-- I realize I'm late to the show - 90's alternative help.......?

Hey guys - I'm looking for some bands similar to STP or Dinosaur Jr. I like the tracks that were popular enough to remember - however not the ones that were beaten to death by mainstream. It's a fine line.

Here's an example of what I'm looking for in this genre...

http://tinyurl.com/mnkvzy

If you all can help, that'd be great - I was listening mostly to hip-hop and electronica, even back then. So I missed a decade - aside from the Counting Crows and maybe Smashing Pumpkins - so eliminate those, please.

Sisters of Mercy...???

The video I posted is precisely the style, and level of popularity (at that time) that I am looking for

Any help?

You don't get a lot of underground music when living in OK and Ks.

I will add "The Nixons". They had one good song called "Sister".

LMAO

I'm laughing because they were signed to the music publishing company I worked for and given an astonishing advance. Then, they flopped.

90's that has held up and I still listen to:

Radiohead (ok computer is my favorite from the 90s)
Sonic Youth (their best album was arguably late 80's)
The Cure (best album was in 89)
Pixies (also best stuff very late 80s)
Modest Mouse
The Flaming Lips (sneak in with Soft Bulletin from 99)
My Bloody Valentine

I could see SR enjoying MBV. I wouldn't have known of them if they hadn't released a somewhat recent album. Also the muted vocals and overall sound of the band seem to work much better if you are listening on good headphones or system.

You have some excellent choices in there - however Fugazi (I love them by the way 'waiting room' were were there! 1994!) and Front242 and Bob Mould belong elsewhere.

At that time - I always saw Cracker as elite - pardon the term.

They seemed tighter (as a band) than most. I thought (though they got some radio play) they were underrated.

Creed and Nickleback are products of the record companies, manufactured/packaged/sure things for radio... like boy bands, except boy bands are honest and up front about it. Candlebox is in there because they were absolutely horrid live, couldn't replicate the sound from the studio.

I agree. I saw Candlebox when they toured for their second album and they were absolutely god awful. My favorite song from them is "Change" and the douche singer spent half the song yelling at a security guard.
