to be eaten without condiments, it's not a very good fry.

Tarter sauce with fries is really good too.

When I was a kid, I worked at a fast food chain in Oregon called Bob's Burgers. They made their own burger/fry sauce that excellent. It was kind of a cross between 1000 Island dressing and tarter sauce.

The funny thing is that restaurants are long gone but you can still buy the sauce.

Oh, I thought you meant all three tasted like vinegar.

I like ketchup in a glass bottle better than plastic for some reason.

Predarat 03-01-2013 03:59 PM

Its all about taste, I don't use any, but I cannot say its excessive. Everyone has their own taste.

seclark 03-01-2013 03:59 PM

Clark: Real tomato ketchup, Eddie?
Cousin Eddie: Oh, nothing but the best.

Munson 03-01-2013 03:59 PM

I usually go with Heinz.

But if its ketchup in a packet, I like McDonald's.

Pablo 03-01-2013 04:00 PM

Honey mustard is my first choice, anything mayo based is second. Ketchup is a distant third. Shitty condiment.

gblowfish 03-01-2013 04:02 PM

When I was a kid, Hi Boy in Independence had ketchup packs that were little plastic dip trays, like when you get ranch or dipping sauce at KFC now. The packs were square and had an aluminum peel off face. The ketchup was made by Kraft Foods, and it was really good. Excellent with onion rings. I guess the packs were too expensive, because eventually Hi Boy switched over to normal ketchup packs like everybody else.

Rain Man 03-01-2013 04:11 PM

Based on the poll results so far, it seems like ketchup packets should be four times their current size. That would meet the two common needs of four packets and eight packets and save a lot of packaging.

My fast food of choice is Burger King. They usually have the pumping station for ketchup. I usually go through about 6 of those little cups between the burgers and fries.

As for favorite ketchup, Heinz' "Simply Heinz". The Hunts "natural" version is too sweet.

The pumping stations are where it's at. You don't have the shame of asking for more and more ketchup packets.

BlackHelicopters 03-01-2013 04:31 PM

Fries, ketchup, and Vodka. Does not get any better.

CHENZ A! 03-01-2013 04:38 PM

If you're an adult then you can choose ketchup as your beverage if you ****ing feel like it. I prefer hot sauce. On my fries, not as beverage.

Chief Roundup 03-01-2013 04:38 PM

If they make you thirsty take a drink instead of covering up the potato with catsup.

There is no shame in asking for more, they are paid to be your bitch.

Actually, being browbeaten into limiting your catsup intake is just what the corporate pigs upstairs want - when I worked at McDonald's in high school we were told to only give 3 packets at a time. I take (a limited amount of) pride in asking over and over again for more catsup until they get tired of the little game and give me a handful.

I really love to use the "Zesty Sauce" that BK gives you for onion rings on my fries. The only problem with that is I hate to order fries at Burger King because their fries really suck.

If not that, lots of ketchup (anything but Heinz because of the ****s that own the company).

Honestly, I'm a ketchup fiend, and this seems excessive. 16 packets is equal to approximately 16 tablespoons = 1 CUP of ketchup.

Used to be Heiz all the way. But now it's Hunt's. Heinz is all aboit sweet. Hunt's has a less sweet, more complex flavor (for ketchup).

Hmm. I never thought about it that way. I always assumed that the packets were so small that they had no actual volume. Perhaps I need to start watching it.

Not to pile on, but that's almost 1,100 mg of sodium and 21 grams of sugar in ketchup alone...

seclark 03-01-2013 06:58 PM

if i'm gonna put something on my fries at a fast food joint, i'll go to wendys and get a package of their chili sauce. don't try it at the drive thru, cause they always welch on it. go in and order it to go. order of fries, w/a packet of chili sauce. no burger, no drink. pisses em off, but ****em.

No way dude. Go for it!

16 packets of ketchup is only equal to about .6 cups of ketchup. You could eat another 10 packets and still feel confident that you haven't eaten a cup of ketchup.

She should definitely feel bad about eating a lot of ketchup. That's because she's morbidly obese though. I've never met Rainman before, but he's talked about liking to run and stuff.. So I'm guessing that he's somewhat into health/fitness, and doesn't eat a grip of ketchup everyday.
